B&B: Royal Orchid Suite mins from Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy peaceful Big Island Hawaii in a Contemporary Hawaiian Bed & Breakfast set in a Tropical Rainforest directly outside Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The custom designed & built Craftsman Cottage style home features artisan beds with fine linens, private baths, cozy fireplaces and a tropical breakfast.

We are nestled in a native Hawaiian rain forest in Mauna Loa Estates with giant ferns and Ohia trees in the storybook arts community of Volcano Village.

The Royal Orchid Suite is named for the wild orchids you will see growing both in our rainforest and in the nearby Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The Suite is a private large master suite situated away from the main part of the house, with views of the native fern rainforest. The room features a handcrafted rattan King bed with elegant tropical bedding, and a gas fireplace. For a thoroughly romantic and relaxing evening, the Royal Orchid Suite room has a Jacuzzi style tub. French doors lead to an outdoor deck where you can sit and enjoy the fragrant smell of wild forest ginger or exotic tuberoses, or just take in views of the magical rainforest. A collection of Hawaiian botanical prints and original artwork delight and soothe the spirit.

Lava Pond Lodge Bed & Breakfast is located in the storybook village of Volcano Hawai'i, a community of artists, writers and scientists. We are secluded in the forest yet just 5 minutes from the entrance of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park with its spectacular hiking trails, scenic vistas and lava viewing. Volcano is 27 miles from the Hilo airport and 96 miles from Kailua- Kona.​

The cottage felt like home! When I walked in and saw the fireplace, high ceilings, lit up Christmas tree, wooden floors, I instantly felt warm and secure! I was traveling alone on the Big Island and was a bit nervous but this home truly made me feel calm and serene! My room (the Orchid room, with King size bed) was truly heavenly! The heated bed was so comfortable! The bathroom was beautiful. Everything was perfect. The innkeeper made my everything even better! She was kind, loving, friendly, and went above and beyond. The breakfasts every morning were my favorite part! It truly felt like my home. I didn’t want to leave. The hot tub was amazing and perfectly hot. The only downside was that the bathroom tub took a very long time to fill with hot water as the water kept coming out cold and I’d have to turn it off and wait a couple minutes. I had to turn it off and wait for a total of 5 times or more I think. That was a bummer because I booked the room for the bathtub. But overall I would definitely come back here!!!

A great stay near the national park

We loved our bed and breakfast stay in Volcano. It was a great location for a quick five minute drive into the park and located in between Hilo and South Point.The room was comfortable. The breakfasts were yummy. Everything was very clean. We loved that flashlights were provided to make it easier to explore the park after dark.The property was full of beautiful plants and in a very quiet neighborhood that was great to take walks through to see all of their wonderful plants.We highly recommend this to stay at!

Wonderfully welcoming

Bed and Breakfast large home in a lush tropical setting. Sarah had everything to accommodate, including delicious breakfast choices. The neighborhood is just ten minutes from Volcano National Park. Perfect for exploring the park then resting in a cozy environment. The hot tub is nice. So many details, including welcome cookies.

Volcano Stay

We enjoyed our stay here at Volcano. The B&B was secluded but near enough to get to Volcano National Park within minutes. Rhonda was a great host, very friendly and shared about all the places to see with comments and reviews on what to do. The breakfast was very good and more than we expected- egg omelette, pastries, toast, muffins. She even had decaf coffee and “Hawaian fruit butters. If we go back to the Big Island we would stay here again.

At Home in Hawaii

Charming place in an excellent location. Was served a wonderful breakfast every morning and chatted like I was back at home. Room had a fireplace, a jacuzzi tub, and a bed warmer! So cozy! Also had a refrigerator and microwave to store and eat a quick lunch one day. Easy to come and go, especially from Volcanoes National Park. Absolutely LOVED my stay. Want to come back with the whole family!

Volcano Vacation

We really enjoyed our stay in the Royal Orchid Suite. It had everything you need. It was more spacious than expected. The breakfast was delightful with other guests and our host was especially nice with good conversations. We learned to love papaya.

What a fantastic stay. Our suite was very comfortable. They add nice little touches like cookies and snacks always available. The breakfast each morning was delicious. I would highly recommend this place and plan on coming back. It’s a great location to check out the southern part of the island, Hilo, and volcano NP.

Big island vacation

Our trip to the Big Island was to visit family and celebrate my mom’s 91’st bday. The B&B was perfect for us which was approximately 3 miles from my mom’s house in Volcano. Girl Trip to the Rainforest

More than PERFECT!!

Had to pinch myself to believe this place was real!! Beautiful property!! We felt relaxed and so welcomed. Sarah and her mother-in-law (Rhonda) are the most amazing hosts. Hubby and I stayed in the Royal Orchid Suite. The king bed was very comfortable. Even had dual warmers if you were feeling cold. The bathroom was huge with a jacuzzi tub. Breakfast was delicious. We made breakfast sandwiches one morning and omelettes the next morning. We really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub. This home is situated in the rainforest. It was so quiet and peaceful sitting outside. Definitely more of a couples retreat. Sarah was excellent in communicating information with us. She offered suggestions and gave us advice. The Volcano National Park is only 3 miles away. Close location makes it easy to go in and out of the park without spending hours driving. You will feel like royalty here!!!

