About this property
Original Log Cabin At Entrance To Custer State Park Overlooking Stockade Lake
The original cabin was built circa 1930, and remains true to this day to it's beginnings; however some years later the kitchen, bath and bedroom were added to offer more space and the modern conveniences. The log walls in the living room are chinked with real buffalo hide and all the décor pays homage to the history and settling of the area. We have displayed a collection of Indian related items and artwork, as well as memorabilia of the old west, homesteading, hunting and trapping...all of which were a part of Black Hills history. The cabin sits on several acres, sharing a border with Forest Service, and only about 1500 ft. from the entrance to Custer State Park, one of the largest state parks in the USA. The large living room's focal point is a beautiful, native rock arched fireplace with a gas log to take the chill off on cool evenings as well as contribute to the cozy ambiance. There is a full-size sofa bed. With the queen bed and double bed in the bedroom, there is room for up to six people to stay. There is a large, flat screen TV also in the living room, and access to internet. We do have a washer and dryer available for longer-stay guests. The charming country kitchen has a wonderful, huge window above the sink, affording a lovely view. And, the kitchen is equipped with full-size appliances, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, dishes, pots and pans. We also stock basic staples such as coffee, sugar, salt and pepper, and also condiments like ketchup and mustard. We are actually licensed as a B&B, but instead of preparing a meal for you at a set time and place, we simply provide you with some fresh foods in the fridge, fresh fruits, cereals and most often something freshly baked. The well water here is so good you will not want bottled water, and has been tested periodically for safety. We have bicycles for your use, with a hiking, bicycle paved trail adjacent which goes to Custer. In Custer, this paved trail joins the Mickelson Trail, which is a rails-to-trails pathway which transverses the entire Black Hills south to north, with many trail heads to access sections. If you like wildlife watching, just sit outside (or simply look out any window in the cabin) in the morning or maybe at sunset and don't be surprised if you see deer or turkey watching you. We will keep a supply of feed available to give them a treat, but be warned that if you do, they will be back! As owners, we take pride in keeping the cabin up to your expectations. We do our own cleaning, and do not charge a cleaning fee. We are the new owners and our goal will be to do all we can to ensure your visit here is pleasant.
NEWS BULLETIN: We have just finished building another cabin on the Stockade Lake Cabin property. This will enable a larger family or group of friends to book both cabins and have more space and bathrooms! Or, for just two or three guests who don't need the space of the big cabin and want to save money, as "Hunter's Cabin" will be available at a much lower rate. The vrbo listing number for Hunter's Cabin is 1349230, so please check it out. The new cabin is a rustic type, one room concept with full bath and kitchen, and covered porch. I have included some pics of Hunter’s cabin on this site, so you can see what is available if you are needing two cabins on same location

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cabin and surrounding property was beautiful and the perfect size for the two of us. Roberta was a great host and was there for us when we had questions. I highly recommend this property.
We absolutely enjoyed our stay at the cabin! Roberta was an amazing hostess, greeting us at check in, and answering any questions we had. The cabin is cozy and felt like home. Breakfast on the front porch is a must!
Our stay at this cabin was great. We loved being so close to Custer State Park. Roberta was a sweetheart. She put out snacks for us for when we arrived, which was much appreciated.
Roberta’s cabin was a great place to stay for our short stay in South Dakota. It was in a great location just outside Custer State Park. The cabin was bigger than it looked in the pictures. It was a lovely place to stay.
The cabin was just as described, it was very clean had everything we needed for cooking supplies, we were welcomed with some fresh fruit on table. It has lots of dvds to choose from if you wish, nice big gas fireplace, beds were comfortable they had fans in closet if needed which we did use, their was food in cabinets and condiments in fridge. The decorations in the house were very interesting to look at all the old native items, they had games, coloring subtitles for kids, and interesting books to look at. I definitely recommend this quite cozy cabin to friends however do keep in mind that it's probably not for children under the age of maybe 9 as their is alot of nice decorations that it's hard for little ones to resist touching. I also enjoyed the front deck sitting out there in the morning watching moma bird feed her babies and the baby bunny that came to visit me it was so peaceful
This cabin embodies the spirit of the Black Hills. It is ideally situated for access to all of the best of Custer State Park. We had a wonderful time!

