The Great Dane is the ideal retreat for large families, friend getaways, or bridal parties—and it welcomes your pets too! Perched atop Leatherwood Mountains, this spacious home features double-story wraparound decks with incredible mountain views and plenty of room to gather and relax.

The main floor master suite includes a private bath and access to a screened patio. A fun, kid-friendly loft offers its own lounge space and half bath. Downstairs, three additional bedrooms and a full bath provide comfort and direct access to the lower deck, complete with swings, benches, and ample seating.

This home is located in the 4000 acre, Leatherwood Mountain Resort in Ferguson, NC. Our guests are invited to enjoy our Horseback Riding program where you can experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains pristine wilderness by Horseback (reservation required). You will have access to miles of hiking trails, mountain streams, stocked fishing pond, community swimming pool, play ground and tennis courts, creek tubing (seasonal), on-site restaurant with active live music & event calendar (guest advised to check hours when planning meals).

Leatherwood Mountains has surveillance or recording devices on the property. Our neighborhood is very safe and our property very secluded. For added peace of mind, we have security cameras by the gated entrance and common areas. Individual properties may also have cameras on the EXTERIOR of homes. Please be assured they are not directed at private areas, hot tub porches etc.

Fun Stay

The Great Dane is a great property and a fun place to stay. Our only complaint is that the place had not been well cleaned before our stay. It looked like it had been cleaned a month or so ago and then left to sit. There was a very thick coating of dust on all the surfaces

Perfect Escape

The Great Dane Mountain Lodge provided the absolute perfect getaway for our family. From the moment we walked into the door, we knew it would be a memorable weekend. The owners have thought of everything, from an assortment of toys for our 3 year old son, beautiful coffee bar, adorable amenities for the dog to thoughtful and well designed decor. We sat in the hot tub at night with an unpolluted sky and could see every star. The view from the cabin is beautiful. The property is beyond expectations with miles of hiking trails, and even swings for the kids under the porch. Can't wait to come back for a long weekend in the summer!

Fourth of July Getaway

This is our second time staying at this property. When we visited in December, we loved it so much that we wanted to come back and visit in the summer. We were able to bring our kayaks and spend a morning at Kerr Lake (about 30 minutes away), and we also enjoyed hiking behind the property. We attempted to trail ride, but didn't book soon enough and they were all sold out. We will have to come back and try again. This is such a lovely and thoughtful place, and it's evident that the owners put a lot of work and love into making it better and better.

Perfect Christmas vacation stay

This property is sooo much better than the pictures on the website. The cabin was soo tastefully decorated for Xmas which made our Christmas that much more special as we arrived and put all our gifts under the beautiful tree. No detail was spared. The house was impeccably clean considering it’s dog friendly. No dog hairs or dust balls. I can’t say enough. Oh and the view!!! The sunsets behind the mountains and the view is just perfect. The home is secluded and private so do prepare for a climb up the mountain but it’s so worth it for the privacy and quiet. Thank you leatherwood mountain and the Great Dane for our fabulous Christmas and end of the year!!!

Perfect weekend getaway!

We love visiting the mountains and wanted our family to experience the area as a way to celebrate 3 birthdays! the location was fantastic being within the leatherwood resort - in fact we want to visit when it is a little nicer out to explore more trails and the pool/park & horse back riding. The house was so cute and cozy - wonderfully decorated. THE VIEW - AMAZING. The loft area was well stocked for kids and my boys spent a majority of the time inside up there playing. They also loved running around the deck and playing on the swings. It was a very conducive environment for adult relaxation/fun while keeping the kids entertained! We also found it VERY helpful that this rental was so accomodating of pets. It was clear there is a love for dogs - with dog bowls available and dog treats. This was a wonderful touch. We had a great time laughing, playing games, and making new memories. Can't wait to come back!

Nice big porches to relax and enjoy the view. Very well equipped with extras like K-cups, plenty of towels and medicine in the laundry room.6 of us stayed at the house including my 93 year old father who enjoyed the master bedroom and the amazing furniture built out of tree trunks. We loved the animal themed bedrooms, the hot tub and the swings on the porches.My niece had a lovely wedding at the log cabin and a fun reception in the covered area. We thought the venue was an amazing place to get married. Lots of family and wedding guests stayed at various homes in Leatherwood.Overall we enjoyed Leatherwood and The Great Dane!

We also enjoyed cooking on the grill and eating at the spacious dining table. We also enjoyed playing games and putting puzzles together at the dining table. We took walks within the gated community and it is so beautiful and then we came back to the hot tub to help with our sore muscles. It was a great time and we will definitely be going back. 5 stars all the way.

We absolutely loved the location and amenities!

Loved this property and we look forward to coming back! Only thing missing was an actual grill and scrubbing supplies for pans but other then that it had everything we needed!

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We enjoyed so much of the things at The Great Dane. However - the operation of the TV’s was confusing and difficult to use as the remote function was un familiar to everyone in our group. We missed most of the Olympics during our stay but were able to watch some TV on our last day. More detail instructions on using the remotes is needed. Particularly for the multiple remotes in the great room. One more wish - more waste baskets in the bedrooms...with only two bathrooms we had only three trash cans on the main and lower level.

Will stay again!

First, the house great & the less than 5 star rating NOT fault of property owner. We drove Fl to NC & arrived 5. Called day before & asked for early check in, told no because cleaning people wouldn’t be finished (would have split drive into 2 days). Arrived tired/hungry after 11 hr drive, w/ dog, unloaded ALL stuff and carried in groceries purchased an hour before arrival down the road. Opened fridge, it was dirty. Looked around -trash in the can, dirty dishes in the dishwasher etc. House had not been cleaned!! Called Leatherwood and told “cleaning girl” had been there- we disagreed! Sent property manager up and he immediately saw property was very dirty. We were given a choice- to temporarily move to a diff house for 1-2 nights & then move back to the Great Dane once cleaned, or to drive back down the mountain, go to the check in building/restaurant and wait while cleaners went clean the home. Packed up stuff, back in the car & elected to wait at entrance while they cleaned rather than moving twice. Restaurant closed & we were offered drinks. We were very hungry since hadn’t eaten since breakfast! 2 hours later cabin ready. We have 5 BR home & know large home, especially one that had dogs in it, can’t be THOROUGHLY cleaned in 2 hrs . Kitchen and baths much better with all blatant dirt and mess cleaned up. But floors still dirty & it was still quite dusty. We’re not sure how they washed all the bedding in two hours..? It was well after 8 when we unloaded- ate a bowl of cereal. At daylight we were able to see much better. The porches around house were dirty and the windows were very dirty inside and out. Had to wipe down chairs to sit outside. I know it’s a mountain home and dogs are allowed but don’t think a pass not to clean outside sitting areas and windows. Great parts after a bad start: kitchen very well stocked w/ everything needed, comfortable living room, community beautiful, house met needs. Enjoyed sitting on the porch looking at view. Leaves beautiful! Again not owners fault: Took “hour” trail ride- left at 10:10 and back 10:50. Horses walked along main road through property only. Very disappointing since woods and trails look beautiful. Property mng promised to make it right - refunded cleaning fee only. Thought a night should have been compensated” as we lost entire evening in house and very inconvenienced after long drive. Loved Leatherwood despite bad start!! And house met needs very well.

Perfect Mountain House

The house is even better in person! Great views, cute living room, and plenty of space for everyone. Hot tub worked great. The wrap around porches were the best part.
