Great little gem

Loved staying at this place in the Osa Peninsula. It was great to be fully immersed in Costa Rica and the jungle; as you have animals all around you. Beach was a short walk from the house. Would recommend this spot to anyone else looking at staying in Costa Rica.

Great Jungle Experience

We enjoyed our stay at this jungle property. The house was well-equipped and clean. You are definitely in the jungle and wildlife viewing was great. Walking on the beach with macaws soaring and monkeys in the trees was definitely a one of a kind experience.

So much fun!

We loved staying at this house! It gave us a great chance to connect with nature and unplug for a while. It was amazing to see the different types of monkeys, birds, flowers, and other critters just outside the house and the beach was a short/beautiful walk away. Lots of stuff to do if you like being outside!

Simply wonderful

This is such a wonderful spot and was everything we hoped it would be and more. The location is beautiful, and sounds and sights around you are incredible and force you to slow down and just take it all in. To live in a space so open to the nature surrounding you (including geckos climbing the walls and crabs looking to hide in the bedroom!) is an experience none of us in the family will soon forget. I already miss watching macaws fly overhead while lazing in the hammock and waking (early!) to birdsong and howling monkeys. As well, John was super about answering questions and offering help, and Oscar's thoughtfulness made the whole experience even richer. Thanks John for sharing your little piece of paradise with others (and thanks for the pool - what a difference it makes!!!). We all hope to return again soon.

Everything we hoped for and more

We hoped that Sombrero Y Camisas was going to be as good as the reviews and it was! If you love wildlife and serenity this is your place. We felt like we were in the Garden of Eden. The owner John has created a real private paradise. It is hard to put this place in words. You are among troops of monkeys, macaws, hummingbirds, etc. etc. We travel quite a bit and have been to different parts of Costa Rica. This, by far, was our favorite. If you're looking traditional luxury, this is not your place. If you're looking for a treat of a lifetime and luxury of a different kind, this IS it. We had all we needed and the beds were comfy. John, his caretaker Oscar, and all the local people could not have been more kind. This won't be our last trip there. PS - the pool was the cherry on top!

Wonderful Jungle Property

We had a great stay in this beautiful property. As described, it is like a tree-house in the jungle--the walls are open, we had hummingbirds darting in and out. I thought the heat and noise of the jungle might be too much, but actually was very lulling, and felt great to go to sleep and wake up with the sun and the sounds of all the birds, monkeys, insects and more. The kitchen is very well-equipped. We arranged for a local cook to prepare meals several evenings with food we purchased at the grocery store in town, and she did a great job. The showers are outdoors, which again is great as long as you are comfortable being one with nature. The caretaker who lives on-site did a great job of helping us with any questions and arranging tours at our request. We enjoyed surf lessons, kayaking in the mangroves, horseback riding on a deserted beach, and an amazing day seeing so many animals at Corcovado National Park. We also just enjoyed swimming at the beautiful beach right on the property, and cooling off at the pool. The wifi worked great, which made my teenager happy, but even better was family time enjoying the gentle surf, amazing stars, and unbelievable wildlife.

AMAZING!!

This open air house was just what we all needed! We were fortunate to have a rental car to go to all the surrounding beaches, waterfalls, and tours. Although, there were plenty of restaurants and beaches within walking distance. We enjoyed exploring it all! We arranged a wonderful night hike with Oscar and my kids loved riding in the back of his pickup truck. My youngest hit it off with Oscar’s son and they played tag and ping pong at Martina’s Restaurant right next door. The pool was always refreshing and our morning wake up calls were an absolute delight! We witnessed Howler and Spider monkeys daily, usually multiple times a day. Scarlet Macaws, Parrots, Black Hawks, and several other beautiful birds were with us throughout our week stay! Every day was a new adventure! We enjoyed being further away from the city so we could soak up all the amazing sounds from the ocean waves to the jungle! We will definitely return to this paradise!Go ahead and do yourself a favor and book!

At home in the jungle

Our party of six (four adults, two high school-age kids) stayed happily at Finca Sombrero y Camisas for three nights in mid April (toward the end of dry season). We would have stayed longer if our schedules permitted. The big draw of Osa is wildlife, and we found that we didn't have to go looking - it came to us in many forms: all four monkey species, a sloth, macaws, parrots, parakeets, kites, hummers, and many other birds, iguanas, basilisks, an armadillo that seemed even more surprised to see us than we him, a wooly opossum, more crabs than could possibly be enumerated, and much more. The beach is just a stone's throw away - it's not really a swimming beach, but it is a short walk to good swimming. The pool is small but perfect for a quick cooling dip. We cooked our own meals mostly, but a good restaurant is next door and Oscar the caretaker can arrange groceries as well as transport and guided outings. The feel and facilities are rustic but functional. The surroundings make them luxurious. If you can handle heat and humidity, and 4:30 am monkey choruses, you will have a fine experience. If not, you might want to investigate a different part of the country.

An experience...

