About this property

Ethel’s Cottage Gull Lake Beach, Dock & Boat Lift near Grand View Lodge

Welcome to Ethel’s Cottage on Gull Lake

Relax and unwind at Ethel’s Cottage, our beloved family lake cabin on the north end of Gull Lake in Nisswa, Minnesota. Built in 1922 and full of classic knotty-pine charm, this one-level lakefront cottage is one of the last true old-school cabins on Gull Lake.

If you are looking for sandy beach days, dock time, sunset views, beach fires, boating, fishing, paddle boarding, and a real Minnesota “up north” getaway, this is it.

Ethel’s Cottage is located on Gull Lake’s “Gold Coast,” just steps from Grand View Lodge, Minnesota’s premier golf and spa resort. Guests can walk to public areas of Grand View Lodge for dining, coffee, ice cream, spa services, golf, and more. You are also just minutes from downtown Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Crosslake, Baxter, and Brainerd.

A Classic Gull Lake Cabin

Ethel’s Cottage has been in our family for more than 50 years and was Ethel’s full-time residence for over 10 years. The cabin has the warmth and character guests love in a vintage Minnesota lake cottage, including knotty pine throughout, hardwood floors, cozy gathering spaces, and lake views.

This is not a new-build luxury home. It is a historic 1922 lake cabin with charm, character, and thoughtful updates for guest comfort. We have refreshed the cabin with new bedding, new mattresses, updated design touches, a new refrigerator, an added garage refrigerator, new washer and dryer, coffee bar area, fans, and a new grill while keeping the relaxed, nostalgic feel of a true Gull Lake cottage.

The Space

The cottage includes:

3 bedrooms
1 bathroom
Fully stocked kitchen
Stackable washer/dryer
New bedding and mattresses
New refrigerator
Additional garage refrigerator for drinks, groceries, and lake-day overflow
Coffee bar area
55” Roku TV with streaming
Wi-Fi
Game and puzzle cabinet
Gas grill
One-level layout
Detached 1-car garage for storage only

The home is cozy, casual, and designed for lake living. It works well for families, couples, golfers, boaters, anglers, and guests who want an easy, comfortable cabin stay in one of the best locations in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

Sleeping Arrangements
Bedroom 1: Queen bed
Bedroom 2: Queen bed
Bedroom 3: Queen Bed and Double bed

The cottage has one bathroom, but each bedroom includes a mirror so guests can comfortably get ready in their own space.

Comfort Notes

This is a historic lake cabin with a vintage layout and one bathroom. There is no central air conditioning, but the cabin is equipped with AC units in the main living areas, ceiling fans, and fans in each bedroom.

Guests who enjoy classic Minnesota lake cabins will appreciate the knotty-pine charm, hardwood floors, lakefront setting, sandy beach, dock, and relaxed “up north” feel.

Lakefront & Outdoor Space

The outdoor space is one of the best parts of Ethel’s Cottage. The cabin sits on a level lakefront lot with a sandy beach and easy access to the water. No steep climb, no complicated shoreline, just simple lake life steps from the door.

Outdoor features include:

Level sandy beach
Private dock with swim ladder
Fishing and swimming dock
Paddleboards
Beach fire ring
Outdoor seating
Small patio
Lakefront deck
Gas grill
Canopied solar-powered boat lift
Beautiful Gull Lake views
Sunrise and sunset views over the lake

Enjoy morning coffee by the water, afternoons swimming or boating, and evenings around the beach fire ring. The lakefront is easy to use and ideal for families, couples, and anyone who wants to spend as much time outside as possible.

Boat Lift & Dock

A guest boat lift is available with advance approval. The lift has a 5,000 lb maximum capacity and may accommodate fishing boats, runabouts, pontoons, or tritoons depending on boat size, style, and setup.

Boat lift use requires completion of a Boat Lift and Dock Rental Agreement. If adjustments are needed to accommodate your boat, a $200 adjustment fee applies. No overnight tying to the dock or lift is allowed.

There are two boat lifts on site. One is available for guest use with approval, and the second is reserved for our family boat. We may occasionally access our boat from the lakefront area only, but we will not stay on the property or enter the cabin during your stay.

The nearest public boat ramp is only a few miles away.

Pets

Ethel’s Cottage is pet friendly with prior approval. Up to 2 pets are allowed, under 50 lbs each. Pet fee and signed pet addendum are required.

Garage & Guest Access

Guests have access to the cabin, lakefront, dock, beach, outdoor seating areas, patio, deck, grill, and garage storage area. The detached garage is for storage only and may be used for items such as beach chairs, water toys, paddleboards, bikes, and lake gear.

Guests do not have access to one locked storage room and one locked storage shed, both attached to the garage.

Perfectly matched our expectations

Great property and perfect location for a stay. House was rustic yet clean and the beds were comfortable. The classic waffle iron was a hit several mornings and fire pit evenings were peaceful and charming. Can not wait to come back here.

Property was exactly as described. Excellent location. On that part of the lake, having access to a lift is almost a necessity. Only negative comment would be the lighting inside the home could be improved a little bit.

