Beautiful beyond words

We had a wonderful stay here! Host was very responsive and helped us get where we needed to go as a mud slide took out rail and road. The apartment itself is pretty average but has everything you need. What you're really staying for is the view!! This was the best view we had the whole trip and took our breath away every day! However, would highly recommend a car. We decided not to bit climbing that hill with out luggage (or even without) was TOUGH! It pretty far from town and straight uphill. Totally worth it for that view but still added a bit of a challenge. Overall would highly recommend!!

Dump with a million view!

The view from the apartment terrace onto the lake is breath-taking and very beautiful – but unfortunately the apartment was not! We were very disappointed when we arrived: • Dirty - all rooms of the apartment were dirty and mattresses, pillows, bed linings and towels had a very bad and old smell. According to the local caretaker, the apartment has not been used for a long time ...and obviously, nobody had cared to open the windows and to prepare for our arrival. So we had to spend almost the entire first day to change and wash things to make the place somehow usable. The next day the local caretaker sent a cleaner who freshened the place up. • No pool - the advertised pool was closed. According to the owner this is due to the Covid pandemic, but neighbours told us that it is simply broken. The owner then wrote us that we could use a small public beach down by the lake. This meant 10 minutes drive plus 10 minutes search for a car parking space. It is outrageous that the owner even considered this as a compensation as opposed give us a refund! • No garage – the advertised car parking garage was full of old dirty furniture and rubble - no chance to park a car in there! The owner blamed others for these failures (the pandemic for the closure of the pool and Fe-Wo-direct/VRBO for not updating their website) but all this is in her responsibility! ...choose at your own risk!

Varenna with amazing Mountain View’s.

Amazing views with a beautiful huge patio. Comfortable beds... worth the trip! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here:) However, it could use some sprucing up including larger towels.

Dump with a million dollar view

The property was dirty when we checked in. The property manager came and cleaned for 15 minutes or so. The towels were hand towels for your body which clearly did not work out. They were also rough, worn, and stained. There was no soap in the bathroom which is a hygiene issue for me. The bed quilts were filthy underneath with questionable stains. The freezer was broken, gate latch was broken, and shutters were broken. I didn’t sleep well at all. I was uncomfortable in the property so I spent all of my time out exploring the lakes away from the property. It was essentially an uncomfortable crash pad. The owner said something about a gas leak getting repaired and you could still smell gas the whole trip by the car parking area. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more to stay closer to town. It’s really a trek to make every day without a car.

Die Lage der Wohnung ist traumhaft, bei schönem Wetter kann man auch zu Viert entspannt seinen Urlaub verbringen. Die Wohnung selbst ist sehr klein. Schade, dass sehr wenig Geschirr und Besteck vorhanden ist. Vieles war zusammen gewürfelt oder durch Plastikbecher und Pappteller ergänzt. Eine kleine Investition würde die Qualität bereits sehr aufwerten.

Beautiful view and nice location

Varenna is the perfect place for exploring the Lake Como. We were three friends visiting this area to cycle for 4 days, and the apartment was perfect for our stay (maybe exept for the 2 km hill we had to do from the ferry and back every day). We could relax in the front yard with a nice view over the lake or take a bath in the common pool. We did not have any noisy neighbours during our stay, it was quiet and relaxing. The only drawback was that we had a very warm week with extremely high temperature (unnormally high, 40 degC at day and 27 degC at night) and that led to warm nights when there was no aircondition in the apartment. There was to fans there, which helped us to sleep. We would love to come back to stay here.

Magnificent Lake Como View

This property is in a nice, quiet location up above the town of Varenna. It was a very relaxing place to spend the last days of our vacation in Italy. It’s a hike to town, but after the Amalfi Coast we were up to the task of ascending/descending hills. The ample parking was a nice change compared to our other Italy rentals (we never lost sleep in fear of a bus side swiping our rental car!), and there is plenty of parking to be found in town, always lots of room at the train station for a nominal charge. We were very pleased to discover that this apartment is situated in the end unit of the complex, so you get a huge ground floor patio, vastly superior to the numerous rental units that had only tiny balconies, in addition to beautiful views from 2 sides. This was a bonus considering the listing didn’t really highlight this as a unique feature in the area. The apartment was comfortable and spacious for my family of four, and the grocery store just a few hairpins above had most of what we needed for supplies (better bread and fresh pasta can be found in Varenna). Could use some attention to amenities like towels, dishcloth/sponges that were extremely well used, wrecked iron/ironing board, burnt out light bulbs... You will put up with the freezer door being duct-taped on, a garden in need of tending/weeding, all because of the view— It’s simply breathtaking!

