Great Spot for a Family Vacation!

Our family really enjoyed our stay at Fun in the Sun. From the private beach to multiple pool options, we loved it all. The house was very comfortable and accommodated our family perfectly. We really enjoyed the multiple deck levels and the pool and hot tub. Great location within an easy walk to shops, restaurants, recreation center and beach. Loved it! Thank you Mark for hosting us.

Fun at Fun in the Sun!

The property was great. Plenty of room, nice furnishings, comfortable beds, and a very nice kitchen that was stocked well. We enjoyed the pool very much, and the walk to the beach was quick. The only issue I had was that the glass tables were not wiped down very well, and the counter behind the kitchen table was very dusty. Everything else was great. The owner is very kind and full of information about the area and we listened to his suggestions for dining out and were happy with those choices. We had a very enjoyable week at Fun in the Sun!

Fun at Fun in the Sun!

Our family had a very good time at Fun in the Sun. There were just a couple of items that might be fixed. Some uneven areas on top porch floor, mold in a couple of the bathrooms and the kitchen floor needs some work. But over all things were very good.

Dad's 80th birthday reunion

Our very large family loved everything about this large clean well maintained home. The 8 bedrooms were very spacious and each had it's own bathroom. There were nice extras like 2 ice machines, 3 refridgerators, fully carpeted, TV's in the rooms with DVD players, plenty of deck space with lots of chairs...I could go on and on. This was perfect. The location couldn't be any better. Walking distance to the beach, community center and to town with lots of stores, etc. We would definitely stay there again! The price is very fair! The rental place right down the street was great for bikes and kayaks. Bike paths are everywhere, definitely plenty to do even on rainy days.

House is beautiful, & the kitchen is absolutely stocked with things you wouldn't even think of. You definitely wouldn't need to pack anything unless you have favorites of your own. The house has 2 high chairs (1 sits on a chair, the other attaches to the counter), a playpen, multiples of some kitchen household items. We didn't have any issue with the beds or the house. Mark is wonderful & will answer any/all your questions you may have before & during your stay. You can walk to the beach if you wanted or you can park closer at a designated area. We loved our stay & would absolutely do it again! Thank you Mark!! 😁🏖

Best Vacation Ever

My family has been vacationing at the Outer Banks for at least a decade. We've stayed in multiple houses and, while each house has its unique features and charms, Fun in the Sun is by far the best property I've encountered. The house is exceptional, featuring many amenities and a prime location. Fun in the Sun is located in the Schooner Ridge neighborhood of Duck. That means that you are in the heart of Duck and a short bike ride or walk to the beach, the sound, shops, restaurants and the boardwalk. In addition, Schooner Ridge offers multiple amenities including an oceanfront outdoor pool and a community center with a gym, indoor and outdoor pool. The house itself is magnificent. Decks for days, a pool and hot tub, 8 incredible bedrooms, a wonderful kitchen and living area on the top floor plus a spacious living area on the bottom floor. In addition, the owner is incredibly gracious, ensuring that your visit meets/ exceeds your expectations. I took this trip with family and friends following a year of significant transitions and this was just what I needed. My guests were all equally impressed. I'm looking forward to staying at Fun in the Sun again. It was an incredible experience. Can't say enough good things. Thank you Mark!

Fun in The Sun is Perfect

If your looking for a place that has it all. Stop looking. Fun In The Sun is perfect. It has everything you need and more. It's a great place to gather with friends and family as it has plenty of space, tons of bathrooms ,pool, hot tub, TV, games and Wi-fi. They have thought of everything! The kitchen is s fully stocked with plenty of pots and pans for whatever you want to cook. Plus they offered two free standing ice maker,s which was awesome! We had plenty of ice for drinks and coolers and we weren't filling ice trays! The location is perfect in Duck as well. It is walking distance to restaurants, boutique shopping ,sports rentals and the duck town park. I loved riding my bike in the neighborhood and adjacent trails. The Schooner ridge amenities contribute to make this a well deserved five star rating with a ocean side pool, showers, and full recreation center which offers a indoor pool,game room and tennis courts. Our family had a great time and we definitely will be back. Mark was great to work with and we look forward to our return.

Hi Mark & Kathy,Unfortunately my wife and I had to cut our terrific vacation one day short and leave on Friday night, 8/24 one day early. After the craziness of packing our things up I'm not certain anyone in our family remembered to sign your guest book during the week while we were vacationing in your lovely home from 8/18 to 8/25/07. “Fun in the Sun” was perfect for us. Your homes has it all… it was quiet, clean, only a very short walk to the beach; it’s so close to the community center and the walk down Schooner Ridge drive leaves you right in the heart of Duck proper. You have most accommodating accommodations, it seems like you thought of nearly everything. Your pool, hot tub, “super” decks and Tiki bar were wonderful, and that screened-in porch on the third floor was our late-night refuge. The sea breeze and the night stars were so incredibly relaxing that I thought about just sleeping there (the wife wouldn't have it, though). I have always booked our family vacation homes in Whalehead Beach, Corolla or Ocean Sands. Never again!!! We are now tried and true Duck converts. With a little luck we hope to get the family back together again next year for some more “Fun in the Sun”. Thank you so much for everything. Best Regards, Ryan and Candice Smith

Fun in the Sun Schooner Ridge

My large family, 11 adults and 7 children thoroughly enjoyed ourselves during our stay at Fun in the Sun!!! There is absolutely ample space with 8 bedrooms and 8 1/2 baths, with each room having it's own private bath. The short walk to the beach was very convenient and family members came and went as they pleased. This home has a pool and hot tub which were a huge hit with the kids and some of the adults. We took advantage of the sand volleyball court on a couple nights while there with 12 or 13 of us playing. Even attracted one of the neighbors children while playing. Some of the adults and all the kids also enjoyed the basketball hoop on the large driveway Duck is a wonderful vacation town with many places to eat and stores to shop, all within walking distance of Fun in the Sun. I think my car moved twice during our week long stay. Mark and Kathy, the owners, are beyond excellent hosts. Mark and was hands on with support. We spoke several times via text or by phone over the course of the week. He was sincere with wanting to know if we needed anything and answering any questions we had. If all hosts were this concerned not only about their property, but about their guests, your vacations would be more fun than they are. Can't say enough good things about our hosts. When we have need for such a large house on the Outer Banks again, Mark and Kathy with Fun in the Sun, will be our first call.

