Explore the Outdoors in Every Season
When you stay at Sweet Retreat, you don’t have to leave the premises to explore the great outdoors. Open the front door and enjoy the many miles of trails we’ve created and keep open for your walking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing pleasure.
Slow Down & Get Close to Nature
Relax on the large porch and watch the sunrise over Spruce Mountain. View deer grazing in the back fields. Wander down to the pond to observe beavers at work, or grab your binoculars and look for American bitterns and blue herons.
Visit with our Show Oxen
Spend some time at the barn—visit with our show oxen, and if the timing is right watch them in training. For a truly unique Vermont experience, arrange for a ride in our custom-made ox cart, or in winter a sleigh ride through the woods pulled by our team of Durham-Herefords, Bright and Lion.
Learn How We Make Pure Vermont Gold® Maple Syrup!
Sugaring season at Sweet Retreat occurs in early spring when the sap runs in our 200-acre hillside maple grove. Stop by our state-of-the-art sugarhouse to experience the sights, smells and sounds of sugaring as we boil the sap that flows from our sugar maples into Pure Vermont Gold®. Taste the warm syrup as it is drawn off the evaporator—a sweet Vermont experience that you will long remember.

About the host
Hosted by Hannah and Ray Morvan
Sweet Retreat is owned by Ray and Hannah Morvan, who built the Guesthouse for short- and long-term rentals to accommodate Norwich University and central Vermont visitors. Hannah, a retired elementary school teacher, and member of the Vermont Philharmonic is also active in the family's state-of-the art maple sugaring business, Sweet Retreat Sugarworks, and assists her husband and grandchildren with the show oxen. Ray, an entrepreneur and wonderful storyteller, also runs a stone and a firewood business and offers customized etched bottles for their syrup operation. He trains show oxen, along with his grandchildren, and participates in fairs around New England.
Why they chose this property
Sweet Retreat is home to the Morvan family, the sugarmaking operation and Heritage Ox Farm. The guesthouse is an extension of the multi-faceted family business and is located near the mainhouse on 400 acres, yet is easily accessible to I-89, downtown Northfield and adjoining towns.
What makes this property unique
Sweet Retreat offers scenic views, 400 acres of natural beauty and quietude, with seven miles of trails for all season recreation. The beautifully maintained grounds, the state-of-the art 5500 tap sugaring operation, and 4 teams of show oxen make this a unique Vermont experience.