The view from the terrace is priceless.

I've never been to Italy before & chose the Lake Como area as our home base. The apartment had all the basics and that is all we required. There were a few minor things: a clogged shower drain which caused water to drain slowly & the sofa bed was too uncomfortable to sleep - a bar in the middle of the bed was higher than the head and foot of bed - Fortunately, there were two fold up twin beds and an additional couch for our party of five which sufficed. A few of the side lamps in the kitchen didn't work - burned out bulbs? The apartment is in an excellent location perched just above Varenna & just a couple minutes drive from Varenna's train station. We will be back someday & hope that we will be able to stay here again.

The views of the lake at this apartment are as good as most anywhere on the lake-truly beautiful! Enjoying the outdoor patio was the best part of our stay! The apartment was clean though a little sparse. It would benefit from a little decorating and warmth. The walk up and down the hill was a bit strenuous. We enjoyed it and the pool to cool off after the walk but if you are taking many bags up, you would likely want a car or taxi as the property is up quite a hill-adds to the views though!

Delightful apartment, WORLD CLASS VIEW!!!

We spent 6 days at this lovely little apartment perched on the hillside between Varenna and Perledo. The views are what sold me on choosing this apartment, and boy, they did NOT disappoint! We pinched ourselves each morning we awoke and looked out over the sparkling blue of Lago di Como and the stunning mountains surrounding us. Sunset was our favorite time of day, we made sure to be home and seated on our terrace each night to soak in that incredible experience with a bottle of the local Nebbiola wine. We felt like we were on top of the world. The apartment itself is simple yet functional. Not fancy, but pleasant, clean and comfortable. And very quiet, being up on the side of the mountain. The walk down to town along the Sentiero del Viandante cobblestone trail is not for the weak or elderly, it is quite challenging and steep in places. We chose the longer route along the road several times and it proved much less treacherous. We never attempted the walk up to the apartment as either the trail or the road would be a steep climb, so we just made good friends with one of the taxi drivers in town and called her for rides up the hill (10euros) each time. Well worth it! And as there are no markets nearby the apartment, all purchases have to be carried in, so the taxi was the only choice for us. We absolutely loved our stay at this lovely apartment and would return again. Varenna now owns a little piece of my heart, and this apartment is a big reason why! Grazie mille!

All about the view

Situated in the hills above the town of Varenna the views from the large private garden are amazing. The walk up from the town takes about 35 minutes, perhaps less for the younger generation. There is small supermarket further up the hill about a ten minute walk. Plenty of restaurants to choose from in Varena which also has good bus, train and ferry services. More attention to detail regarding cleaning (particularly the odor of cigarettes) would definitely move this apartment into the 5 star plus category.

Hidden paradise

The accommodation was spacious, comfortable, clean and very quiet We packed a lot in to our 5 day break; The 20 minute walk to Varenna castello is well worth a visit. We discovered a small 'Aladdin's cave' pottery shop there, with beautiful usual pieces. Also went on other hikes in the area, one being a 3 hour hike from the apartment in the Valassina mountain range. Got the bus back after rewarding ourselves with a delicious lunch in an agriturismo in Ortanella Esino Laria. Took it easy the next day, sunbathing in the garden looking across the lake at the snow capped Alps ..quite surreal! Sorry we didn't have longer time to stay..next time for sure Definitely recommend a holiday here Ruth and Simon

Wonderful long weekend

Great apartment, excellent reception from host and superb views. Easy access to ski slopes , both at Bobbio and Madesimo made for a wonderful long weekend skiing in the alps.Look forward to going again soon! Richard

Sono stata 3 giorni per festeggiare capodanno con il mio fidanzato, il nostro cane e 4 nostri amici. La casa molto bella, pulita e con tutto il necessario per il soggiorno, una vista bellissima dalla vetrata del soggiorno, la comodità del posteggio privato e del box e tutto ad un ottimo prezzo.

beautiful outdoor spaces!

