Groot Constantia was founded in 1685 and given to the first governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, as an experimental farm for agricultural products, who developed viticulture here and made Constantia wine world-famous. In 1925, the Cape Dutch manor house burnt down completely. After being rebuilt, it now houses a museum that provides an insight into the lives of the first Cape settlers.
