Little Red House Cute, Cozy, Rustic Home in Historic Shasta
Whiskeytown Lake
Our lakes are full! Perfect location for daily swimming and adventuring at Whiskeytown Lake! Only 3 miles to the lake. Please click on photos until you get full-size photos of the house and property for best view. The home is located in the historic town of Shasta. Some refer to Shasta as Old Shasta. Our town has a Courthouse/Museum, Mercantile and Shorty's cafe along with the row of brick ruins that line the highway. The Western Star Lodge #2 is the oldest chartered lodge in California. The town has 3 historic cemeteries, Masonic, Catholic and the Union (Pioneer) Cemetery. The State park is located within walking distance. Whiskeytown lake (3 miles) most trails are now open and the lake is having some great fishing days. Some of our guest that are avid gold miners have found nuggets in unusual areas. Areas that were inaccessible before the fire. Donât forget to pickup your $1 gold panning permit at Whiskeytown National Park.
The Little Red House It is always our goal to provide guests with the rustic beauty and charm, while providing all the modern conveniences of home. Work from home! Adventure! We have taken pride in our home, as it is the home in which we raised our two girls. Cleanliness is always our first priority along with comfort. An Ionizer (purifying) is used for 6-8 hours. All bedding is washed in hot water. Both bedrooms have luxurious beds, bedding and pillows for a perfect nightâs sleep. The backyard gives you the solitude of a parklike setting. Our redwood outdoor shower is a real treat!
My husband and I enjoy hiking and biking locally with day hikes to surrounding areas. Other areas to hike besides Whiskeytown are Castle Crags, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen or even a day trip to the coast.
We also have a pear tree that bears fruit towards the end of October through the first 3 weeks of November. This pear tree was planted at our home in 1957. In 2015 the mother pear tree produced 2018 pounds. I have also grafted an additional 30 trees as of which 14 are planted at the Little Red House. Join us for fall and enjoy our pears.
We have a few inquiries regarding pets. We love animals however, our Fir floors are soft wood and took me a month to refinish from pet nail damage. Plus, since we advertise a pet free home to those with allergies. The backyard is also not dog proof.
Available for short term rentals, 3 days or 3 months.
If you have any questions about what to do in and around old Shasta feel free to ask me questions and I will assist you with organizing your adventures.

Close to outdoor fun
Great home...very close to all the outdoor fun in Shasta area, especially Whiskeytown. Best deal if you don't want to stay in tents but much better than a hotel. Owner is very helpful and hospitable.
We loved staying at the little red house. It was clean and welcoming. Kaylynn was amazing, kind and welcoming. Communication was easy and effective. Love the location for going to the lake and into Redding. Highly recommend staying here!!

It was a joy to have you and your family stay. We are happy that the Little Red House was comfy for you.
Have a wonderful summer!

A beautiful property within a very short walking distance to historic sites, ruins, and a gold rush era cemetery. Very cool to see. Located only a brief drive from the lake, the house is charming, well stocked, and has comfortable beds. The outdoor shower is fantastic! The deck is a beautiful location to enjoy your morning coffee and both check in and out were easy. I was impressed that the freezer had an automatic icemaker. We visited during a heat wave and the AC kept us nice and cool. Hosts are friendly, communicative, and local. I highly recommend the Little Red House and Iâm sure we will visit again!
Our host is amazing and the house is immaculate! Clean towels, ample games/toys for the family. She even showed us her pet tortoise before we left which my kids loved. Highly recommended!

Your family was a joy to have stay at The Little Red House. So glad you were able to visit our area. We look forward to seeing you again!
The cabin was perfect for our girls weekend and the host was awesome. Beware the description is not always accurate even though VRBO has been notified. There is no hot tub or pool, and no lakes within walking distance (but there is a cemetery next door and historical buildings down the block). Whiskeytown Lake is a short drive from the cabin and has lots of places to relax on the beach or play in the water. There are also lots of waterfalls nearby you can hike to. Check out the visitor center for a map, parking permit and park rules. Thereâs so much to do we are definitely coming back!!