Pretty basic inside, but clean...gorgeous view, nice outside garden area and nice community pool on site. Was told it was a 10 min walk uphill from train station...more like 25 mins along streets that do not have a shoulder in many areas.

Beautiful view - a week stay in Varenna with a family of four

The view from this property is spectacular and it deserves five stars. It is on a corner lot so in addition to the views it is a very private and tranquil unit. The unit is exactly as described; no surprises there. However, when we checked into our unit at 4:00 p.m. the place had not been cleaned. There were still dirty sheets on the beds and dirty towels in the bathroom. I was able to get in contact with the manager of the property who arrived within 30 minutes with bedding and a few towels. Initially, she have us four towels (we are a family of four) and I had to beg her for four additional towels. She changed the beds but never cleaned the unit. I had to call her about an hour later because the shower was not draining. She was there within an hour and plunged the drain. Communication with owner: The owner always answered my questions prior to our arrival. However, I contacted her three times via email to ask if we could get another fan in the unit. It was hot during our stay and there was only one fan in the unit. I never heard back from the owner; however, the manager also asked permission to obtain a fan and five days later we had another fan. If you are staying at this property, you really need a car. The walk is beautiful but steep. When it rains, the cobblestones are very, very slippery. There are some wonderful restaurants in Varenna. Our favorites are Cavatappi and Ristorante Varenna Monamour. This could be a five-star property if it was professionally managed and cleaned.

Good value.

The property was really something. Great view, decently stocked kitchen and nice comfy bed. We found that it was necessary to take a taxi to the room from the train as the uphill was quite steep. Very nice location to unwind and enjoy.

Lovely place to stay in Varenna

We enjoyed our time In this apartment situated above the town. The views are as pictured and there is a large outdoor patio to sit out and enjoy them. The owner's agent made sure we had everything we needed and answered any questions. We had a car which made it easy to get around (the apartment is a 5 minute drive from the train station on winding roads) and parking at the Apartment was easy (not necessarily true in other areas of this town). There is a grocery less than a km up the hill, and we parked at the train station when we wanted to take a ferry or go into town. There is a good information center right at the train station. The apartment had everything we needed to cook some meals which we enjoy doing while traveling. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Hello I'm Carmel married to Paul owners of Casa Caterina. We are Irish and live in N Ireland with our 4 children. I am employed part time in Healthcare, working with disability. My husband Paul runs his own transport company which imports Italian goods, mainly tiles, to Ireland and the UK . This is the main reason we came about owning a property here as we travelled to Milan on business quite a lot.

We first discovered this area 15 years ago with our young family when we decided to take a break from our usual 2 week child orientated camping holiday and headed Como direction. We knew a little about the Como area but were not prepared for the sheer magnitude and beauty of the place. Maybe it is the mountains, the lake, the climate or a combination of all 3 but the general atmosphere seemed to nourish and revitalise the soul instantly.
That summer holiday was the best ever holiday with the hiking, the touring and the children having endless fun jumping from a platform into the lake.
When we decided to buy out holiday apartment we knew we wanted it to be in the Varenna/Perledo location but had to wait almost 8 years to find a place that captured the magic of the area. Casa Caterina is that spot!
I choose our apartment because its situation give the best views of lake Como and because of its large private garden. I love the outdoor life and spend endless hours gardening with the back drop of the mountains and lake, gaining inspiration from visiting the magnificent Italian villas nearby.
There is so much to do close to the property. We spend a lot of our time now hiking in the local area regularly going to Bellano, an hours trek away, have lunch and return by train or bus.The property is a great base to explore the wider Como area also. A popular destination by ferry is Menaggio, and Bellagio is situated on the famous golden triangle area of the lake just a 15 minute crossing away. It is always lovely, however, to return home again just to relax on our patio enjoying the beautiful Italian wines and delicious simplicity of the local food.
The options are endless.

This is a hikers paradise and we spend a lot of our time now discovering the area, walking along the various paths to the local mountain villagers. Sentiero della Viandante (path of the wander) goes right past our apartment complex.
Staying in this area is like going back in time, old Italian tradition remain intact, yet in one hours drive you can reach Milan the world capital of fashion and general sophistication
