About a holiday in Devoran and Point...
Point is a small settlement about 4 miles south of Truro, in the parish of Feock. Situated on a small promontory where the Penpol Creek joins Restronguet Creek, Point, like many places in Cornwall, experienced a brief economic flourishing during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Restronguet Creek, which is a kind of inland tidal lake fed by the Carrick Roads, was an important industrial waterway during the tin and copper mining boom, capable of accomodating large ships. The Redruth and Chacewater Railway shuttled busily backwards and forwards from the Gwennap mines to Devoran, and by the 1840s wharves has been built all along the creek from Devoran to Point, along with boatyards, repair shops and housing for the workers. Although the locomotives went no further than Devoran, horses hauled the trains onwards to Point Quay, where there was a smelting works.
Today, Restronguet Creek is recognised for its beauty and wildlife and Point is a sleepy residential village, fronted by the river.
Devoran is a peaceful village located four miles south of Truro where the Carnon River meets Restronguet Creek. The village and former ecclesiastical parish, now part of the civil parish of Feock, is named after the Cornish word for water, 'Dowr'. This quaint waterside village offers a small selection of local pubs, restaurants, shops, a supermarket and a café for all of your amenities.
The nearby Chasewater railway forms part of the coast-to-coast Bissoe Trail, a footpath and cycle route, giving easy access to Cornwall's areas of outstanding natural beauty. A short drive to Trelissick Garden, a tranquil National Trust garden on the Fal River with a superb collection of tender and exotic plants, makes for a lovely day excursion. For beach lovers & water enthusiasts, you're spoilt for choice with numerous lovely beaches within a short drive, not to mention Loe beach which is walkable along Restronguet Creek.
For those looking for a bite to eat or some retail therapy, the nearby city of Truro offers a host of restaurants, bars and shops. Truro Cathedral, built in 1880's, dominates the skyline and is well worth a visit.