This is an experience that you likely haven't had before...You are in an open-air home with only curtains between you and nature. Lots of room, one inside toilet upstairs. You'll share the house with crabs, lizards, spiders, and more. You'll hear howler monkeys and macaws at 5 AM and the cicadas at night, but surprisingly, not as loud as we expected. If you are there for a thunderstorm, it is amazing with the rain pounding down around you, while you stay nice and dry inside. Unfortunately, we didn't see anything other than hummingbirds, a coati, and lizards at the house. When we walked up the dirt road, we were able to see howler monkeys and white-faced monkeys, but we had hoped they would be on site. We did follow the sounds of a group of macaws while on site to an almond tree where they were feasting. The pool is refreshing as it was hot - 93 most days. The beach is rocky and not for sunbathing or easy to get down to. Surfing a 20 minute walk down the road at the official beach looked great - really long runs, but still rocky, so not a typical beach. Oscar was amazing. Arranged a night hike for us and we saw spider monkeys, tarantulas, cockroaches, snakes, frogs, scorpions, and more. Martina's, the restaurant, is good. You won't want to leave once you are at the house. It takes 30 minutes to get from town down a VERY rocky and bumpy road. With a large 4-wheel drive, we blew out a tire and saw others experience the same fate. Thanks, Oscar and John for everything!

Jungle living

Deep in the heart of the Gulfo Dulce in the sweet little village of Matapalo. This place is glamping at it's finest, with an awesome camp kitchen and a pool. We saw macaws and spider monkeys EVERY DAY! Even a spider monkey with her baby coming to eat from the trees right next to the house. We also saw agouti, anteater, armadillo, hummingbirds, and many beautiful small birds drinking nectar from the gardens. There's an awesome expat bar and restaurant in very close walking distance, Martina's that serves food and drinks, and the beach Pan Dulce is a short walk or drive with awesome resorts nearby where you can go for food or drinks. Oscar, the caretaker who lives onsite, hooked us up with a last minute trip into Corcovado. Oscar is incredibly caring and we felt so safe and cared for! The teens had a bit of a challenge dealing with the heat and lack of privacy, but they pulled through and had a life changing experience on the Osa Penninsula! Thank you so much for the experience! Highly recommended.

Magical Pura Vida

What a rainfroest treasure! We wanted to be immersed in nature, away from crowds yet still connected to local culture. Finca de Sombreros y Camisas exceeded our imagination! The open air design surrounded us with a lush green jungle canopy and a symphony of spider monkeys, toucans, coati, iguanas, cicadas, macaws and a resounding howler monkey baritone. The cool fresh water dipping pool was a perfect refresh from the humidity. The well-manicured grounds and pathway to the beach provided a sweet saunter to the rocky tides. The house was clean, well appointed and Oscar helped us settle into the space easily. It was the perfect balance of living authentically with the basic comforts of home. Best Christmas getaway ever!

Et super sted med en masse dyr, det var lidt svært at gennemskue hvor mange man kunne sove der. Og der er ikke meget privat liv da der ikke er dører til værelserne. Så man skal kende hinanden.

Amazing Place!

This place is amazing. The sights and sounds of the jungle are everywhere, especially at morning and dusk. Wow. The sundown cicadas are LOUD too! I should say that staying at this place is an adventure...and one we'd gladly do again. I was a bit nervous of the bugs but they weren't that bad. The pool really is refreshing on the hot days. The water, which I believe comes from the river, is actually cooler than the ocean. The ocean is bath water but with big waves. We enjoyed playing in them a lot. Oscar is great. His daughter is occasionally available if your Spanish isn't too good. He arranged a short (1.5hr) night hike with a guide friend of his (William) in the Corcavado (we had our 8yr old so couldn't go for a 4 hr one, although I would have). That was great, we saw some small snakes, scorpians, the largest cockroach I've ever seen (4"), frogs, etc. It was great. I told William I wanted to see a sloth and the next day, Oscar came and grabbed us and told us William was looking at one and Oscar took us out to him. So we got to see a mother and baby up in a tree. Thanks William and Oscar. We arranged with Oscar's aunt, Maria, to cook breakfast and dinner for us and that may have been the best part. She made great simple dishes, fresh tortillas daily, fresh squeezed juices, and even did the dishes. She was great! My day consisted of getting up about 5am and walking down the road early. You can see all 4 species of monkey just walking down the road (south), as well as all kinds of other things, birds, sloths, etc. Get back for breakfast at 7am. Then off on whatever adventure we did during the day, beach, etc. Get back about 3:30, hang out by the pool with binoculars and watch the macaws and parrots fly over and monkeys come right up to you almost, then dinner at 5pm. We played some cards in the dark and were in bed by 8pm. It is DARK by 8pm. Do over the next day. Such a great adventure.

Paradise Found!

