This was a great place to stay in Acadia. We had five grown people in our group and we fit completely comfortably in the house. Everything was clean and well stocked; we did not want for anything. The grounds are so well maintained and great fun to hang out in. With a cheerful fire and some cold drinks, hanging out on the patio apres-hike is a perfect summer vacation activity. It's close to the Travelling Lobster and Island Takeout as well. The host is perfectly communicative and had a wonderful welcome package waiting for us. Stay here if you can!!

Acadia but coat list vacation

Beautiful vacation home. Had an extremely well stocked kitchen and lovely outdoor deck. The bedrooms were very spacious and comfortable. We all enjoyed our stay. It was an easy spot to explore Mount Desert Island from. I would highly recommend this rental. Jean had everything set up for us and was easy to communicate with.

My adult family enjoyed our week-long stay at Moss Mountain Cottage. It was very clean and comfortable in a convenient, yet private location. Beautiful, thoroughly maintained backyard, with a deck and also a fire pit with chairs. Good communication. Jean responded quickly to messages and stopped by for yard maintenance

Peaceful Place

Nice quiet spot tucked away in the privacy of a wooded lot. The landscaping and fire pit add to the relaxing atmosphere. Owners were very responsive and left a wonderful welcome gift. Easy check-in / check-out. Short drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia. Enjoyed our stay.

Wonderful cottage in a peaceful setting

Our grouped loved this property, and we would most definitely stay here again if our travels bring us back to the area. Quiet, well-equipped and very comfortable. All of the previous praises are well-deserved.

Convenient to Acadia, quiet, and oh-so-clean

This was a magnificent VRBO. My kids remarked when we finished out trip that, "I think this was the nicest VRBO we've ever stayed in!" It was the perfect size for our family of 4 + in-laws. The kitchen was well-equipped and had all the basic staples we needed for our week. The beds were comfy and the rooms were large. We especially enjoyed the patio and secluded setting to relax after our days hiking in Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is also close. Make sure you stop by the Travelin' Lobster for lunch if you are at the cabin during the day! It's very close, very delicious, economically priced, and very popular.

Lovely cottage on MDI

We had a wonderful stay at Moss Mountain Cottage. The property was clean and exactly as described. The beds were comfortable, the cottage was spacious, and it had air conditioning! We appreciated that it was quiet and secluded off the road in a beautiful wooded area. The location was great for exploring the island - easy to get to Bar Harbor, to hiking in Acadia and to the "quiet side" of the island. A bonus is that it is minutes away from our favorite lobster pound, The Travelin Lobster.

Everything you need

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we booked this property last minute without too much research, but it was perfect for what we needed. We traveled with a 1 year old, a 3 year old and 3 adults. There is a bedroom with two beds and a pack and play which was perfect for the kids. It was easy to get to and check in, and there was everything there you might need to cooking, clean-up, and they even left us some toys to play with for the kids. They also left us some cute gifts and a note which was appreciated, and plenty of information.

Wonderful cottage

Moss Cottage exceeded our expectations in every way. It was clean, well-appointed, organized and very private. The outside deck and garden/patio were lovely and we enjoyed watching the local wildlife - like the snowshoe rabbit munching on Jean's garden. The location was very convenient and encouraged us to explore the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island. Jean was a great host and made us feel so welcome! I would encourage anyone to stay at Moss Cottage.

Moss Mountain Cottage Gem

We were so lucky to have chosen this cottage for our week long stay in Maine. It's very clean, quiet and we felt very safe staying here during times of COVID. The owners were very thoughtful to provide such a well stocked home for their guests. The king bed was very comfortable and there were nice towels for the bath. Jean provided great communication during our stay. We highly recommend Moss Mountain Cottage for your Maine vacation.

Comfort like home in private setting.

