Neglected and dirty
First, we need to say that Marc the property manager and all of the various staff and helpers were fantastic and easy to work with. We'll be very happy to rent a place with them again.
But the house itself... unfortunately, we don't have many good things to say about it. It was clearly, once upon a time, a beautiful house. But it has suffered from many years of neglect, with very little time or money being spent for upkeep and maintenance.
The house is grimy. The ceiling fans are covered in dust. Several of the bedrooms and bathrooms stink of mold and mildew. The furniture is old and dirty and uncomfortable.
So many things in the house are broken. Doors and windows that don't open. Windows with rotting sills. Broken door and window stops so they won't stay open in the breeze. Sinks and toilets leak. The toilet seats are all old and gross and need to be replaced. The toilet in the guest bathroom leaks all over the floor.
Half of the back yard is unusable, including the area that's supposed to be the outdoor bar and kitchen. Old toys and pool floats are piled up in an old crib there. The bar refrigerator hasn't worked in a long time.
The master bathroom smells awful. Part of the problem is sewer gas coming from a drain in the floor, and part of the problem is the very smelly toilet and toilet seat. It was so bad, you couldn't be in there unless you had all the windows open. We were constantly trying to camouflage the smell with some shower spray. One of the sinks leaks onto the floor. The shower head and fixtures are rusted out and need to be replaced.
The kitchen in this house is beyond saving. The cabinets all have water damage and are falling apart. The insides of the cabinets, including the rarely-used dishes, are disgustingly dirty. The dishes and silverware seem to be mostly made of random junk that people just dumped there. The pots and pans are old, burned, and dented. The stove works... sort of... but it's old and gross. The few knives are very cheap and very dull. The refrigerators leak onto the floor, so we were constantly having to mop. The small appliances seem to be the cheapest, crappiest appliances available. The coffee maker is very gross, and the toaster is broken. We were able to prepare food, but it was not a pleasant experience.
It's a shame, really. It's quite sad to see this once-beautiful property in this condition. But years of neglect have taken their toll. It's going to take a lot of work to make it nice again.
