We rented this cottage on Dauphin Island for a week in March. Even with our limited mobility, the experience was excellent all around. The owner lives nearby and was very responsive. The house is an older property; It appears to be like something from the 1920s or 1930s. Nevertheless, the utilities function well and the place was renovated and clean when we arrived. The front entrance is 3 steps with no railing, but we could hang onto the window post. We brought our own portable toilet arm rests which adapted very well.
The location is truly central in terms of Dauphin Island, located three blocks from the central business area of the island, which includes several convenience stores, automobile service stations and good seafood restaurants (car needed for Islander and Pirates), which is about all there is for "Downtown" Dauphin. It is a peaceful and quiet setting with very little traffic. Natural areas, Audubon and Indian Shell Mound, are good strolling and full of birders. The fort has the best gift shop.
We were honored to have the oldest native-born islander and his wife move into the Whale House next door while their place is being rebuilt this spring.