The beds are comfortable and kitchen is well stocked with cookware and pantry items which makes it easy to cook and eat meals at home, which was our preference during Covid. Backyard is quiet with we enjoyed making a fire and watching the stars. It seems like everything on MDI is an easy drive from Moss Mountain Cottage! We explored hiking trails and beaches during the day.

Family Getaway

Moss Mountain Cottage was the perfect place to stay for our baby daughter’s first trip to Maine with the family. Jean contacted us a week before the trip to make sure we had what we needed to check in smoothly. The cottage was clean with plenty of room for our party (she even had a pack’n play set up for our daughter when we got there). We had breakfast on the deck, and we had a nice fire in the evening. It was nice to be close enough to the trails and some local restaurants, but far away enough from the traffic and business of downtown. There was everything we needed at the house. Jean was very easy to contact and prompt in responding. My husband and I have been to Bar Harbor previously and have stayed at other homes, but this is one of our favorites and we would gladly stay there again.

Picture perfect cottage

Moss Mountain Cottage was the perfect vacation rental for our family. It’s location, Town Hill, was only a short drive to all of our favorite places on the island. The cottage was impeccably clean and well equipped. The addition of a fire pit in a beautifully landscaped garden was enjoyed by all. A huge thank you to Jean and Bill for inviting us into their picture perfect cottage!

THE best rental yet!

The entire experience with our stay was excellent! Jean was the most communicative and responsive host we have encountered. She went out of her way to make sure we were prepared for our trip and helped us find kayak rentals before we arrived, gave us great suggestions for eating and activities, and even made sure we knew how to work the A/C before the hot weather arrived. The cottage was spotless and had everything we could have possibly needed for our stay. We appreciated being away from the crowds, but only a short drive to Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor. Even with some challenging weather, it made for a very comfortable week and we would eagerly return or recommend to friends and family. Thank you, Jean and Bill - we hope to see you again!

A beautiful place for a quiet calm thanksgiving

This is, in short, the perfect place for a quiet weekend on the island. The location is lovely and secluded, but central to all of what MDI has. My friends and I are hikers and we were able to access with short drives all of the best trailheads. In mornings, and on thanksgiving before feasting, we walked to a delightful preserve just down the road. Jean is a wonderful, kind, and caring host and the house was spotless, well cleaned (to avoid COVID), and we’ll set up to welcome us after a bit of a harrowing drive through the snow. I can not recommend enough - and the price is just a cherry on top! Thank you

Beautiful Property

Jean- thank you for renting us your cottage. It was so beautiful! The beds were comfortable and the cottage was so relaxing to stay. You were extremely attentive to all of my questions about the area and with giving me recommendations on where to go. The welcome basket was beautiful and the homemade jam is so tasty! Moss Mountain Cottage is extremely homey and I would 100% rent again if I make it up to Maine in the future.

Wonderful stay away spot during quarantine

The house feels a lot bigger than how it looks from website. It’s beautiful and well stocked and has everything we need. The bedroom is spacious and comfortable. we really enjoyed our stay. The owner Jean is so kind, she goes out of the way to make sure the house is in the best condition and her guests are comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a safe, clean, friendly place to stay in Acadia.

I built Moss Mountain Cottage in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives with her family in Southern California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lovely granddaughters.
As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading they were sure - to their fame and fortune. The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that inspired me to name our guest house 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'

Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college - a very long time ago - and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, garden, volunteer, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful and very quiet carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer.
When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home and I can't wait to share it with you!

I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Moss Mountain Cottage sits on 5 acres and features a large deck with a Weber grill and outdoor seating/dining for 8 guests and the patio gardens off the back deck include a fire pit and seating, also for 8. Both the deck and patio are quiet places to relax and hear the chatter of frogs in the bog; morning songbirds or nighttime owls; be greeted by visiting deer and rabbits as they try to sneak a snack from my flower gardens; take in the beauty of a full moon or on a clear night, the sky bursting with stars as far as the eye can see. All this to ensure you a peaceful and restful vacation on MDI.
