ELEGANT COMFORT AND GARDEN PARADISE IN PANAJACHEL WITH MAYAN SAUNA AND SECURITY!
ENJOY YOUR OWN PARADISE! A jewel of Panajachel, Casa Carolina is a beautiful, recently remodeled home with skylights set in lush tropical gardens providing modern elegance, comfort and security for your stay. A fully-equipped kitchen and outdoor patios enable you to enjoy meals at home. High speed 30 mega DSL WiFi and two work stations make working at home easy. There is great hot water and a full tub and shower. A traditional Mayan sauna, comfortable beds with both soft and firm pillows and luxury 100% cotton linens and towels from the states allow you to relax in comfort. We have a washer and dryer as well as outdoor clothesline. Magical garden pathways and the sound of running water make it a paradise of beauty - your own private sanctuary just a short walk or 5 minute tuk-tuk ride from town. There is on-site parking if you have a car. One or two friendly dogs are allowed by permission of the owner. No cats please. House manager Carmelina will greet you, give the keys and show you the house and property. She can arrange house cleaning for longer stays. Our long-time house caretaker and gardener Juan will help you with your bags and other needs. His dog Rico lives in a fenced in area at the back of the property. Our staff is very friendly, helpful and professional and will do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. Please note there is a potential for road noise and occasional barking. We look forward to hosting you at Casa Carolina!
Detailed Description: Guests say that the photos do not convey the beauty of the house or its garden paradise - likened by one recent guest to a nature preserve! Casa Carolina is newly remodeled and furnished to provide comfort, beauty and luxury to our guests. It is open and full of light from many sky lights and windows. The decor is a contemporary Guatemalan style with modern comfortable furniture combined with traditional hand made Guatemalan "roperos" and "trasteros." Original paintings and antique Guatemala textiles provide color and accents in the unique decor. Fresh flowers, fruit, coffee and tea are provided when you arrive.
The house has one bedroom with a queen-size bed, as well as a single day bed in the living room to comfortably accommodate up to 3 people. A sofa also makes into an additional bed to accommodate a fourth person comfortably for a short period of time. The beds have new orthopedic mattresses, 100% cotton high quality sheets and a mosquito net, although mosquitoes are rare in the Highlands. The spacious Mexican-tiled bathroom has a tub and shower with on-demand hot water. Fluffy towels and 100% cotton linens are provided as well as soap, a shampoo sample and hairdryer.
The living room has a new flat screen 28" Smart TV with both English, German, French and Spanish Cable TV as well as Netflix. There are two work stations - one in the living room and one in the kitchen area. The 30 Mega DSL high-speed Wifi allows you to use your computer and electronic devices at these stations, as well as outside on the patios.
The kitchen is large and fully equipped with everything you need. It has a 4-burner gas stove, oven and a full size refrigerator. There is also a new microwave, coffee maker, toaster and blender. Contemporary style dishes and silverware are provided along with pots, pans and utensils for cooking and baking. Basic cooking items of salt, pepper and vegetable oil, as well as coffee and a variety of teas, are provided. There is a separate indoor dining area, as well as 2 outdoor patios with dining tables and chairs. A third patio has chairs for relaxing outdoors. There is a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and a fire extinguisher in the event of an emergency.
The extensive and magical gardens have tropical plants and flowers, pathways, and a creek with small bridges. Hummingbirds and butterflies abound in the garden during their season. The forested mountainside towers steeply above making it feel like your own peaceful sanctuary. Guests says that the photos cannot capture the extensiveness and beauty of this very special garden! There is a potential for noise because of the proximity of the road outside the garden walls.
The property is very secure with a high traditional adobe wall with "tejas" tiles and inside parking for one vehicle with it's own gate.
The newly remodeled traditional Mayan sauna is tucked privately into a corner of the property and also has an outdoor cold shower.
There is a new washing machine and dryer available for our guest's convenience as well as a traditional outside wash basin "pila" and clothesline to dry the clothes.
Casa Carolina has a staff of 2 people available to serve you as needed:
Carmelina, the house manager who speaks Spanish but understands English is very friendly, professional and eager to assure your stay is enjoyable. She will greet you upon your arrival, give you the keys and a tour of the property. She is available by phone and happy to serve you whenever you have a question or problem. She can arrange house cleaning for stays over a week.
Juan, the house caretaker and gardener for over 30 years, has a small house at the back of the property and is available to assist you in any way needed. He works 7am-7pm Monday through Friday, Saturday 7am-2pm and is off Sunday. He also leaves for breakfast about 10 am for one hour and for lunch about 2pm for 1 1/2 hours. Juan can be called by telephone at anytime if there is an emergency at the property and he is not there. Juan only speaks Spanish, but manages to understand those only speaking English. He is friendly, reliable and very respectful of your privacy and personal property. He is glad to help carry your luggage, make fires for you in the sauna and fireplace, open the parking gate for you, and generally assists in any way needed. Juan has a shy but rather large dog named "Rico” who lives in a fenced in area at the back of the property. He is friendly and playful and full of energy. Juan likes to let him run in the front yard under his supervision for a little while in the mornings to give him some exercise if it is not a bother to you and if you have not brought your own dog.
