Sleepy Wombat Cottage is a fully self-contained forest retreat, yet is only minutes away from the vibrant village of Warburton. The riverside township bustles with cafe's and quirky shops and is host to a delightful range of festivals from comedy, film, harmony, music and many more.
The romantic spa cottage provides all the cosy comforts for a relaxing getaway. Recline on the sofa in front of a crackling wood fire or sit outside on a balmy summer evening listening to the wildlife or feeding the birds.
For the more active minded the cottage is perfectly located close to the Warburton river walk or a few minutes drive to the rainforest galary and Mount Donna Buang itself. Literally at the bottom of the hill is the locally renowned COG cafe where you can hire bikes to explore the Warburton to Lilydale rail trail. Golf and tennis are also within a stones throw.
Please note: Long (700m), fairly steep & windy gravel driveway, safe for all standard vehicles.
While currently require a 2-night minimum stay to maintain COVID-safe cleaning practices, however, you are welcome to inquire for single night stays for mid-week bookings.
Eco-friendly sustainable environment
We aim to maintain the surrounding forest as a haven for wildlife. The property is fully sustainable for water and uses 100% green electricity. We ask that you respect the environment and minimise your footprint.
The property supports permaculture styled local produce growing and there is a small orchard being developed behind the cottage.
The cottage is not suitable for young children as there is an unfenced dam on the property and in wintertime the wood fire is a risk to small fingers. Babies may however be accommodated and a port-a-cot is available on request.
A few home comforts
The cupboards are well stocked with a selection of teas, coffee (& coffee pod machine) and cooking condiments. Milk will be in the fridge for your arrival.
Ample firewood is available to top up the basket should you need it for the wood fire or outside brazier during winter stays.
Picnic basket and rug are ready for you to take on your outings.
Deciding on activities is made easy with information on local attractions, maps, menus, bike hire, tours and event calendar available.
Torches are also on hand for night-time possum or koala spotting or to guide you up the track from a night out in the village.
Please note there is no wifi at the Cottage but generally good reception across mobile carriers for hot spotting.

High up the hill in the trees! Quick drive down the mountain into Warburton.Private and quiet, fantastic couples get away. Summer or winter, just the perfect couples get away!
Spent a few days in this lovely cabin after Labour Day. Cannot recommend it enough. Meeting the property’s alpacas and dogs was definitely a highlight. Warburton town itself is lovely.
Thank you for the wonderful stay! It was the perfect spot for a weekend get away. So peaceful and calm with the sounds of nature all around.
Warburton is a charming town and we particularly enjoyed the walks in the surrounding mountains.
My partner and myself stayed here over the weekend. Oh my how amazing is this place we both so loved it. So relaxing. Perfect little cottage with woodfire spa bath. So peaceful. We will definitely be back
Me and my partner stayed here for our 2 year anniversary and it was lovely to have this wonderful cottage all to ourselves. Really nice cd and dvd selection with a really cozy lounge to enjoy both. Bathtub was a lovely experience but the shower left a little to be desired, overall though a experience I'll look back on fondly for a long time.
WOWWW!!!!! This place is the most relaxing place i have ever been too in my 50yrs of living. I recommend this, if you want peace and quiet, and the luxury of Australia's bush views!!! Simply magical!!!!! Everything in the little cottage is there for you, it made me feel at home. Thank you to the owners... I personally would give more stars if there was an option. 10/10.
I saw deers and rabbits driving up to the cottage. It’s so close to town yet in the middle of nature. So much wildlife around. Cottage maintains a distinctive charm. Must be ok with some spiders though! LOVED sitting on the porch and wandering to the creek in town. Main house is not far away but it is on the blind side of the cottage and Hazel leaves you with complete privacy.

Very Quaint cottage in beautiful peaceful surroundings! Just perfect!
Secluded Clean house with all you need nestled in the hilltops with beautiful views. Minutes drive from Warburton with plenty to do and see. LaLa Falls a must see and good trek. Redwood Forrest is a wow factor and nothing like we have seen before. Take a picnic 🧺 blanket and sit within to take it all in.
Drive to Mt Donna Buang just beautiful as all the drive around Warburton.
The Hotel has great parmigiana selections with friendly kookaburras hovering for left overs.
If you want to get away from the city life, come to Sleepy Wombat Cottage.
This stay has such a potential (e.g. close to Melbourne and nearby town, yet secluded enough among forest), but pity looks a bit neglected. The mosquito mesh door was hanging on a one top hinge only, the sofa cover was stained and need a wash for a long time etc.
These small issues should be easy to address and this can make staying in the cottage more pleasant.
Arriving at the Cottage we felt so invited with the music playing and fire already lit for us.
Very comfy bed and Couch! We loved the spa bath and watching dvds in front of the fire.
The alfresco area was peaceful seeing all the wildlife and smelling the fresh air.
It would be a perfect honeymoon getaway !
We had a great weekend, very private. Location is perfect if your looking for somewhere to get away. Cabin was very clean with welcome music quietly playing. Quality toiletries provided. We were visited by kookaburras in the morning and seen wallabys on the drive up to the cabin. Would love to return and highly recommend it.
Fantastic little place to stay, warm cute and cozy. Close to the centre of town. Terrific spot to explore the area from. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
I truly appreciated the attention to detail of the host, I arrived to music playing and the heater on and a fire set in the fireplace ready for me to light. The cottage was exactly as described with and a true nature escape surrounded by trees in up in the hills. So beautiful!! Thankyou
We had a peaceful and enjoyable stay. Loved the friendly wildlife and view from the veranda.

Just a great place to get away and be in the heart of the bush, yet only minutes from a cute and friendly village - best of both worlds!
