Krausand Island on the Elbe – Altes Land: Krausand covers approximately 24 square kilometers and has about 450 residents. It is connected to the mainland by two bridges. A magnificent 3-kilometer-long sandy beach with many reed beds and willow trees invites you to swim, sunbathe, walk on the mudflats, and hike. The Elbe island is characterized by its many pastures and fruit farms—especially the cherry blossoms in the Altes Land. Nature reserves and a diverse bird life make nature lovers’ hearts beat faster. The hiking trails lead past old thatched-roof houses, horse and cattle pastures, wetlands, large fruit farms, and old harbor facilities. There are beautiful paths everywhere: The Elbe Cycle Route is a delight for every cyclist; the dike is perfect for hiking; and the beautiful beach and mudflat areas are second to none. From the island, you can easily watch the bustling ship traffic on the Elbe.