Charming abode - would rent again
We stayed here for 3 nights in late June 2016 with our daughter and 1 year old grandson - it was perfect! The home is exceptionally clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully supplied. Owners Kaylynn and Scott (TRULY nice people!) have put a lot of heart and creativity into its new life as a vacation rental. Location is great, the town being full of historical structures and a park. Easy to get to Whiskeytown Lake and Redding. We loved it and will definitely go back if the opportunity presents itself.

We are glad you found our little pieces of treasure, Shasta, Whiskeytown Lake and The Little Red House.
We look forward to another one of your visits in the future. Each season has it's own beauty and the house is super cozy in the winter. I will be praying for snow! âď¸
Great location for walks in historic district or access to lake trails & beach a few miles away. The entire view from the back yard is a small mountain and nature, very relaxing. Big back yard with a nice horse shoe pit and BBQ. Accommodating and friendly management. Hope I can make it back sometime to stay again.

This place was absolutely lovely. Plenty of outdoor space with a covered deck, BBQ, and close to whiskeytown lake for more outdoor pleasures. In the morning you can hear the birds and it was such a great way to start your day. The outdoor shower was definately a highlight. Located in old shasta with plenty of historic buildings and monuments. I will be returning to this bit of heaven for another stay.

There were 3 adults and 3 children in our group. Kaylynn was wonderful and had outdoor toys for the kids and spent time getting to know them and us to make our trip enjoyable. Her husband showed the kids their tortoise and they were ecstatic about getting to feed the tortoise. The outdoor shower was amazing! Thank you for a wonderful visit. Hope to be back soon.

Great little house in a quiet neighborhood.
The house is great for 4 or so people. We used it while fishing Whiskeytown lake for a few days and will again. Enough boat parking for two boats. Kaylyinn is very accommodating. She has put a lot of work into the house. She is just finishing a great outdoor shower. The backyard is at least a half acre with a nice patio and horseshoe pits.

Charming home was decorated with some local treasures. It was perfectly decorated with some local treasures. We enjoyed learning about the area and spending time paddleboarding at Whiskeytown Lake.
If you are looking for a clean home, with a nice deck area to sit outside, a big back yard for kids to play in, and close to the lake, look no more! One of the best hidden features was the outdoor shower! :). (I had forgotten about this and was happy to see it during the check-in)
Kaylynn and Scott were so helpful and very accommodating we truly couldnât have been happier with our stay.
We look forward to visiting again.

We are glad you enjoyed the solitude of the Little Red House. Hope to see you when the pears are ripe in November đ
Super cute house with lots of antiques and personal touches.
Enjoyed our stay and loved being so close to the lake, we were able to get our kayaks out on the lake without a lot of travel time to and from.
My husband and I are average height and retired. We found it difficult to get into and out of the claw foot tub for our showers (safety). We also found it challenging to get into and out of the beds as they were on frames that were higher than normal.

The best EVER!
We cannot say enough wonderful things about Kaylynn and her "Little Red House". From the moment you book, she calls you to make sure she can do whatever she can to accommodate your stay. She even set up an amazing air mattress for my daughter who decided she didn't want to share the second bed. The home is well organized, incredibly clean, and well-stocked with everything a family would need to make them feel at home. Our family honestly felt so at-home here. The yard was amazing as well! We can't wait to book our next stay here! Thank you Kaylynn for everything!

Five stars all around!
This by far was the best VRBO house that we stayed in. Everything was perfect and the house is filled with quality stuff which is nothing short of a 5-star holiday resort.
Kaylynn, the owner, love the house and it shows in the care and effort she has put in to make this a great place to stay. The backyard is a perfect place to start and end your day. The mornings and evenings we spent in the backyard will be cherished for a long time.
We loved the place so much that we asked to extend our stay but couldn't.
Tip for future visitors- you need minimum 4 nights to enjoy all the beauty and activity this place has to offer.
Thanks Kaylynn for sharing the "little red house" with us. We will be back for sure.