Golf trip

We had 5 guys on a golf trip. This cabin has an old charm and coziness to it that’s so relaxing. Very easy to unwind here and enjoy a wonderful stay on the shores of beautiful Gull Lake. Very clean throughout as well. Located conveniently for short boat rides to Zorbaz or Ernie’s for lunch/dinner. The owners were very thorough with the entire process. They were prompt in their replies any time I had questions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Loons singing you to sleep

What a lovely cabin! Amy and Marty have a real gem here. The spacious layout with knotty pine throughout really gives this cabin the up north feel. Gull lake is absolutely beautiful, good fishing and enjoyable bird watching. The park like front yard has an abundance of squirrels which we enjoyed feeding peanuts to. But the best was campfires on the beach and falling asleep every night to the sounds of the loons. What a great memory.

Great property

Had a great time during our stay. The process was easy for check in and out. Cabin is bigger than it looked online. Very clean. Windows could use some work and an exhaust fan in the bathroom would be nice. Overall great experience and I would rent again.

The location of the property and the access to the lake where great. We spent a lot of time on the w

The location, lake and the beach are fantastic. The cabin could use a good cleaning and much yard work. (mowing, weeding, trimming, tree trimming) Some of the windows did not open, some had no screens or torn screens. In the informational book on the cabin, the owners wrote that some of the windows did not open "good luck". Windows were extremely dirty. Shower curtain has not been changed in a long time. The shower did not drain well and we resorted to cleaning out the drain ourselves. We could not see the lake from the deck because of the untrimmed tree/bush. There were cobwebs under furniture. Within the 2 weeks we were there, we found a wallet and a checkbook from 2 previous renters. The washer and dryer could be updated or repaired since the dryer door is held shut by duct tape. My family enjoyed the 2 weeks at the cabin. We will rent from VRBO in the future but no this property. I do not feel that I am overly picky, but I do like a clean, well kept and maintained rental property.

It has been many years since this family stayed with us, and at that time I did not feel it was necessary to respond to this review. What they didn’t say is that we were very responsive to their numerous complaints. Yet they were not respectful of us or our property. I was glad to see they would not stay again, as they would not be welcome. They had many more people on site than we allow, which we let go. We allowed a golf cart for them to use and they tore up our yard. They had numerous complaints which is unfortunate as I do my best to ensure our description is accurate. This is a property that is 100 years old. It is a cabin, not a new million dollar home on the lake. They were excessive in their complaints and make it sound terrible, which is just not true. This is for people who want to stay in an excellent location in our area, enjoy the lake and beach and yard, and appreciate the experience of staying in an adorable and charming cabin that is full of memories.

Ethel’s Cottage has been in our family for over 50 years and was Ethel’s full-time home for many of those years. It has been the backdrop for countless family memories.

This is not just an investment property to us. It is a place we love. We have gathered here for beach days, boating, fishing, family meals, sunsets, coffee on the deck, and all the simple moments that make lake life special.

By sharing Ethel’s Cottage with guests, we hope others can enjoy the same classic Minnesota “up north” experience our family has treasured for decades. We continue to make updates for comfort while preserving the historic knotty-pine charm that makes the cabin feel like stepping back into an old-school Gull Lake vacation.

Our hope is to care for and share this cottage for many more years, so our family and yours can keep making memories on Gull Lake.

Why they chose this property

We chose this neighborhood because it offers one of the best combinations of classic Gull Lake charm, convenience, and true “up north” lake life. Ethel’s Cottage is located on Gull Lake’s north end, just steps from Grand View Lodge, in a peaceful residential lakefront area with long-standing neighbors and a relaxed, family-friendly feel.

The location is hard to beat. Guests can walk to Grand View Lodge for dining, golf, spa services, coffee, ice cream, and resort amenities open to the public, while still enjoying the privacy and simplicity of a family cabin on the water. Downtown Nisswa is only minutes away for shopping, restaurants, breweries, coffee, the Paul Bunyan Trail, and classic summer activities like the turtle races.

We also love that Gull Lake offers so much to do by water. Guests can boat to favorite lake restaurants, swim from the dock, paddleboard from the beach, fish, or simply enjoy sunsets and beach fires at the end of the day.

This neighborhood has the feel of old Gull Lake: established, peaceful, scenic, and close to everything, without losing the charm of a true Minnesota lake cabin getaway.

What makes this property unique

Ethel’s Cottage is one of the rare remaining classic Gull Lake cabins, built in 1922 and full of original knotty-pine charm, hardwood floors, and old-school Minnesota lake character. Located on Gull Lake’s north end, just steps from Grand View Lodge, it offers a hard-to-find combination of history, location, and easy lakefront living.

The property sits on a level lot with a sandy beach, swimming/fishing dock, paddleboards, beach fire ring, outdoor seating, small patio, and beautiful lake views. Guests can enjoy sunrise, sunset, swimming, boating, beach fires, and relaxed lake days just steps from the door.

Unlike many newer or heavily remodeled lake homes, Ethel’s Cottage still feels like a true family cabin, but with thoughtful updates for comfort, including new bedding, new mattresses, new washer/dryer, new refrigerator, added garage fridge, refreshed coffee bar, fans, AC units in the main living areas, and a new grill.

The location is also special: walk to Grand View Lodge for dining, golf, spa, coffee, and ice cream, or head a few minutes into Nisswa for shops, restaurants, breweries, the Paul Bunyan Trail, and family fun. With a guest boat lift available by advance approval, guests can also explore Gull Lake’s boat-accessible restaurants and destinations.

It’s a cozy, pet-friendly, one-level lake cabin where the charm of the past meets the comfort and convenience of today.
