Overall we had a lovely stay. But We sincerely feel parts of the house need updating and could be cleaner. I have allergies so the musty smell and possible mold made my eyes itchy and caused some wheezing, not serious. Just old house issues that we thought should be addressed.
Also…We went to use the hideaway bed in the living room but it was filthy and had mouse poop under it. We closed it up and chose to not to use it.
We did not have bathroom towels until the second day. But The cleaning people were kind and told us they got held up with laundry machine issue.
Everything else was fine, Clean bathroom and clean kitchen and enough supplies for our basic needs. One possible add on would be to provide some sort of hot pot or tea kettle for tea drinkers.
We love the porch and the view of the horses and the lake.
My family of 5 really enjoyed our stay. The place was clean and functional. The kitchen had plenty of pots and pans to cook meals. Finally, we enjoyed the short walk to the beach! Thank you for such an amzing place!
We had a wonderful stay at Sowls Cabin. It was a true up north cabin experience! The cabin was well appointed and had everything we needed for our stay. We loved having dinner on the screened in porch and the deck was perfect for taking in the northern lights and meteor shower. We loved the proximity to Big Bay Town Park and the firepit was fun for the kids to roast marshmellows. Thank you!
I was just looking to take a vacation in a new place and find a spot that was nice and quiet and relaxing. I definitely found that as it was outside of the city on the island and in a very nice and quiet spot. Nice and clean property with exactly what I needed!!
We stayed for a week and everything was wonderful! The cabin was neat and cozy, and Judi was wonderful to communicate with! Having a great place to stay made our vacation that much better. We will definitely be back!
this cabin is perfectly located with a beautiful view I lovely sounds of nature. Screened in porch was a great place to hang out with family and say boy games or eat dinner. The hosts were very quick to respond to many questions we had. They are a very friendly couple. Loved how close it was to Big Bay Town Park and their amazing beach.
We had a peaceful stay at Sowls Cabin! It was just perfect for us! The cabin was clean and had everything we needed to make our stay memorable! The owners were kind and responsive to anything we needed or any questions we had! Perfect!
We had a nice time :) the weather didn't cooperate as much as we would of liked, but had a good time. There was not quite as much to do on the island as we thought .We are so very greatfull to we had a snafo in our puppy sitter and eneded up having to bring our mama dog and her 9 puppies ! If we wouldn't if been able to do that one of us would of missed out on our vacation. From the bottom of our hearts ! Thank you so much!!!
Our family was looking for a last minute cabin on the shores of lake superior when we discovered the listing for this cabin. It turned out to be the perfect place for us. It is nicely situated in a quiet area of the island, but has views of the lake and within a few minutes of walking, you're at the shoreline. The cabin was clean and stocked with all the at-home necessities needed to get by on an island (cookware, dishes, etc.). Check in was very easy and with any questions about the cabin, I received responses within minutes. Judi was a very a great (remote) host. I would absolutely recommend this cabin and this island to anyone.
The owners of the property were extremely helpful and kind with any questions we had. Lovely stay, we had everything we needed, a peaceful setting and I would return in a heartbeat!
We had a lovely time at the Sowl’s cabin. Everything was neat and tidy and the linens smelled so fresh and clean. The beds were comfy and the Wi-Fi was great for our kids during the downtime. Outdoor shower was fun and Judi was available via text with any questions or concerns we had. We would come back in the future!
The property was very comfortable and well suited for our needs. We loved the peace and quiet of the area. Kitchen had everything we needed and we cooked several meals there. Judi was very responsive throughout the process. Madeline Island is wonderful and I recommend this cabin.
Perfect place to stay for us. Exactly what I was looking for. I love Madeline Island and this cabin completed our stay. Clean, great location, beautiful view. Definitely would stay again and suggest to friends.
We stayed for almost a week at Sowl’s cabin and really enjoyed ourselves. The cabin was clean, well equipped and spacious. Plenty of room for the four of us.
The beds and bedding were clean and comfortable, every kind of kitchen utensil was available plus a Webber grill and a wonderful fire pit with fire wood. There’s a great view of the lake from the living room, deck and screened in porch which we used as our dining area.
The cabin is conveniently located to both Town Park and Big Bay State Park. It is a ways from town so we planned our grocery runs carefully. Judi was great to deal with and quick to respond. We would stay at Sowl’s cabin again!

I never give bad reviews, but the owners should be a ware of these things.
- Dishes did not seem clean, they were cloudy like they hadn't been washed properly.
- The toilet tilted back and forth.
- We could not use the Wifi at all... wrong password?
- Mattresses were very old (perhaps from the 50s) Yikes!
- bedding(sheets and blankets) also was old and mostly polyester.
It may be fine for guys but women notice things like this. We all agreed we would not recommend this cabin to friends.
Sorry to be honest - but hope it helps.

The property is more like a cottage not a cabin to us. A cozy cottage!
We had an incredible experience! It was a cozy place, not fancy, but we had everything we needed. We were able to relax, enjoy and make awesome memories with our kids! I am sure we will forever treasure the experience of being on this beautiful Island! I am very thankful for Judy being so accessible with questions and needs!

Just what we were looking for!
The home is cozy and comfortable, just what we wanted. We practically LIVED in the screen porch! It was such a great place to eat our meals and play games in the evenings. There is no air conditioning in the house but once the windows are open, the cross breezes kept the temperature very comfortable for us. We liked being away from the hustle and bustle of a touristy place like Madeline Island but still felt close to the parks and activities we wanted to do. Our little dogs loved having a nice yard to run around in and we didn't worry about heavy road traffic. The property is very well-maintained and clean. We had everything we needed for our stay. We would definitely come back!

About the host
Hosted by Jon and Judi Sowl
We met on Madeline Island the summer of 1980. Judi grew up here and met Jon when he spent the summer here working. We were married on the island 4 years later and have spent many summers and vacation time here. Our three grown children have many wonderful memories of times spent at the cabin. We both have family on the island and in Bayfield. We now live in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and visit the island as often as we can.
