This is the second time staying at this lovely cottage. We always enjoyed being here due to the proximity of my parents. We also love it due to the quiet nature and the accommodations. It’s the perfect rental.
My partner and I had a wonderful mini vacation in the Viroqua WI area. The Otts cottage was perfect for the two of us. The grounds are beautiful, the atmosphere is serene and peaceful, the hosts are friendly and a great source of information about the surrounding area. Five stars are not enough to show how happy and comfortable we were. I give our stay 10 stars!!
Absolutely beautiful space. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. The porch is very private with great sunrise views of the Driftless area. The grounds and gardens were stunning. It’s a sign of goodness when nature is thriving all around. Close to Viroqua but not too close:)Thank you Wayne and Sherry! We hope to be back again!
This cottage was just perfect for me and my spouse. There were so many nice touches like cushy bathmats and nightlights. Beautiful location with a beautiful view. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a place to stay in the driftless area.
We were looking for a place to stay while wandering along the upper Mississippi River. Location was perfect for this. Short ride from the river to this place at the end of a road in the middle of rolling hills farm country just added to our enjoyable wandering. Inside the cottage we found a neat clean and comfortable place to come back to each evening. Best shower I have ever found in a rental.
Perfect place to stay. Quiet and everything one needs. It’s a quick drive into Viroqua. Owners are kind and quick response. They add the small details to your stay. Thanks for a great holiday stay.
This is a lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Sherry and
Wayne thought of all the details, it was very comfortable. Such a beautiful setting, we could have just hung out on the porch for days. Would definitely rent again, highly recommended.
The cottage gave my spouse and I a luxurious, tasteful space to prepare for and rest from gorgeous bike rides through the areas hills and valleys. Host Wayne's professional massage at the end of a long ride was pure heaven. Morning sunrise over the open views and birdsong was unforgettable. Perfect stay.

Sherrie and Wayne's cottage is lovely. The place is clean, sunny, cozy--- well-equipped and just easy to be in. Every window looks out at a different lovely view of the Driftless area. Our hosts shared excellent information about terrific nearby hiking, great drives, wonderful restaurants. We will definitely be back!

Susan and Jeff, thank you for your kind review of your stay at The Garden Cottage. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and your travels around the area. You were both such lovely and gracious guests, we certainly hope you return and have time to do more exploring of the area. Wayne & Sherrie
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this peaceful property perched on a ridge in the Driftless Area! Wayne and Sherrie were very gracious and welcoming hosts, and the garden cottage was spotless, with everything needed to make my stay comfortable. Highlights include watching Red-headed Woodpeckers (and other birds) visit the suet feeder in front of the porch, then later seeing fireflies light up the night sky. A great getaway!

So glad we discovered this cottage getaway
We hope to stay here many more times in the future since we love the Viroqua area. Gorgeous views from this ridgetop, completely quiet (slept like the dead both nights), beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, and the cottage is cozy, bright, homey and very clean. It was provided with every amenity we'd want...even fresh organic half-and-half for the coffee, thanks for that. Felt very private, but loved meeting Wayne and Sherrie, wonderful hosts.

Thanks Cathy. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you and Dan again.
The perfect getaway from it all. This small cottage is a perfect escape trom it all. It is well appointed and cheerfully decorated. The surrounding countryside provides stunning views. I would definitely recommend this destination to anyone seeking a respite in the country.
My only suggestion to improve the cabin? Add a screen door. This time of year, they all want to get in!
Wayne & Sherrie are great hosts!

Lovely, exceptionally well appointed Cottage.
Besides being a beautiful location, and with amazing gardens and flowers, I can't say enough about how perfectly appointed this Cottage is. Every little amenity you could think of is considered, and a bunch you wouldn't. From high quality bed and bedding (with 2 side heat adjust) to a heat fan in the bath to q-tips, and labels and notes a plenty. And all looking spottless, brand new, while maintaining the Cottage feel. Highly highly recommend.

What a Wonderful Place to Stay!
Our stay at The Garden Cottage was wonderful. The cottage was cozy and homey with just the right amount of space for two. The hosts, Wayne and Sherrie, have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. They were very accommodating and gave us a lot of helpful advice/info about the area. All though the cottage is right next door to the main house, we never felt our privacy was compromised. The cottage porch was a great place to relax after a busy day of adventure – flowers and hummingbirds abound with nice views of the surrounding rolling countryside.
The cottage is in a great location for visiting the Driftless area of Wisconsin. Close enough to restaurants and shopping but far enough out to be quiet and close to nature. Area musts: Bike the Elroy-Sparta trail, Kayak the Kickapoo River (We suggest Drifty’s Canoe Rental in Ontario), Hike the Old Settler’s Trail loop at Wildcat Mountain State Park (Scenic views), and eat at the Driftless Café in Viroqua (Wonderful food) and Borgens Café in Westby (Awesome breakfast and the BEST PIE EVER!!)
Oh and one more thing – If you like your morning coffee as much as we do, stop in to the Viroqua Food Co-op and pick up one (or several ;) packages of the Kickapoo Coffee. (Organic Driftless is our favorite – so incredibly smooth!)
Hope to visit again soon, Cassie & Mark Richards

