This beautiful loft was perfect and so close to all the restaurants and coffee shops. If you have a large truck or suv, be prepared to park on the street. Bring a laptop if you want to watch your shows or just enjoy the scenery. The views are amazing and the book collection is great. We had a short 30 minute drive to Purgatory ski resort. So much to do in Durango and surrounding areas. Enjoy!
This place is a gem! Our second stay here, love the vibe and the perfect location. Lovely walk to wonderful restaurants & shopping, plus with a dedicated parking spot it’s super simple to head out and explore farther afield. Can’t wait for out next stay, thanks George!
Great location, great courtyard to chill morning and night. Would highly recommend staying here and will be sure to book next time we come through Durango
The coziest, homiest little place! Perfect size and amazing location. George is a great host! We will definitely stay here again if we’re ever back in the area!
This property was a home away from home - so cozy and ideally located with beautiful views and a great feel. I loved how quiet the space was, free of distracting electronics. Can’t wait to stay again!
What a great stay! Super cute place, really well stocked with everything I needed and more. Location couldn’t be better - right in town and close to the beautiful river walk. Super easy communication and access. Highly recommend!!
What a gem! This apartment has everything you need for a stay in Durango. Great location, lovely outdoor space, and a comfortable and stylish interior. Perfect for my solo stay but would be great for two folks too. George was communicative and does a fantastic job with his property. Highly recommend!

This was a fabulous place to stay for three nights. Very well designed studio with porch area for hanging out.
I’m not joking when I say this was my favorite rental I’ve ever stayed in! It was the perfect location and so so cute. It was so easy to walk around town, I’d love to come back again.
Location parking incredible! George was great although we never really needed him as we had no problems. We explored the area every day then in the evenings we were able to walk to restaurants and bars which is priceless. Very cute, well maintained, and VERY clean.
This is a great location for visiting the area. Walk to breakfast and dinner downtown, everything is close.
We visit the area annually and will definitely stay again.
We had a lovely stay at this cozy, art-filled studio. It was a convenient spot for downtown restaurants, galleries and the Durango to Silverton railway. And it gave us a quiet space to decompress after sightseeing.
Amazing property! Great location downtown. We loved hearing the train and seeing it from a few locations. The kitchen was more than adequately supplied for those that like to cook. Great art work and books. BYO TV. Can’t wait to go back!

About the host
Hosted by George Schmidt
I moved to Durango right out of high school in 1991. I waited tables at a restaurant for three months before deciding I needed to do more. I went to college, and then lived and worked in NYC for twenty years before finally making it back to Durango in 2010. I'm an Artist, and a builder, and the Stonehouse gave me the opportunity to bring these two skills together. A gut renovation that I began in 2010 left the historic vibe of the building intact, while allowing me to totally update all the mechanical systems. I love mountain biking on the trails around town, hiking, backpacking, rafting, and exploring the deserts and mountains with my partner Amber Johnson, a Durango Native (that rare breed!) that i'm lucky enough to share my adventures with.
Why they chose this property
The Stonehouse Studio is a unique downtown property that is super close to Main Street, but provides a remarkable feeling of seclusion, even in the heart of busy downtown Durango. A Durango landmark, it was built in the 1890's making it one of the oldest buildings in town. After completion of a major renovation in 2010-12, I completely updated all the systems of the building while retaining the charming vibe of the nineteenth century stone building. There is a large private backyard, which is tucked away behind a fence and deck, but that offers views of the large trees in Buckley Park, right across the street. From the Stonehouse Studio you can walk anywhere you might want to go in downtown Durango. All the best restaurants and shops, galleries, bars and grocery stores are just minutes away on foot. All of the Mountain Biking Trailheads are easily accessed from downtown, and are there are literally hundreds of miles of trails you can access directly from the driveway in just a few minutes ride.
