We arrived in the evening of our check in date. The keys were where they were supposed to be and followed the instructions to find the condo. Once inside, we discovered that the beds were not made (still had the last travelers used bedding on them), and there were dirty towels and trash in the bathroom. I messaged the host with no immediate response. I called the number provided by VRBO, and the message said the host was not receiving phone calls at this time. I called VRBO for help. They tried to get ahold of the host, first with the initial agent, then, with a management agent. They both said they couldn't get ahold of him either. So, we searched the condo and found clean bedding in the dryer, closet and dressers, and remade the beds ourselves. That was after being on the phone with VRBO for an hour and half. I received a message from the host the next morning apologizing. He said, "There was a miscommunication, and I truly hope you'll allow us the chance to make it right." The cleaners showed up and cleaned the apartment. Two days before checkout, I messaged the host asking if he would consider giving us a partial refund, or a free night on our current stay (7 days), or something since the condo wasn't clean when we arrived. I heard nothing until after we checked out. Then, he did not offer anything on the current stay but offered us a special discount for us or our friends on a future stay. Why would I stay again after finding it dirty the first time? Make it right? Nope.