Clean, Cozy, Quiet
When I travel I generally prefer solitude where I stay, along with a comfortable bed and a modern bathroom. This place has all that and more. The bed is extremely comfortable and the bathroom is practically better than I have at home. I never used the kitchenette features or the washer/dryer but they all look top-notch as well. I could easily stay here for a week and not feel like I'm missing something.
It's 5 miles out of town so you'll need to have your own transportation. But I found the location to be excellent. The cottage is easy to find and very quiet. A big reason I avoid motels is the noise from neighbors. You won't have any problem with that here.
Sherrie and Wayne's cottage was the perfect choice for a weekend of fly fishing in the Driftless Area. When I arrived, I had a chance to sit down with them for a few minutes as they gave me suggestions for places to wet a line. Their advice turned out to be better than the suggestions of a few local guides. And they are very friendly and pleasant people in general.
It's a pretty safe bet that the next time I visit the area I'll be checking to see if the cottage is available. My only concern is that it will be too popular in the future!

Brett, thank you for taking the time to write your kind review of the cottage and your stay in the area. We were so impressed that despite the rain and unseasonably cold weather, you were very successful fishing and seemed to enjoy your stay. We are fortunate to be so close to Viroqua and to some great fishing and hiking and are happy to share our favorite places with guests. Thanks for being such a thoughtful guest and we hope to welcome you back in the near future. -Wayne & Sherrie
Very nice quiet location. Temps around zero at night cabin was cozy and warm. Very well kept .
Driving there in a Prius in blowing drifting snow not recommended.
We experienced lovely views from this little gem. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful for any questions that we had. They also shared some of their apples from their bumper orchard crop with us to take home. We would definitely recommend the Garden Cottage.
I only wish that I could wake up to that scenic view every morning. Beautiful location, quaint, clean cottage and wonderful hosts. We’d stay there again in a minute.
This lovely cottage had all we needed and more. I hope to return. The owners were kind, generous and very helpful. I so appreciate the thoughtfulness of items the cottage is stocked with along with the cleanliness. Thank you!
The cottage was SO clean and beautiful. The hosts were friendly and obviously cared that the guests had every amenity and enjoyed their stay.

About the host
Hosted by Wayne Ott
For over 15 years, Wayne & Sherrie traveled to the Viroqua area for their spring and fall camping and fishing trips. When Sherrie retired in 2014, they moved to Viroqua and are happy to be living in such a beautiful and friendly area. Before the move, Wayne worked as a cartographer with the US Geological Service and Sherrie with the USDA as a resource conservationist, working with farmers and private landowners on conservation practices, wetland restoration, prairie establishment and supporting the Conservation Reserve Program's wildlife enhancement practices.
Why they chose this property
Vernon County has so much to offer, including winding roads through beautiful hills and valleys, world-class trout streams, large open areas for hiking like the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a large organic and Amish communities that offer their unique products. The Kickapoo River near Ontario offers scenic canoeing and kayaking, and there are several bike trails including the Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse River trail within easy driving. Some of our visitors head to the nearby Mississippi River to pan fish. Birdwatchers can enjoy bald eagles and a host of migratory birds as they travel along the big river. Our property is home to numerous songbirds including Eastern Meadowlarks, Northern Orioles, Bluebirds, Red Headed Woodpeckers, Kestrels, Hummingbirds as well as wild turkeys, deer, owls and pheasants. Viroqua is a friendly community with interesting small shops and a couple of restaurants serving locally-sourced food. We are just a few miles from two wineries with tasting rooms.
What makes this property unique
We try to be very responsive to our guests, and we add amenities whenever our guests request something. Whenever possible we use unscented soaps and cleaning materials. All you will smell is the fresh air. We added extra towels, some nice kitchen supplies, and high speed fiber optic internet so the Wi-Fi signal is stronger and faster. We want our guests to be delighted with their stay. The Garden Cottage is located in an incredibly quiet area, where you will hear birds and breezes but no traffic. The views from the ridge top are incredible; enjoy the big skies, sun and moon rises, stunning clouds and frequent rainbows. The inside of the cottage has a calming decor with soft colors and high quality linens and towels.