Great spot in Duck

What a great property in Duck, a short walk or bike ride to the beach or town, with a great volleyball court, pool and massive deck! The pictures don’t do this property justice, upgraded TVs, new super comfortable beds and never ending amenities! Mark was excellent, with quick and very useful information about Duck and the property. This property and its owners truly are great!

Really enjoyed staying here. House is huge with plenty of room for everyone. The location was great, convenient to the beach & town.

Perfect for large family

Fun In The Sun property was perfect for our large family vacation. The neighborhood was extremely quiet with the community center and beach access within walking distance. There were plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for all. We spent every evening on the decks or in the screened porch while the kids enjoyed the swimming pool and hot tub. The kitchen was beautiful and extremely complete (even a crockpot)! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

I've had an amazing time staying at this house. We were close to the beach and we had easy access to different shops and restaurants. The house was clean when we got there too. Nothing was broken or disfuncational. I will definitely come again.

Outstanding Property!

“Fun in the Sun” is just an outstanding property – sooo much comfort, sooo many amenities (two ice makers, 3 refrigerators, 2 dishwashers a hot tub, a pool come to mind). I love how the multi-level floor plan comfortably accommodates sleeping arrangements for all of the extended family while the spacious upper floor provides a great common space with kitchen, dining room, screened-in porch, massive deck and large screen TV viewing area all seamlessly flowing for great family time! Located in the heart of Duck, Schooners Ridge offers a terrific beach as well as community fitness center, tennis courts, and indoor pool and easy access to all that Duck has to offer (Restaurants, Shopping, Market, etc). A special note about Fun in the Sun – BLAZING FAST WIFI/INTERNET ACCESS! This is key for teenagers and adults alike and has been an issue for us at other properties (even in paradise, sometimes you need to check in on things at the home or in the office..). Highly Recommend this OBX Jewel!

Return Visits

Family and friends keep coming back since 2009. Each year we have seen improvements. New refrigerators. New ice makers. New TV's. Then one year, a new kitchen! Set up your "camp" at the beach in the morning. Come back for lunch. Leave your stuff down there as Schooner Ridge is neighborhood access only. Back in the afternoon for more beach and happy hour. So close to downtown Duck you'll feel bad about driving. Take advantage of the boardwalk on the sound and the shops along side. Back at the house, the new kitchen is great for crowds to cook in and eat. We eat at home every night and at the very least its 10 of us. Plus its stocked with every utensil possible not to mention the pots, pans, plates and silverware. Oh and two dishwashers. A word about the owners. They called to check in as we've been return visitors. I mentioned the hammock on the lower of two big decks was a little weary looking. The next day a new one was in its place. Its things like this that keep us coming back to our Summer vacation home.

Great house, location and vacation!

We've been coming back to this house for 9 years straight nowadays it could be better. With all the space (8 rooms) everyone has a place to sleep. They have this great top deck that towers over the other houses and you can even see the ocean from it! 10/10 would recomend this house to anyone.

Best family vacation yet, and for years to come!

The family and I spent a week of unbelievable comfort, Fun in the Sun is like a little bit of paradise. Our days were spent with the big decision of should we take the 2 minute walk to the pristine ocean beach? or sip cool drinks in the relaxing private comfort of Fun in the Sun's pool? The sunset BBQs, the smell of the ocean breeze, and so much space as to know your children are there, but you don't have to hear them if you don't want to.The private outdoor hot tub, the beautiful wrap around decks, the clean spacious bedrooms and baths, definite home run for any fan of all the comforts, for all your senses. I was floating in the pool listening to The Shark (102.5 FM) on the outdoor system, while the wife and my daughters took the short walk past the tennis courts and indoor pool to shop at all the great little shops on the boardwalk right out of the community. Happy hour at the Tiki Bar by the pool were the perfect way to end a beach day. The two Weber grills downstairs were perfect for grilling for a large crowd. At night we sometimes went to the boardwalk to sip drinks and listen to the music and stop for ice cream .Than back to Fun in the Sun to get everyone, put on our flip flops, and walk to the ocean and watch the stars and moon reflect on the breaking surf.We will be back again and again

We’re Lt Col Mark & Kathy Schmidt. Mark is a retired F-16C Fighter Pilot and USAF Lt Colonel. We live in Midlothian, VA, just outside of Richmond, and have been blessed with three grown sons and a daughter. Our entire family has a deep love for the Outer Banks—it’s been our go-to vacation destination for years.

We designed our beach home, Fun in the Sun, with family in mind. With its spacious layout, it easily accommodates our large extended family, giving everyone room to relax, reconnect, and enjoy all the activities that make OBX so special. Whether it’s long beach days, evening boardwalk strolls, or just relaxing under the stars, we love every moment—and we’re excited to share that experience with our guests.

With nearly 3,800 sq. ft. of interior space and over 3,000 sq. ft. of expansive party decks and a screened porch, this home truly has it all. It’s just a short walk to the beach and even closer to the community center. A leisurely stroll down Schooner Ridge Drive brings you right into the heart of Duck, where you’ll find charming shops, great restaurants, the Town of Duck park, and the scenic sound-side boardwalk.
