Las Almendras is a rental property on the Southern tip of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. The home offers privacy and comfort in an extraordinary jungle setting. Take in breathtaking views of Costa Rica’s natural wildlife from the patio. This two-acre property rises gradually from Backwash Beach and stretches across a section of lush tropical gardens backing up to a mountainside draped in abundant rainforest. The home is situated at the base of the mountain, approximately 40 meters above the water and 150 yards from the sand. There is a peekaboo view of the water through the palms and almond trees. The open-air design of the home takes advantage of both mountain and ocean breezes throughout the day.

The house design optimizes outdoor living space. The pool deck is located in front of the kitchen, which is adjacent to the main living space. There are two bedrooms, each with their own sitting area, and full bathroom. In front of the bedrooms is a large covered patio that consists of a dining area and living room. Just off the patio is another open-air deck tucked against the hillside and surrounded by foliage for shade.

Throughout the booking process, you will work with a full time property manager. The property manager is able to assist with travel arrangements and answer any questions you might have. Once you arrive, they will provide a concierge service assisting with tours and providing information about the area. A cleaning service is provided every 3 days and is included in the stay. There is also a 24hr onsite caretaker that can handle maintenance issues during your stay.

Las Almendras is perfect for couples or a small family looking for adventure and relaxation in a remote jungle setting.

The property was amazing wild life grazing, playing and passing through that were stunning. We saw more here from our balcony than we did in Corcovado and the space is perfect for relaxing and sharing good company

Jungle and surfing

Beautiful property well manicured. The care takers and Gretchen were really nice and helpful. The nature viewing from the house was amazing every day. The surf was unreal and right across the road.

Wonderful Stay

Great location and easy to find. The first 17 km of the road from Puerto Jimenez is great, the last 1km to the house is very rough, but doable. The house is very spacious and clean, and has a well stocked kitchen. The hot water was temperamental, but worked. The small swimming pool was amazing! The yard has lots of wildlife. There were curassow on the lawn when we arrived, and we saw 3/4 kinds of monkeys in the yard within 24 hours of arrival. We we highly recommend this property.

Lovely home near beaches in Matapalo

The house is pretty much as seen on the VRBO page - two large bedrooms and a large, very comfortable open living area overlooking a lawn and rain forest. It is all open air - and while we were there, very warm with only fans over the beds. Also an open kitchen separate from the living area that worked fairly well. The only shopping is far away in Puerto Jimenez, and only one (expensive) restaurant nearby (there may be another in a hotel we did not try) - so be prepared to do all of your shopping before going to the house. We had a wonderful time with two small children (6 and 9 - on air beds) and highly recommend it. Be aware of a very challenging dirt road to get to the property from Puerto Jimenez and especially close to the property.

Surrounded by nature

The house is spacious and the place (OSA) full of nature. Gretchen promptly addressed our concerns. The house keeper is a very kind and attentive person. Problems: the house has no windows or mosquito netting. When you sleep, you don't know who you're going to wake up next to! Also, the beds are not king size (problem for tall or large people).

Beautiful Home in Matapalo

We had an amazing stay at this beautiful home! We watched spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and scarlet macaws in the trees around the property. We hand fed capuchin, which I know is frowned upon, but it was amazing! Also, we saw a poison dart frog on the driveway! On the days the surf was small and the tide was high my family and I swam for hours at backwash across the street from the house. It was heavenly! It was a bit hot at night and the fan blew right into the mosquito netting. I used very tiny hair clips to ensure the opening of the netting stayed closed with the fan going. The fan in one of the rooms is very load so ear plugs are recommended. Get ready for an amazing adventure!

Spectacular Location

This home is beautiful and the support team is truly helpful without being overly present. The property is hard to find, and the road it's on is definitely only for 4x4's, but once you're there it's breathtaking. The sheer number of animals that are present on the property is frankly breathtaking, and I say that as someone who has been to CR 7-8 times previously: agouti, coati, collared peccaries, hawks, macaws, parrots, toucans, morpho butterflies, insects of all sizes and shapes, etc. etc. As other reviews have pointed out: this is rustic luxury. There are no windows in the openings, and mosquito netting keeps the bugs from you at night, but it wasn't a problem for us and if you know what you're getting then it shouldn't be for you either. You will be living amongst nature, which is a big part of why we keep coming to CR. The private splash pool is a dream and we ended up spending the majority of our time there even though the beach is a hop skip and a jump away (and beautiful!). Dining options are (very) thin nearby, so your best bet is to do your own cooking, and to shop in Puerto Jimenez before you arrive. We had a truly wonderful stay and would definitely come back to this home again.

