A short drive through rolling hills and forests of eucalyptus down to the coast brings travellers to charming Tavira (15km), on the banks of the meandering River Gilao and home to gracious riverside mansions and an impressive 11km island beach. Further afield, a visit taking in the charms of Faro’s old quarter replete with time worn cobbled streets, pretty squares and an array of tempting eateries for all tastes and pockets, is a must.