Excellent stay!

Great place near Volcano! The room was very nice, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast was a special treat with the papaya, Apple bananas and yogurt and the pastries and egg dish. We were super close to the park for seeing the eruption and doing some great hikes! Rhonda was a delight, very informative and helpful and made a nice breakfast. Sure was good at communicating. We loved our stay.

A Different Side of Hawai'i

Our hosts Sarah and Rhonda were wonderful, the property is beautiful, well-maintained and very welcoming. Parking was never a problem. Every morning, they had a great breakfast consisting of a tropical fruit medley, a nice selection of breakfast breads and a featured hot dish to start your day. In addition to the refrigerator in our room, was a central refrigerator with water, juice and ice that was also big enough to store any leftovers that might not fit in our room refrigerator. There was always a basket filled with bags of chips and packaged cookies in addition to a plate of big, soft cookies. Our room was spacious, had a fireplace that warmed the room at night when it got chilly outside, and a nice little outdoor area to sit and enjoy the backyard which was full of beautiful tropical growth. The bathroom was spacious as well and was stocked with all of the necessary soaps, shampoos, etc. At night you could hear the tree frogs chirping. The only issue was with the hot tub in the bathroom, which was a major reason for booking this particular room. As it was later explained to us, the hot water came from a different source separate from the sink and shower, so in order to fill up the hot tub, you had to run the water, wait for it to get hot - which it did for a short period - turn it off, wait, and then repeat the process over and over. This was very time-consuming and resulted in cool water at best, and also the hot tub jets wouldn't work. This was a big disappointment.

Perfect Stay

My husband and I stayed here for a few days while visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and absolutely loved our stay. The space was very welcoming, clean and comfortable. The bed was comfortable and even had a dual sided heated mattress pad which was very nice. The breakfast was delicious and perfectly filling for our day out exploring the area. Rhonda, our host, was very nice and we really enjoyed getting to chat with her in the mornings.

Lovely B&B in Perfect Location

We really enjoyed our stay in the Royal Orchid Suite. It’s a lovely B&B in a perfect location close to Volcano National Park. The fresh breakfast and Hawaiian music each morning was a nice treat. We really enjoyed chatting with the other guests and sharing our various adventures from the previous day. Our host, Sarah was very knowledgeable about the area and offered several helpful tips. Our room had everything we needed, mini fridge, microwave, fireplace, jacuzzi tub.

A rain forest paradise

My wife and I stayed here while visiting Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and it was our first experience at a B&B. The host made a wonderful breakfast and her place is a gem that is only minutes from HVNP. The host also gave us great recommendations for the area and the park as well.

We enjoyed staying at this beautiful B & B near volcanoes national park. The property manager was traveling but left the home in good hands with Rhonda answering our many questions and filling us in on local sights. Breakfast was hearty and kept us going all day.

All the comforts of home

Great location to visit Volcanos National Park. Breakfast each morning was amazing. Lots of activities to do in that area. Only thing missing is the sunshine but you're in the rain forest. Lots of vegetation and birds.

We purchased the Lava Pond Lodge in early January 2021 and we are extremely excited for what this endeavor has instore for us. We are leaving the property for the most part unchanged and only making minor updates here and there. Why change a good thing if it is working, right?

During these uncertain times we are very COVID minded and echo the messaging on the Big Island. We are going to great lengths to keep our 'ohana safe and are Covid Compliant. As our guests you are a part of our ohana (family) and we want you to be comfortable and safe when you visit us.

Our goal is to continue to build onto the great reputation that the Lava Pond Lodge is known and adored for. Warm and friendly hosts, breath taking surrounds and convenient location to nearby sites. We are also looking at becoming closer with community and culture as we establish and grow our ohana on the Big Island. We support local businesses and will always give back where we can when we can.

While the biggest attraction to the area is certainly Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park there are also many other reasons to visit this area of the big island. The rainforest makes this a very unique area. ​Visit the Volcano Art Center Gallery and catch a live hula performance. Witness the magic of authentic native Hawaiian dance and storytelling. Choose a class from their schedule of creative arts workshops, writing, Hawaiian culture & nature workshops for all ages.

We suggest wine tasting at the Volcano Winery, a trip to Rainbow Falls, a 80” tall waterfall, exploring the Kaumana Caves, enjoy the amazing views of the ocean and valley from Waipi'o lookout or hiking on Mauna Kea. One of our favorite weekend activities is seeing the Sea Turtles at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach which is a 38 minute drive from the lodge. Hilo also offers helicopter rides to view the beauty of the Island from above. I highly recommend the once-in-a-lifetime open door helicopter adventure.
