Contemporary Oceanfront Cottage with Private Beaches, Trails, and Gardens
The Rose Cottage was rebuilt in 2009 in a West Coast Contemporary style. Overlooking the ocean to the south and west, the cottage is part of a picturesque, park-like six-acre oceanfront property known as the Seaward Estate. Historically, Seaward was one of five fishing trap sites in Sooke until the 1950s.
Seaward offers a variety of beautiful natural landscapes, including two beaches with thousands of feet of scenic coastline, West Coast forest, and woodland trails. It remains one of the finest oceanfront properties in the Greater Victoria Region. As more oceanfront properties are being subdivided into smaller lots and redeveloped, a large, original oceanfront estate like Seaward—preserving its natural beauty and historical character—is increasingly rare.
The Rose Cottage features over 1,400 square feet of living space and underwent its most recent renovation in 2019. The cottage includes many impressive features: floor-to-ceiling windows on the south wall offer breathtaking views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains; a distinctive wooden ceiling crafted from Sitka spruce harvested from the property; an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area with in-floor heating beneath slate tiles; an expansive loft bedroom with a king-size bed and an attached powder room. The second bedroom, with a queen-size bed, is located on the main floor, along with a full bathroom. A sofa bed in the living room provides additional sleeping space. Seven massive cedar logs serve as pillars, tying the cottage’s design together with architectural charm.
Sliding doors on the main floor open onto a patio and a spacious private lawn, ideal for families with small children and/or pets. The patio includes outdoor seating, a dining table, and a BBQ. A beautifully landscaped garden by the main entrance offers seasonal color throughout the year. The Sunset Trail links the cottage directly to the West Beach access point. One guest once described her experience:
"Every time I walk back from West Beach, I follow the trail through the woods, and it leads me to the cottage. It reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood walking through a magical forest. At the end of the trail is the grandma’s little cottage."
The East Beach features a flatter, pebbled surface ideal for walking and is particularly popular with children and adults alike. The West Beach offers giant rocks, small coves, and hidden spots perfect for exploration. Many guests enjoy discovering the woodland trails. Benches at the ends of the Sunset Trail and Otter Trail are perfect for reading, wildlife watching, or enjoying a sunset. Others love picnicking on the Orca Trail deck, often with a bottle of wine in hand.
For those who need to stay connected, the cottage provides free Wi-Fi. A 50” smart TV includes cable channels, Netflix, YouTube, and more. On chilly nights, a wood stove adds warm, cozy comfort. If you're a stargazer, consider hiding away in a cove on West Beach on a clear, dark night—you’ll witness the Milky Way stretching over the Strait of Juan de Fuca and fading into the Olympic Mountains.
The Seaward Estate includes Rose Cottage (Vrbo 1333347), Rowan Cottage (Vrbo 1340568), and Creekside Cottage (Vrbo 2229506). Rose Cottage is located approximately 200 feet from both Rowan and Creekside Cottages. All cottages feature ocean-facing windows, carefully designed to ensure guest privacy with no windows directly facing each other.