Children are welcome by permission of the owner. We have a very clean irrigation ditch that runs through the property making a lovely sound of running water. However, even though the water is not deep, it is potentially dangerous for children if they fall in. Children must be cautioned to not run and play around the water. Young toddlers of 1 to 3 years in age are not permitted. Children from 4 to 6 years old are allowed by special permission by the owner. Older children and infants who do not walk are very welcome! Parents are responsible at all times for the safety of their children both inside the house and on the property. We do not want any accidents!
One or two well-behaved, friendly dogs of non-aggressive breeds are permitted by permission of the owner. Owners are responsible for their dogs at all times and responsible for any damage they may do to the house and property. Dogs are not permitted on the beds or furniture. They also may not be left unattended inside the house. Juan can be asked to watch your dogs outside. Cats are not allowed.
Guests have access to the entire house and property, except for a locked upstairs storage room and the guardian's house in the back.
For monthly rentals: Since a substantial discount is given for monthly rentals, we have the following policies for commodities provided. The first 5 gallon bottle of water and the first tank of propane gas is included. When they are finished, please ask the guardian Juan to bring you more and pay him for the cost yourself. Also, a portion of firewood is included for your use. Once this is finished please buy your own firewood, either yourself or with the help of Juan. We also ask that you do not keep the outside lights on all night or over use the electric dryer because of the high cost of electricity. There is a cap of Q350 on the electricity you can use. If you exceed that, Carmelina will give you the bill and you pay her directly for the amount you exceeded.
Monthly rental guests leaving the property for overnight trips are asked to pay the guardian his standard rate of Q50 or about $6.50/night for staying the night to take care of the house in their absence.
The owner, Carolyn Dailey, who lives in the USA, is available for questions and assistance at anytime. Contact her by internet via VRBO or by home phone at (+1) 435-259-4244 or by cell phone and What's Ap at (+1) 719-588-2283..

About the host
Hosted by Carolyn Dailey
I love the beauty of nature and other cultures! Once a professionaI, I was a college administrator and school program evaluator and have a masters degree in Experimental Psychology. But I retired at an early age to become a full-time artist and international traveler. In 1985-86 I took a 13 month trip by myself around the world. I went everywhere I ever dreamed of and it changed my life. The USA seemed so blah afterwards. I wondered what it would be like to live in another country and not just visit. When I visited Guatemala in 1987 it reminded me of my favorite country from my trip - Nepal - with the steep terraced fields, misty mountains, and colorful people. I feel in love with it and returned to paint, trading houses with a friend for 7 months in 1990. I came back again the next year to paint some more paintings for a Guatemala show and it led me to move there and buy my gorgeous house. I paint in the plein air outdoor landscape tradition using oils and occasionally watercolor. My paintings have been in shows and galleries both in the Southwest USA and in Guatemala where I lived for 16 years and still maintain this residence. Among my accomplishments, In 1999 I had a one-woman show at the Ixchel Museum in Guatemala City. The house is decorated with some of my work. I returned to live in the USA in 2006 and now reside in Moab, Utah - another beautiful place. But my heart is still in Guatemala and I plan to return to live there again someday.
Why they chose this property
My house is a very special older property built in the early 1970's by a gringo. The house itself has been remodeled over the years since I have owned it so that only the walls are still the same and even they have new stucco and paint! The house has all the modern conveniences with an artistic style. The outstanding feature of the property is the large, very magical garden and forested hillside towering above. It is secluded, private, secure and very quiet for Panajachel - my own private sanctuary just a few minutes from the bustle of town.
What makes this property unique
A few years ago I remodeled and refurbished the house in a high-end contemporary style with a Guatemalan influence. It has the comfort and luxury of the states with the charm and beauty of Guatemala. The sky lights and high ceiling make it feel spacious and bright. The colorful decor of original art and antiques, Mexican bathroom tiles and sink, and lots of wood in the windows, doors and ceiling give it charming inner warmth. Handmade Guatemalan wooden furniture, hand woven textiles are combined with a contemporary furniture creating a very special decor. I love how the windows all open into the gardens giving an indoor-outdoor connection. A unique feature is the traditional Mayan wood-fired sauna, also newly remodeled, with a new wooden bench, heating system and outdoor cold shower. Casa Carolina is a one of a kind property - called by a local real estate office a "jewel" of Panajachel! It is perfect for a couple, or a couple with a child or friend along. Our Guatemalan staff is available to serve you.
