Check in was delayed since the door combo didn't work. Was able to contact the host and get it resolved within 20 minutes. Very nice "surf shack" steps from the ocean. The huge sand mound was a challenge daily to get to/from the beach, but I understand needing to protect the houses from storms. The bedrooms were very nice for all my family. The house was decorated in a vintage nautical/ surfing theme. The W/D was a welcome amenity. 1 full star added for the awesome Ice maker which was loved by all. MIL said baseboards were dirty and had not been cleaned. There was also a bad bug problem that I noticed particularly at night. Overall it was a nice near-oceanfront property that gave our family a good week.

Thank you for the thorough review. Check in delayed? Well that s a bit picky, since we answered the call immediately and got you right in. But ok. The sand mound over the walkway is a battle we have with mother nature. Our community is working on a solution to that. Hopefully we can get it fixed soon.I will tell my cleaning people about the baseboards, I was not aware of that. The bugs are new for us. We've never had a problem but we have had our pest people working diligently on that issue. I hate bugs too and want them gone asap. We are sorry about that. Glad that you liked the cottage for the most part. It is a small casual beach box and is intended to be very laid back. Hope you have a nice rest of your summer. Sincerely, Gen

Overall we would not stay at this house again. There were some positives and negatives. The house accommodated our three families well. The kitchen was very well stocked, but the pots and pans are very old/gross. We picked the house based off the location, and enjoyed being able to easily walk to the beach. We would recommend the public beach access right by the house instead of the private because it is an easier walk. We were disappointed in the upkeep of the house. There are towel bars falling off, rust in the dish washer, sand in the wash machine, and something black all around the base of the shower. Our biggest frustration was that the listing said nothing about how linens are not provided. So we arrived in the late evening and had no towels or sheets. The host was helpful in getting them for us, but it made for a challenging start to our trip.

I’m so sorry you were dissatisfified with our cottage. As you can see from most every other guest review in the 14 years of sharing our cottage, we are very unaccustomed to unhappy guests. We endeavor to provide a relaxing and informal surfing/fishing cottage, but being on the ocean, it is impossible NOT to have a little sand and a little rust. It is customary that OBX cottage rentals are without sheets and towels. That is why the “Sheets provided” box on our listing was NOT checked, and the lease clearly states that this cottage is NOT equipped with “Sheets and Towels”. (number 4 on lease) In an attempt to satisfy you,  we arranged for, delivered and PAID for sheets and towels within 12 hours, on the 4th of July. We hope that on your next visit to the OBX, you have a more enjoyable experience elsewhere.  Sincerely, The Goodwin's

Great cottage

Pictures were accurate - what a great cottage. We loved everything about it, but our favorite extra was the ice maker!! We will definitely be back!!

Charming cottage, perfect location!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this charming cottage with plenty of space to spread out. The easy beach access was perfect to come and go with our two-year-old. The lifeguarded beach was ideal, and the proximity to other sites kept us busy!

Loved the Surf Shack Cottage

Our family loved the Surf Shack cottage! The house is decorated with lots of great surf/beachy accessories. The location was perfect for us, only steps to the ocean and close to all the restaurants and places we like to visit at OBX. Also, the house has all the amenities you would want for a relaxing vacation.

OBX beach vacay

We all loved our week at Surf Shack 6. The decks are amazing and it is so close to the beach. The house itself was bigger than what we anticipated from the pictures. This was by far the most well stocked property we have ever rented.

Beach Vacay

This home was much more spacious than what the pictures show. The deck space is incredible and the home was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. All 8 of us had a great time in the house and on the beach just outside.

A beach dream

What a delight it was to stay at this property. I was on the beach in 30 seconds in my bare feet. The house was roomy and provided a fabulous view from the crows nest.. The decor was charming and the location was perfect! It was my first time in the OBX and I can't wait to go back. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
