About this property
Escape the City! Plain Outside; Gorgeous Inside; Huge Horse/Cattle Farm
Country living at its best! Quarter mile to other houses, at end of long drive. There are 7 vacation homes on our 600 acre farm, widely spaced. Give the kids a taste of nature. Fish in our ponds, swim in the swimming hole in our creek, hike our roads & woodland trails, pet the horses. Enjoy our Party Patio (with its hot tub). Share with another family, as there is room.
Do not be fooled by the "Plain Jane" exterior. The inside has huge living spaces, and is fabulously tricked out. With four bedrooms and a bonus children's sleeping room, Baldy's can comfortably accommodate 13 people.
Baldy's Retreat is tucked up against the woods on our 600 acre horse and cattle farm. Guests at Baldy's have access to the ponds, Game Barn, woodland trails, horse petting, hiking, bicycles, swimming hole, and the gorgeous scenery of Wolftrap Farm. Out the front door, Baldy's guests have views of horses that will come to the fence for treats, and you may see wild turkeys passing as well. The back deck is well-shaded, and the night noises of frogs and crickets back there are free.
You will also have the option of booking one of our golf carts to use to explore the farm, and to book our Party Patio, with its hot tub, corn hole and other games. (Party Patio must be reserved, 90 minutes per day, first come-first served. Contact the owner to reserve.)
We describe Baldy's as a Retreat because it is almost out of sight and out of earshot of the farm complex. However, a short walk down the drive brings you to additional horse paddocks with friendly horses. Just beyond, you reach the edge of the farm complex, with additional guest cottages, the Manor House, the stables, our Pavilions where we host wedding receptions, the Game Barn, and access to our woodland hiking trails.
Wolftrap Farm is an excellent home base when you want to visit wineries (Barboursville, Horton, Keswick and Hona Lea are within 15 minutes; Early Mountain is within 30). Monticello is a beautiful 30 minute drive away, and Montpelier is just across the little mountains in front of the farm, 15 minutes away. Other historical venues include the Civil War Museum in Gordonsville, James Madison Museum in Orange, Wilderness Battlefield and Michie's Tavern. (Once you book, we will be allowed to tell you how to access the Guest Information Booklet on the Wolftrap Farm website, describing local wineries, historical sites, restaurants, outdoor adventures, and other things to do when you stay at Wolftrap Farm.)

Very quaint property with a very quiet place to stay with you, your family & your friends. Me and my friends had a great time during our stay, very clean & the host was great & obliged our every needs
This house was just perfect for two families with kids. Plenty of room choices for the kids with two nice master bedrooms for the parents. I also loved the two separate hang out spaces and the big open area for the kids to get outside and enjoy the beautiful farm. The host was very easy to reach and very accommodating to our check in times. I also really appreciated that there were little things like paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, hand towels, etc. We truly didn't need to bring anything and felt right at home. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us!
I dont generally leave reviews but we stayed here on the way home from the beach. Was an amazing time even though it was short. The horses were really cool
The property was great. A quiet removal from the hustle and bustle of Charlottesville, but close enough to serve as a basecamp. The property mgmt was very easily reachable and made the trip a breeze.
SPACIOUS AND COZY
There were 2 king size beds, 4 sets of bunk beds, and a very comfy extra large couch.
LOCATION
Beautiful area. Lots of horse and cows within eye sight of the house. Incredible starlight night sky.
Check-in went smooth, kitchen had everything we needed to cook, and the place was clean. Lots of small touches that the host put into providing an amazing experience for us.
Great place! The kids loved it. We had a fire in the fire pit while the kids played. The horses were friendly. Beds were comfortable. The hostess was responsive when the kids locked the door to one of the bedrooms and we couldn’t get in.
I traveled to Baldy's Retreat at Wolf Trap Farms with 9 of my closest girlfriends for my 50th birthday weekend. The farm is absolutely beautiful! Baldy's Retreat was warm and welcoming. Everything was clean and the accommodations were perfect for inside and outside fun. Tina greeted us when we arrived with a lovely smile which made us feel at home. I would definitely book this property again. Thanks for helping to make my birthday weekend awesome!
Property was very clean and spacious. Slightly dated, but did not affect our stay. Few too many wasps near entrance and some obvious nests I felt could be dislodged by maintenance. Understand it is located at woods edge. Horses and surroundings are beautiful. Front storm door slightly stubborn. Please update the WiFi name and code. The one I received in my check in instructions not correct. Figured it out. Would recommend this as a stay. No cushions on back deck furniture, or missed where they were located. My error if so.

Cushions for back deck furniture are now kept in the little shed by the parking spaces.
This is on a nice large farm/ranch. The owner/manager was basically easy to get in touch with and answered my questions beforehand. I think it was really nice about 10 or 15 years ago. It is an older mobile home which is really starting to show it's wear. The main picture that is on the listing is from a long time ago. The porch on the pic is brand new. Now it is older, painted and peeling. The inside was ok but not very clean! There was pet hair all over the bedspread in the one bedroom. There was dirt beside the microwave etc.
In general it was ok but was rather expensive considering all I just listed above!