Everything was just delightful for this family of adventurers! For those wondering if this is the place for you, here’s a few things to consider. Getting here is a journey down a long, bumpy road far from a store or ATM. There are no windows or walls. Hummingbirds will fly through the house during the day. Crabs and spiders will come in during the night. You will be awakened to howler monkeys and screaming macaws before the sun comes up. You will sleep under the stars, listening to the sounds of waves crashing. You will put your food in a locked cabinet so monkeys don’t steal it. You will take cold showers, and you will be drenched in sweat most of your stay. You will watch spider monkeys play in trees as you swim in the surprisingly refreshing pool. We loved every minute, but this definitely isn’t for everyone. We’ve already planned out return to this little slice of heaven! Just come prepared to be open to new experiences, and expect the unexpected!

Amazing jungle house!

The house is submerged in the jungle with lots of wildlife around you. I’ve stayed in this house a few times but this was my boyfriends first. He loved it as much as I do. John has done a lot of upgrades since I’ve been and it’s pretty magical. I always hate to say too many good things about it because I don’t want it always booked up. Lol. If you like wildlife, this is your place. John, thanks for another great stay! Kris and Jay

Recommend!

We loved it! ..and wish we were able to stay more days! We saw so many critters 😊, this includes monkeys, bugs, birds (I won't mention snakes) ant eaters, frogs, and animals I don't know the names of. We are an adventurous family from Alaska. We were a group of six and there was plenty of room for all of us. We appreciate the remoteness and the wild....and the warmth ☀️🌴. The host and caretaker were so helpful. The information on VRBO said no internet, but they did have it when we were there.....they under promised and over delivered any many ways. 😊 Hoping that someday we can return! Thank you John for opening your house for people to be able to experience the jungle so close. You have our recommendation!👍🏼

Sleep in the heart of Osa.

We just returned from a beautiful stay at this property. Quiet and beautiful, you are submerged in the jungle at this home. We saw howlers and spider monkeys every day and so many varieties of bird. We especially enjoyed a frog we called "Frank" at night (you will understand when you get here.) and the two green iguanas sunning themselves high in the trees. The pool is especially nice to cool of and was enjoyable any time of day. The path to the beach is beautiful, with exotic flowers and plants. The beach is wonderful, with amazing sunsets in the morning. Oscar the caretaker and his family were there if we needed them and meeting his family enhanced our vacation. Everything was clean and as expected for the reasonable rate. Everything in Cabo Matapolo (nice beaches, surfing) is easily accessible by walking or driving a very, very short distance. Martina's Restaurant is walkable, but we never heard it from the house. The dinner there is delicious every night. We hiked to the waterfall, drove out to Carate (beautiful!) and took a boat tour from Puerto Jimenez to Sirena into the heart of they Corcovado where we were fortunate enough to see a puma. If you like nature and feeling like you are part of something bigger, you will love your stay here. It is really a magical place.

Best Place EVER!

It was one of the saddest days ever... when we left this amazing jungle retreat! Waking up to the howler monkeys and Scarlet Macaws, having spider monkeys frolic all day in trees feet away, exotic birds walking around the yard like we weren’t even there, cooling off in the pool after relaxing on the beach... relaxing on the couch while immersed in our favorite books. We miss all of it. Carolina greeted us upon arrival. She may only be nine years old, but her English is better than most Americans. She showed us all we needed to know and walked us down the path to the beach. She is brilliant and adorable and we miss her too! She had her family showed up the next day with a large jug of coconut milk that we quickly put to use in the fully equipped kitchen. Beds and pillows both were comfortable! This open-air home was the first for us and I can’t tell you how much we appreciated being an integral part of this jungle adventure. My suggestion to you is - book it now! I promise you won’t ever forget this amazing experience!

Imagen de perfil del propietario o de la propietaria
I have been traveling in Latin America since my teens, starting in Baja California, all the way to the tip of South America. Found this special place in the early 90's, and made it my 2nd home.

Por qué escogió este alojamiento

Surf brought me here. But when I bought it I had already spent some time, and gotten to know the area. The wildlife, the beach, the community of Ticos and international community, and the step out of time, all are part of why I am here. And did i mention the
MONKEYS?

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial

We are on the beach, and in the jungle. Caretaker and his family are also a BIG plus- convenient access to town and amenities, without renting a car or driving. As well as transportation, we offer a guide, cook, coordination of tours, and other services to make your vacation the best!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
We are near the tip of the Osa Peninsula, 10+ miles south of Puerto Jimenez, on Hiway 245, a gravel road.
Puerto Jimenez is a 45 minute plane flight from San Jose, on either Nature Air or SANSA.
Taxis can take you from town to our property, or you can drive, with a rental car.
We are closed during the heavy rainy season, October.
When you cross a new bridge, about 10 miles south of town, you will see Ojo del Mar Lodge on the left, and we are the next driveway, with our sign at the entrance- Finca Sombrero y Camisas. Across the road is Escuela Carbonera. If you get to Buena Esperanza Bar you have gone a little too far.
We can also arrange to pick you up in town, and take you shopping before coming out to the property.

PLUS:
Check out our new rental on the property: La Joya, on the beach, with a view of the waves and Golfo Dulce / Pacific Ocean.
Great for a smaller group, or add to the amount of people in the main house to accommodate a large group.
