About this property
A charming cottage close to vibrant Mirepoix
The village is a group of about 30 houses, most of them pre-19th century, and a chapel. The snowy peaks of the Pyrenees are visible to the south. The house, situated on a very quiet road at the edge of the village, is built on sloping ground, It used to be a baking house and barn. It was renovated in 1991 as an artist's house and studio, and has been updated recently, with new bathrooms and an improved kitchen. It is a haven of peace, yet within 5 miles of vibrant Mirepoix. The ground floor (750 sqft) includes an open plan kitchen/dining area, and a spacious sitting area. The kitchen has a gas hotplate, electric oven, washing machine and fridge/freezer. Two large glass sliding doors lead to the decking terrace (10ft x 30ft), shaded by a grapevine, which overlooks the piece of land (1/2 acre) and the surrounding countryside. The main bedroom, which has an en suite bathroom/toilet, is also located on the ground floor. The second bedroom and bathroom/toilet are situated on the lower floor, opening onto a lower terrace which leads to the parking area. Mirepoix is the main centre locally for shopping, The weekly market, held every Monday on the central square, is always buzzing with activity. 6 miles to the south is beautiful lac de Montbel, which has a small beach and a dinghy sailing centre, Day trips offer many possibilities. A visit to the walled city of Carcassonne is a worthwhile experience. The Cathar castles of Montsegur, Puylaurens, Peyrepertuse and Queribus are within easy reach (about 40 miles), as well as the Gorges de Galamus. Beyond these is the Mediterranean coast at Perpignan and Collioure, just by the Spanish border.