Wow! For the record, Baldy’s was set up just 5 years ago (in 2017), so 10-15 years ago this spot was a cow pasture. You can trust this offbeat review, or trust the numerous other reviews that make special mention of how clean the house was. Takes all kinds, I suppose.
Lamar brought 8 adults and 7 children, requested and was given early check in, requested and was given permission to have 8-10 additional people come by (more than that showed up), and Lamar still says he “overpaid”?

The accomadations were just perfect for our extended family over Christmas.
It was really cold so we kept the fireplace going which gave a perfect setting for the holidays. The caretaker provided lots of wood, responding every time we needed more. We all enjoyed walks on the farm lanes and feeding the horses.
The only hiccup was the loss of Wi-Fi for a day. While the accommodations description states shared Wi-Fi between the 7 different VRBOs on the property, in truth it is 2 hot-spots to be shared. And if the Wi-Fi unit is at another property it is so far away you won't be able to pick it up. We did have it 8 of the 9 days of our stay. We had a family member in the process of filling out applications so for that reason it was an inconvenience. And since the TV only offers 3 local channels we didn't have NETFLIX entertainment for our 4 toddlers who couldn't spend much time outside due to the cold.
One other problem is that the washer and dryer have to be attended to constantly to finish loads. But since it was right next to the living room it was convenient.

Thank you for the five stars and for highlighting the attention you received from one of our five star employees. Isn’t he great! Welcome to our rural world, without good broadband options. That may be changing for us soon. However, as you know and appreciate, the real attractions of our farm are outdoors.
Our stay was fantastic. Plenty of sleeping area for a large party. The drive was scenic and the farm was beautiful to wake up to. Enjoyed our stay immensely!
Good place for families. The grandchildren enjoyed the horses. Some problems with lighting...chain on dining room fan light missing. Couple of drawers off track in Master Bathroom and Kitchen. Shoe molding and sink in master bath needs to be stained. No pepper in kitchen. Overall nice place for families. My wife (retired Art Teacher) was impressed with the decorating.
We had a group of friends stay here after exploring area wineries for the day. It looks small from the outside but has great space for a large group. Clean and comfortable and within a quick easy drive to many wineries. We didn’t have any opportunity to really explore the property because we only stayed one night but it is a beautiful farm setting.
This was a great place for our family gathering which consisted of a variety of ages. The children loved the fishing pond and the game barn. We all loved the beautiful surroundings and hiking in the woods. We enjoyed the farm animals too of course. Staff were very friendly and helpful!
The property was beautiful! The house is larger inside than it looks on the outside ! Tina the property manager was amazing l She answered all of my questions quickly and helped guide us on things to do . The game barn was really fun! We rented a golf cart for a minimal fee and saw the farm on it ! Fire pit outside was enjoyable too!
My friends group (7) enjoy staying here. This place is very private and you can barely hear anyone else around this place. This has a very great nature view and very calming place. We didn't like the fact that this place has a lot of bugs but it was a farm place so not really matter. We will go back to this place if we are going back to this location. The TV in living room didn't work or we didn't get it to work but we are not there to watch TV. It has very slow internet so you might want to consider it before you make your decision. Otherwise, it was very private and decent place to stay with a lot of people!
Beautiful, peaceful retreat on a cattle/horse farm
This was a wonderful, relaxing retreat into the beautiful, peaceful Virginia countryside. It's remarkable how quiet it is outside, which was a welcomed, calming experience. We took a daytrip to Shenandoah to hike Doyle River Falls and visited Monticello. In between, our kids (4 and 6) absolutely loved walking around the farm, getting to feed the horses carrots and apples. My only concern, which ended up not being an issue, was my kids and how they are sometimes very sensitive to allergens (dogs/cats/pollen/etc). They did great and didn't have any issues. I would very much recommend staying at Baldy's if you are looking for a peaceful retreat and a great home base while touring everything Charlottesville has to offer (ie. wineries/horses/history/etc).
My wife and I live in Virginia Beach, where we have been buying and rehabbing run down properties for many years. In 2003, I was looking for a small 'getaway' property close to the mountains. I overshot and ended up purchasing a rundown old horse farm (584 acres), with three houses and two big barns. After 18 months of rehab work, we opened the houses for guests. Since then, we have converted other buildings on the farm into vacation rentals, and there are now 7 such properties, plus three glamping tents. The farm now hosts over 70 weddings each year, as well as accommodating vacationers year-round.
Why they chose this property
The Charlottesville area is one of the most beautiful parts of America. The landscape is just wonderful. You enjoy all the amenities of civilization, but in an area that is rural and dotted with small towns and villages. There is a reason why Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Governor Barbour, James Monroe and many other historical figures chose to live in this area, and why a number of modern jet setters have hideaways in the area today.
What makes this property unique
The nicest part of Baldy's Retreat is the interior styling of the home. Our interior designer outdid herself in selecting the furnishings. The setting is also very pleasant, with total privacy, peace and quiet. Because Baldy's started life as a modular (sounds better than double-wide), we are able to provide accommodations for a large group at a modest price.