MONKEYS!!!! An amazing spot... and so much more...

We are two brothers... both software devs escaping to the wilds of Osa... and Almendras (the property) was AMAZING. First off, the surroundings are amazing. We cooked every day, the outdoor kitchen and barbeque are great. Great full sized fridge and stove. We didn't request chef service, so can't comment on that - but that was our choice, so not an issue. No windows, all open air. Surrounded by trees, teaming with monkeys! They're around all day. Lapas everywhere as well (scarlet macaws) flying around in pairs. Incredible for nature lovers to have a coffee and watch a family of monkeys flying through the trees.... Make sure you have sturdy transportation... it's remote, and the road is bumpy... but it's worth the trek. Quiet, completely serene. (Occasional music from neighbours, but - what can you do.) GREAT internet. It can't be guaranteed, but it was up for 95% of our time. Streaming included. (There's no TV, so if you need a fix, bring screens.) Cleaning and maintenance was *impeccable*. Mostly while we were in town or at the beach. Like magic. We returned to spotless premises. Beautifully made beds. Beach and bath towels. Top notch service by Alfredo, Roxy and the rest of the crew. Compost/organics and recyclables were also cleared out during cleaning. Really hope to get back here in the future. One of my best trips to Costa Rica!

Slice of paradise

My husband and I were fortunate enough to spend 8 nights in Matapalo. The house is amazing, across the street from an incredible surf break. I enjoyed sitting on the porch watching scarlet macaws fly by and watching monkeys. We saw more wildlife from that house than we did on a 10 Hr hike through Corcovado. The caretakers were wonderful, available to help with anything we needed. Gretchen arranged a private chef for us and was available to give us recommendations. We will definitely be back!

Very nice property!

Beaches were beautiful. The short hike to the King Louis waterfall was great. Kitchen was very well appointed. But do not expect to see a toaster or microwave as the house is solar powered. The fan above our beds came in handy but we found ourselves a bit cool and turned it off after midnight. The birdlife and wildlife in the area were the best. You don't even need to walk far to see some amazing sights. Staff were very responsive to our needs. It was great to explore the local eateries. Encantra De Vida is a short drive. The meals we had there were exquisite. The Yoga classes are also very good. My only advice to future travellers is arrive at the house during daylight hours. Get provisions in Jimenez because you'll be holed in for a few days. It's a long, bumpy ride! Thank you, Theodore, Gretchen, Antonio and staff. Great value, great house, beautiful area.

Magical spot

This is a lovely property with great outdoor living spaces. Many places to relax, and even a side yoga platform that is shaded. You will see monkeys, scarlet macaws, coatis, and more. The kitchen was well-stocked and the place was very clean. The grounds are well-tended and the pool is kept clean. There are no windows or screens on the windows, so if you are not comfortable with bugs or bats passing through, it might not be for you. We found it to be an awesome escape and really enjoyed it.

Matapala Getaway

Cabo Matapalo was beautiful and just what we are hoping for. It was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. We loved sitting on the porch and watching monkeys, Scarlett McCaws, hawks, etc… and hiking up and down the coast. Everyone we met were lovely especially Maria.

Beautiful home in Beautiful location

If you're looking to experience nature, the jungle and outdoor living this is the place. Loved the wildlife - monkies, agoutis, macaws, etc. The pool was just the right size the cool off, or for the kids to play in while we cooked dinner - loved that you could see it from the kitchen. We enjoyed playing games in the open air living space after dinner every night. Be prepared for a long drive from town, but it's all part of the charm. Walk to beaches, waterfalls, and plentiful wildlife viewing. The only restaurant in matapalo is absolutely delicious. You pass it on your way in so you'll know where it is. We ate there twice. The only thing I'd change if I could was the shower temp. It was either really hot or really cold. But again, all part of the experience ;) The caretakers are fantastic and gretchen is really quick to respond to any questions or issues. We'd definitely stay here again! We had 2 adults and our 3 kids.
