We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was clean and pet friendly. The host responded to my inquiries quickly. We enjoyed sitting in the hot tub in the evening. I wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the other amenities on the river.
Very helpful owner. Nice place right on the road, across the road from the river. You have to look over the neighbors for the river view, but the house is laid out well and has everything you need. Convenient to Luray and hiking trails.
Super clean. Well supplied. Charming. Beds are comfy with nice linens. I stay in a dozen or more rentals a year. This one is exceptional. Just bring ice.
We enjoyed our time at the Rock Tavern. It has nice rooms and layout. Plenty of space. Nice to wake up and sip coffee/read on the back covered porch or watch the sun come up from the front porch. Well stocked kitchen. Spa tub was a nice plus. Thank you!

Home away from home atmosphere
Very nice. River access down and across busy road, but could drive over. River was very rocky. House and amenities excellent. Loved the area.
Overall it was ok. Could have used more dinnerware utensils. The fact there are no doors to bedrooms is aggravating. Needs a better solution than curtains. Electrical switches are a pain to figure out. As an electrician I would be rewiring for sure. Otherwise it was comfortable. We would stay again!
Rock Tavern is a wonderful getaway! The cabin itself is comfortable and has all you need. We enjoyed the hot tub, the fire pit, and the grill during our weekend stay. The kitchen is great for making dinner, and the TV area is very comfortable. We really enjoyed the proximity to Rock Tavern Kamp and spent an afternoon enjoying the river side location. It's also a really great location to be near SNP, lots of breweries/wineries/distilleries, and many other area offerings! We were worried we'd miss the internet since there is no wifi and phone signal is spotty, but we truly loved the chance to really disconnect for a few days! And emails and messages came in here and there so we didn't miss anything important!
Wonderful place!!
The cabin was cute and in a quiet area. We thought the trail nearby was nice and the cabin was a great distance from caverns and national park. Others mentioned the curtains vs doors which we did not mind. Honeslty the cabin was pretty quiet even with having another couple and a young child. Hot tub was lovely and the view of the stars is so beautiful. Beds were comfy. There were some minor stains on the master bedroom sheets but Annette quickly addressed it and brought new sheets. We had trouble working a few things there but we informed Annette and I have no doubt she will address them before next stay (TV in master, ignitor on bbq, torn fitted sheet). Over all the cabin was clean but I did find 2 dead bugs in the vanity drawers and during our stay there was a mouse caught in a trap that we needed to disposed of. But you are out in the country these things will happen.
The cabin did not disappoint. It was very tastefully decorated and the. Beds were so comfortable.
The cabin was cute but needed a good cleaning of cobwebs and the jacuzzi tub had a terrible dirt ring around it.
When we got there the outside hot tub was so filthy I couldn’t beleive it. The manager came herself the next afternoon and changed the water. We could not get the temperature warm enough to use it our 4 day stay . Outside on the porches is so big and nice but extremely dirty. It needs a good pressure wash all the way around . If someone would take a little time and clean up the outside and maybe plant some pretty flowers and put some pretty furniture outside , this place would be the cutest thing ever .
All in all the place was nice and by having the most comfy mattresses ever , I would stay again but I would def want to be able to use the hot tub.
I absolutely have no complaints at all. We had a wonderful weekend. The cabin showed exactly as it is in the photographs perhaps, even a little better.
It was spotless to the point that I can honestly say I haven’t ever stayed at a hotel that was any cleaner. I had great concerns over Covid but was completely comfortable in this beautiful cabin.
The only slight disappointment, and it was slight, is that I believed from the photographs that you would have a clear view of the river and that the river and small pier were directly across the street when actually it was down the road a little.
That certainly was not a dealbreaker and we would look forward to coming back for a visit again as well as highly recommending to our family and friends.
The property owner/manager couldn’t have been more accommodating. I was a bit of a pest because of Covid but she certainly didn’t make me feel that it bothered her at all and was completely professional at all times.
We enjoyed our stay very much, we went to a family wedding close by. The weather was perfect and we did see some deer in the woods behind the house. We went fishing off Bixley low water bridge and caught a couple of squaw fish. All decorations are excellent and we are thinking about going back to Luray in May 2026.
The property was very beautiful and well kept. Beautiful views of both the mountains and river. The furniture and hot tub on the back porch provided the perfect way to relax and spend the day and evening. The full size kitchen had every convenience needed to make cooking a meal easy. Dishwasher provided made cleanup just as easy. Two large bedrooms with full bathrooms made for a comfortable stay. We have stayed in a couple of places in Luray and this was by far our favorite.
The property is cute. Some things I wish I knew:
1) despite the listing saying in 2 places there was WiFi, there isn’t. Instructions are to go to places up the road to use WiFi. In a world where folks work while vacationing, this is a major discrepancy.
2) there are no doors on the bedrooms. There are curtains, so it wasn’t a problem for my girls trip but if you’re hoping for some private time this could be an issue.
3) the house is on well water. Be prepared to buy drinking water and for your shower to smell sulfur-y
4) there are a lot of chemicals in the hot tub - we had to let it bubble for a few minutes before entering to minimize the coughing…
On the bright side:
1) large bedroom space - lots of room to move around even w all the luggage
2) pet friendly and good size yard
3) gas and charcoal grill available for use
4) washer/dryer on site allows you to pack less
5) host was quick with responses (albeit a bit curt)
Communication was excellent.
Was told the hot tub was not in operation but a portable hot tub had been made available.
A nice touch after spending the day on the river.
We had such a good time there! A much needed break from the world!

About the host

I own the 1850's Massanutten Springs (log cabin) -restored it and now is a weekend rental... I got started in this business because I was taking care of my mother and needed additional help - although mom (Charlotte Good Kibler) passed away before completion she would be proud I know. As a single mother I just want to provide for my daughter and her future, which is why I decided to purchase the Rock Tavern property when the opportunity presented itself - my late father Aaron P Kibler would be proud to see the Rock Tavern back in the family - Uncle Abe was his brother. Aunt Lizzy was one of my favorite Aunts- always smiling! I believe 'Horses can Soothe your Soul' - if you visit Massanutten Springs website under horse tales - you will see a few of ours! If you have never ridden, take a trail ride- you will love it, if you have your own horses- you already know...RIDE OFTEN! With portable fencing we can be horse friendly at both properties. Best Regards, Annette K. Cates
Why they chose this property
I am now the proud owner of the 1947 Rock Tavern Retreat as my late Uncle Abe and late Aunt Lizzie owned, built and tended bar in the original stone tavern for years. ATK & 1947 is still in the stone walls and I am grateful to have the opportunity to get this property back in the family and we ( my daughter Jade and I) look forward to sharing with our guests the awesome history of the Rock Tavern.
What makes this property unique
The 1947 Rock Tavern Retreat offers plenty of space for reconnecting with friends and family, a couples retreat indeed. The master bedroom suite offers a King Bed, an infared modular fireplace, has a private deck entrance and a fabulous view of the beautiful Shenandoah River. The theatre style leather recliners forces you to relax! The original stone shows thru in several rooms and just accents this cabin - it is quite unique!