An absolutely wonderful stay and lodging for us -- thoroughly enjoyed it. Roberta is a great host. The cabin is wonderful, the setting beautiful, and everything very easy. We will be back.
Convenient location to the sights. Private location and interesting historical decor adds to the experience of the Black Hills. Lots of amenities that make you feel like it's your home too.
Beautiful property, quiet location (at least before Memorial Day!). Walking distance to Stockade Lake and a beautiful walk in the forest surrounding it. Roberta's place is clean and stocked with thoughtful treats for us boarders. Recommended stay.
This cabin is truly a home away from home. Roberta was beyond welcoming and so very kind. This cozy cabin is in the perfect location and allowed us to experience and see so many different things that South Dakota has to offer.
We felt instantly welcomed and at home. This is a fully furnished cabin with all the comforts of home. Charming decor, a little bit Native American and a little bit Country and whole lot cozy.
We really loved Roberta’s cabin. We wish we had a few more days to explore. Roberta was a fantastic host and greeted us with delicious muffins and food for the morning. That was very thoughtful. Was one of our favorite places to stay so far. Thanks Roberta!
We absolutely loved this Cabin! The owner Roberta was just a wonderful women and provided everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Fantastic location at the entrance to Custer State Park . 15-20 minutes to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We thoroughly enjoy our quick 4-day trip! Thank you Roberta!
This cabin is the perfect location for visiting Custer, SD and surrounding area. Roberta was a terrific hostess, complete with fresh fruit and blueberry muffins upon our arrival. Although we never needed anything, no doubt she would have been very accessible and responsive to any needs. An added bonus was seeing deer in the yard each morning and evening.
The pictures of the interior of the cabin don’t do it justice. Very charming, clean and comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised at how large the living room was. Large window with a great view of Stockade Lake and surrounding mountains. Frequently saw deer on the property. Would love to come again.
Everything was great, except for extremely spotty WiFi and no Dish network. We made due but expected those amenities to be there. The location is great and the cabin looks just as is advertised. I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Sorry about the spotty WiFi….our server company is in process of installing fiber optics here, so hopefully that will help solve that problem. And our Samsung smart tv has over 100 free channels and guests can use their Netflix, prime tv, etc accounts .

Cabin was cluttered with a lot of stuff! Cabin had a very musty smell! The walk up too the cabin was long and rocky! Price was high for only two adults!

I am really so sorry you were so unhappy! In 8 years my cabin has never received a review of less than a four or five! And most quests love the collection of primitives and one-of-a-kind pieces. The outside steps up to cabin are built of rock, but does not make it a rocky trail. You would be better served in the future by choosing to stay in a nice motel, and skip an original log cabin in the Black Hills. In fact, I now have guests coming back for their third, fourth, and Fifth time because they love it so much.
Was a great location during a very busy time due to the bike rally. Felt safe and was easy to find and come and go. Plenty of space yet cozy. Beautiful quiet mornings and evenings.
The one issue was it stated there was internet but it did not work, however probably just as well, kept me from doing too much work on vacation :)
Roberta was a great hostess, who walked us through everything about the cabin, was available if we needed her, but left us alone. The cabin was spacious, decorated with unique antiques and replicas, had a great front porch with a view of Stockade Lake. The location was right at Custer State Park entrance and about five minutes from the town of Custer. Most other attractions were close by, so it was the perfect location for visiting Mount Rushmore, hiking, biking, kayaking, seeing lots of wildlife, visiting caves, and shopping. We had never been to the Black Hills and thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay!

About the host
Hosted by Roberta Duncan
My name is Roberta Duncan, and I am in my sixth year of hosting this cabin for guests.
Why they chose this property
This property suits our needs perfectly. We will be living on the same property as the Stockade Lake cabin, so feel we can properly care for the cabin and guests, and also have or own personal "guest house" when our children and grandchildren come to visit. Now they can have their own spot while visiting us, and when they are gone, we want to share our property with guests from anywhere in the world. There is absolutely nothing like the smell of pines in the sun, or the soft whispering of pines on a breezy day. Having this cabin also gives us an opportunity to share some of the collections we have been able to acquire over the years, hopefully bringing the feeling of sharing history.
What makes this property unique
Probably first and foremost the draw of the Stockade Lake Cabin is the lake! There is absolutely nothing like having a view of living water with all the colors and changes the surface can show with the sun, wind, snow or whatever mother nature brings us. And, to be able to have this view from the cabin, either inside looking out or sitting on the front porch/patio, is the most unique quality of our property.
