One of those rare places that's even better in person.
Welcome to "St. Cecilia by the Sea", a beautifully restored former church overlooking Purcells Cove, just 15 minutes from downtown Halifax.
Our guests have described St. Cecilia as magical, a treasure, a sanctuary, and the best VRBO they've ever stayed in.

A little church with a lot of stories
St. Cecilia was once a Catholic church. Today it is a warm, comfortable two-bedroom home filled with the character of its past.
Soaring ceilings, spectacular stained glass, beautiful oak woodwork and original architectural details remain throughout the building. They share the space with art, antiques and unusual treasures we've collected over the years.
Guests tell us they continue discovering new details throughout their stay.
The result isn't a museum or a themed vacation rental.
It's a home with a soul.
Extraordinary — but wonderfully comfortable
One of the things we're proudest of is how often guests tell us that St. Cecilia is not only one of the most unique places they've stayed, but also one of the most comfortable.
The Great Room is the heart of the church — a dramatic but welcoming space for reading, relaxing, sharing a bottle of wine or settling in for a movie on a rainy Nova Scotia evening.
There are two bedrooms, each with a queen bed and quality linens.
The primary bedroom occupies what was once the church choir loft and includes a walk-in closet and private half bath. The second is an open loft bedroom reached by the spiral staircase from the Great Room.
The fully equipped kitchen has everything you'll need to feel at home, including cookware, dishes, wine glasses, coffee maker and even a lobster pot.
You'll also have a full bathroom, washer and dryer, high-speed internet, heating and air conditioning, and a large-screen TV with popular streaming services.
And we clean St. Cecilia to exceptionally high standards — something our guests mention again and again.
Your own place by the sea
Then there is Purcells Cove.
Step onto the deck in the morning with your coffee and watch the cove come to life. Sailboats and fishing boats move through the water below, and the southern exposure lets you enjoy the changing light throughout the day.
In the evening, pour a glass of wine, settle into an Adirondack chair and watch the boats come home.
It's quiet. It's peaceful.
And it's remarkably close to the city.
The best of Halifax and coastal Nova Scotia
St. Cecilia feels tucked away, but downtown Halifax and the Halifax waterfront are only about 15 minutes away.
Beautiful walking and hiking trails are nearby, including Shaw Wilderness Park. York Redoubt National Historic Site — with spectacular views over Halifax Harbour — is only minutes away.
Crystal Crescent Beach is approximately 20 minutes away, while groceries, pharmacy, NSLC and other everyday necessities are about five minutes from the house.
That makes St. Cecilia an ideal home base for exploring Halifax, Peggy's Cove, the South Shore and beyond — and a pretty wonderful place to come home to at the end of the day.

Overall excellent location near downtown Halifax and other sites of interest. Hosts very friendly and although living next door, were never a bother and always ready to answer any questions or provide assistance. Would stay again if the area.

Everything was perfect about this stay. The church was lovingly restored and uniquely decorated, providing endless fascination to discover. The space was great to hang out in, but the surroundings are gorgeous as well.

This is a beautiful and practical place to stay. The building is stunning, very thoughtfully and uniquely decorated. Comfortable beds, great kitchen, laundry too. Very clean. Close to Halifax and there are some wonderful trails nearby too.

I could not recommend this location enough. Hosts were gracious, location is peaceful but close to downtown Halifax, St. Cecilia itself was gorgeous and cozy for the rainy days we were there. I'd be happy to stay here again.

The location is gorgeous and the atmosphere unique! Kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms are super comfortable, well equipped and made us feel right at home.

Best VRBO ever! This was the most unique place we’ve ever stayed and it was also incredibly clean and comfortable! Lara was so sweet and very accommodating! We LOVED our stay here ands wish we’d planned to spend more time. We drove the south shore and out to Digby as well! Highly recommend!!

Very unique place in a quiet cove by the sea
This place is a real treasure, we stayed 3 nights and was convenient for touring Halifax. The owners are great people and made sure our stay was enjoyable.

Best VRBO we have stayed at.
Great location, wonderful hosts, very interesting old church remodelled and full of interesting things. Would stay here again in a second.

This unique and beautiful place deserves all the 5-star plaudits it receives from the lucky guests that have stayed here. I can only echo all those reviews. The tasteful curation of each element in the renovation. The East coast warmth of Lara in meeting me to detail the history. The peaceful and scenic location yet only 10-15min from downtown. The cleanliness and comfort throughout. It was a perfect send off for my last Christmas in Halifax!!

We bought this old church in Purcells Cove in 2005, and Brett set to work restoring it.
Something unexpected happened along the way. While working on the church, Brett found himself inspired to write songs in a way that he hadn't been for several years. Perhaps St. Cecilia — the patron saint of musicians — was speaking to him!
Those songs became a recording project called 'St. Cecilia Soul', and the church ultimately inspired something else: Brett transformed it into a recording studio.
For many years, St. Cecilia Studios was a creative space for musicians and artists. A wide range of recording artists made music here, and the church was also used for film productions and sound design for television series.
But times change. Our days in the music business have gradually come to an end, and recording studios aren't quite what they used to be.
So St. Cecilia has begun another chapter.
Today, we're thrilled to share this inspiring space with travellers from around the world. They get to experience the same things that drew us to this little corner of Purcells Cove in the first place — the ocean, the quiet, the character of the neighbourhood and the feeling of being tucked away somewhere special, while still being just minutes from downtown Halifax.
St. Cecilia has always been a place for creativity, inspiration and good memories. We like to think our guests are simply adding the next chapter to its story.