Loved your artwork on the chalkboard thanks for the smiles!
Warmly, Kaylynn
Such a lovely little place. We have been boating/camping at Whiskeytown for over 40 years. I almost donât want others to know about it for fear we wonât be able to get it when we want!:-)
Only 5 minutes to Oak Bottom where we launched our boat.
House has a well stocked kitchen, is super clean, comfortable beds. Our grandkids enjoyed the bubbles and the giant chalk board. Loved the outdoor shower and wonderful yard. I enjoyed my coffee every morning on the porch.
Katlynn thinks of everything. We enjoyed her artistic flair, and the history of the house and community. I got a little emotional hearing the story of the Carr fire from 5 years ago.
Thank you, We will be back hopefully.

So glad you and your family enjoyed your stay at our Little Red House.
Whiskeytown is such a beautiful lake, we feel blessed.
The Little Red House was charming and the perfect size for my three kids and me. It is not just beautifully, but also lovingly, decorated and had everything we needed (kitchen supplies, bedding, linens, bath products, laundry) to make it a home for a few days. I had no idea how great the location was - only 4 minutes to the Whiskeytown visitors' center. Highly recommend Whiskeytown as an alternative to the more popular and crowded Lake Shasta. Kaylynn, the owner, was a really great host. She seemed to have a vested interest in making sure we not only were comfortable but also enjoyed our time in the area. She was always available to answer my questions about local attractions, and she also generously supplied us with incredible peaches and tomatoes from her garden! One last thing - the spacious backyard is fabulous, especially for kids. And the outdoor shower was spectacular! Highly recommend this place.

Super Cute, Close to Town, Great Host
The house was adorable and the yard was huge and really nice. There was a great place to sit in the back yard and chat at night. It was really close to great waterfall hikes, Whiskeytown Lake, and other fishing areas. There were also tons of indoor and outdoor games to play (along with a few toys and books for kids).
If you are bringing a toddler, I do have a suggestion. Bring one or 2 of those cheapo pressure gates to block off certain parts of the house. Our son was obsessed with the cute stove that had fairly low knobs on it. He could very easily turn it on and off. If we just had one or 2 of those gates, we could've very easily blocked off the kitchen.
We had a great visit!.

About the host
Hosted by Kaylynn Garland
Scott and I met while attending College. We moved away for 4 years and then returned to raise our family in Shasta. Scott was from the city and I was local to the area. Scott was an avid rock climber and backpacker. I was into backpacking, running and loved my pottery. Through the years our lives had some twist and turns but always staying true to our appreciation of nature and the fun of adventure. We continue to make the home and the yard something special. Our home is a labor of love you might say. We offer this home for traveling nurses, executive stays and also for family get aways! Our guests can enjoy the beauty of the area and relax in our cute and cozy home. On the night of July 25, 2018 we watched from across Whiskeytown Lake as the Carr Fire was kicking up and within the hour we made the decision to get home and pack up as the fire was moving fast. We are beyond grateful to many agencies and especially to those firefighters that defended our homes and our street. Life has returned to a new kind of normal. Scott and I will be still make time for hiking , gold panning, biking, kayaking, running and traveling to visit our girls and family.
Why they chose this property
Our home was built in the 1930's. No matter where we traveled or lived we wanted to make Northern California our home. Shasta and the Whiskeytown area was an area we both fell in love with. We were lucky to be offered this home in 1985. We raised our children in this home, then the day came to move to a larger home, while never wanting to sell the home we decided to rent the home for the next 23 years. The last few year we have put our heart and soul into "The Little Red House" remodeling and keeping the rustic charm of the home. In August 2015 we had a "friends and family" open house and we were over whelmed by the response to our home from everyone who attended. Bottom line... everyone asked, why we were not downsizing and moving back into "The Little Red House"? Actually the thought has crossed our minds most everyday. However, we will be staying in our current home at this time. We are excited and look forward to having guests stay in the home.
What makes this property unique
Easy access to Redding or even a day trip to the coast, Mt. Shasta, Shasta Caverns and Mt. Lassen. The best part of where The Little Red House is located. It is a short 3 mile drive to Whiskeytown Lake. The home is located on a quiet street. Enjoy being out of the city where you can see the stars at night. Enjoy the wildlife, deer, squirrel, quail, doves, coyotes and foxes. At night you might be lucky enough to see a raccoon or even a ring-tailed cat.
