Spruce Spray Cottage is the perfect location to get away from it all, with breathtaking ocean views and privacy both inside & outside. The cottage is located on Spruce Head Island, which is accessible by a causeway linking it to the mainland with Port Clyde, South Thomaston, Rockland and Camden nearby. In the 1900’s, Spruce Head Island was an active quarry island.
Spruce Spray is truly the quintessential Maine cottage. The original section was constructed in 1965 as a summer cottage. Over the years, there have been multiple additions and modifications transforming the cottage into a year-round retreat. Spruce Spray’s main living space is open concept, with plenty of room for a family of 6 to enjoy. It is open, light, and airy, perfect for socializing yet there are several places to get away for quiet reflection. The kitchen is well equipped with all the necessary tools for cooking meals while enjoying the ocean views. There is a large dining table that seats 6, which also provides the perfect location for playing board games or working on a puzzle. The living room has plenty of comfortable seating for all; whether looking out at the ocean, watching TV or enjoying the warmth of the wood burning fireplace. There is a cozy reading nook with telescope to view Seal Island or gaze at the evening stars. The cottage offers three bedrooms and two baths. Two bedrooms are located on the first floor: one with two twin beds and the other with a queen size bed (which overlooks the rear deck and pond). The first-floor bathroom, separates the two bedrooms, and has a shower. The master bedroom is located on the 2nd floor, with a queen-sized bed and a large window seat that looks out onto the ocean. It is the perfect location to read a book or simply enjoy the views. The master bathroom is equipped with a bathtub/shower. As mentioned, we limit guests to 6 people and do not allow pets. Should you require additional space our neighboring cottage, Seal Cottage sleeps 4. (VRBO # 1831893).
Spruce Spray is surrounded by beautiful gardens and large open lawn area. There are two decks offering vastly different experiences. The large oceanfront deck allows one to feel perched over the ocean as though on a boat. From this vantage point, you can watch the lobster boats returning from the sea to their moorings, follow the birds as they glide over the coastline and be on the lookout for the occasional seal visitor. The rear deck is the perfect spot to lounge, curl up with a good book while enjoying the sounds of the trickling waterfall in the small pond. There is also a picnic table and outdoor grill on the lawn area, located right above the rocky coastline.
Your whole vacation could be spent simply relaxing at the cottage. The sandy beach and protected harbor allow for great access to the water for kayaking. Whitehead Island is just 1 mile across the harbor or stay close and explore the coastline around Spruce Head Island. If you prefer to stay on the land, the sandy beach is a great place to search for sea shells and sea glass or explore the rocky coastal edge along the large granite formations.
There is much to do and see nearby! For the most picturesque lobster shack meal, McLoon’s is a must, located within walking distance from Seal Cottage. Birch Point Beach State Park, located 6 miles away, offers breathtaking views of Penobscot Bay from a sandy crescent shaped beach. The perfect location for picnicking, fishing and swimming. Nearby Owls Head State Park and Lighthouse offers a nice walk and Owls Head Transportation Museum is a must see for those who enjoy aviation and antique vehicles. Fifteen minutes away, Rockland is famed for its cultural scene, including Farnsworth Art Museum & Wyeth Center, CMCA (Center for Maine Contemporary Art), The Maine Lighthouse Museum, and The Strand Theater. Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse provides beautiful photo opportunities. There are many fantastic places to dine in the area, from fine dining at the award-winning Primo Restaurant, sushi at Suzuki’s Sushi Bar, Ada's Kitchen, The Causeway Restaurant in St. George..... There is something for everyone. A short drive away, Camden known as the "Jewel of the Coast", is a quintessential Maine town filled with quaint shops, restaurants, and beautiful scenic views. Camden also offers abundant hiking opportunities, including Mt. Battie (also accessible by car), whose summit provides a bird's eye view of the surrounding islands.
