About this property

The Dell Blackheath NSW

A handcrafted spacious timber cottage with a contemporary feel and quality furniture highlighting Australian timbers. Featuring polished timber floorboards and wall panelling. Floor to ceiling windows & skylights puts you in touch with the sun & the sky and looks out into the bush.

The deck directly overlooks fern-studded Popes Glen (ie bush front) and the walking track to Govetts Leap. Although in a bush location the house has great walkability & is also close to the park, shops & cafes - walk to them in about 10 minutes along bushy streets & through parks.

Cosy double sided slow-combustion wood fireplace backed up by flued gas convection heaters (ie no fumes). Fully equiped with modern gas electric stove, microwave, TVs (main one a smart TV) and DVD/VCR, free WiFi, stereo & washing machine.

The house provides dining seating for 8 and lounge seating for 7. Outside on the deck there is a barbeque with outdoor dining seating plus there are a couple of other options to take your weekend house experience into the bush.

A recently added second bathroom offers a rain head shower and a private bush outlook. A third toilet is located outside.

The house accommodates up to 7 in 3 bedrooms and means its ideal for 2 couples or a family/singles group.

OK now for some fine print. This info is all elswhere on the site but just to be clear:

- the price quoted is based on the number of guests nominated in your enquiry & for more than 2 people are $40 per person per night
- The Dell is located in a quiet & tranquil location so it is a perfect place to relax and is not suitable for parties or groups wanting to have a noisy time
- the area abounds with native birdlife so pets are strictly not permitted at or in the house
- an initial supply of firewood enough for one night is included in your tariff but you may need to purchase more

About the host

Hosted by Phil Verner

Host profile image
I'm a retired designer (exhibition/interior) and wood craftsman who loves timber houses. I design and make furniture and sculptural pieces often using recycled and salvaged timber.
I'm currently restoring a timber house over 120 years old where I live with my wife Ann in Sydney.

Why they chose this property

I purchased the land where the house now stands and have designed, built, extended and furnished the house over 40 plus years.
As many trees were retained as possible and the house enjoys an outlook directly into the bush and overlooks the walking track to Govetts Leap.
While sitting in "urban bush" the house is only 10 -15 minutes very pleasant walk to Blackheath village with its cafes, restaurants, pubs & shops. The swimming pool (for summer) is even closer at the end of the street (5min walk)

What makes this property unique

This is not a "standard house". It features a unique design, timber flooring & panelling along with handcafted furniture & decorative features.
Care has been taken in the design to provide outlook and access for sun. Cross ventilation is available to provide comfort in summer including an "air chimney" to bring cool basement air into the main bedroom. A double sided wood fireplace is provided for winter backed up by two externally flued gas heaters (ie no fumes in the house). Electric wall panel heaters are provided in the upostairs bedrooms
A collection of largely B&W Australian photography is displayed in the house usually showing the Blue Mountains.
The house is in a moist pocket and the bush garden includes many tree ferns (4 different species)
