The natural wood paneling of this beautiful historic cottage will take you back to the era of its original owner: the beloved, namesake lighthouse keeper. The recent renovations create an attractive contrast with the old-fashioned surroundings. Enjoy a relaxing getaway at this traditional, historic cottage offering panoramic views of the ocean. Sleeps 6 (max.). 3 bedrooms (1Q-1Q-2T). 2 full baths. (1) 4 passenger cart. Direct beach access. Friday / Friday. 5:30 p.m. arrival / 11:30 a.m. departure.

Our favorite vacation rental ever!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Am I nervous to give our honest review? Yes, because selfishly you will all want to book it! : ) Since we can’t stay here year-round, we’ll hope a couple weeks are left for us each year to rent Captain Charlie’s III after this review. We have stayed in many vacation rentals and this now tops our list for several reasons. Captain Charlie’s III is filled with charm, history, and simple luxuries. The beds are incredibly comfortable, new furniture throughout, a stocked kitchen, and I haven’t even gotten to the best part: the VIEW! You cannot beat this location. From the living room, I watched the sun rise and set each day and it was glorious. The kids could run out on the beach from the private pathway and you are right down near South Beach. For our whole family, our visit was a gift. Previous reviews had mentioned the house being rustic and I’d change that to historic. It’s a lovely cottage with - from what we could tell - original restored floors and the best seaside deck. It does need a new microwave and shower curtain, but those are such a small things to mention compared to all we enjoyed. We dined on the deck and celebrated our oldest 10th birthday with the waves lapping on the shore in the distance. We slept in. We collected shells and saw the most beautiful stars with our kids. We wish we could move in! A return visit or 12 will have to suffice. Many thanks to the home’s owners for sharing this special place. Counting the days till our return...

The Most Relaxing Weekend

Rating Details: The property manager was adequately helpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was very happy with the location. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The location is absolutely great. Great views and easy access to the beach. The kitchen was well stocked. There were plenty of towels. But I expected the house to be clean and everything in working order. The shower curtain was covered in black mold and there was black mold in the bath tub grout. The air ducts were filled with dirt and dust. So much for the the extra Covid cleaning. The stove vent would not operate because the filter was dirty. The kitchen trash can needed to be cleaned. One of the porch rockers was broken. I inquired about the rain curtains on the golf cart and was assured the curtains were there. Upon arrival there were no rain curtains on the golf cart which made for a wet ride. We truly loved the house but will need to rethink about renting again.

Kitchen has most things you would need. Mike's Bites is right around the corner. Porch overlooking the beach can't be beat day or evening to watch sunsets. Walking distance to Shoal's Club. Can't be beat!

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We stayed in Captain Charlie’s 1 our first trip and it was really nice to return to BHI with 2 bathrooms this time. I think the privacy of CC3 vs CC1 is better. The view is good, maybe not as picturesque as CC1 with the walking trail and high dunes but still very nice. Overall I would recommend staying here. It’s an old house and there are old house things such as doors that aren’t tight, older fixtures, etc but it’s hard to beat the view and the location.

The beach was great and uncrowded even on Memorial Day week. One flaw was the late pickup for the Tram on our departure. It was over an hour late causing us to miss our ferry with no notification that things were running behind. Standing in the hot sun for over an hour was no fun and a bad way to end a lovely trip.Some things need attention:- screens are missing from windows or falling down- no rain "curtains" on the golf cart- no mat at the front door which would have kept sand out- washing machine instructions would be helpful, as starting it is quirky- dishwasher does not clean dishes (a bowl upside down in the top rack was still greasy with nothing blocking water). We tried to see if the jet openings were clear and they appeared to be clogged - one of which had a sharp metal object in it. We struggled with remaining soap on most dishes and had to hand wash them.- light over the cooktop is not working- we broke one wine glass and a Mr. Coffee carafe; please advise of any charges to replace these items.

We left a day early ....

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This was our 3rd time at. Capt. Charlie’s and were looking forward to it.The house appeared clean and then I went to cook in the evening. Pots and pans were dirty, grimy and frankly, gross. Past guests must have put them away after a cursory cleaning. My husband went to set the table and found the same condition on plates and glasses. First glance they might look clean but to touch they were not. There was not enough dish washer detergent, no sponges, one roll of paper towel. It was late. In order to eat, I had to scrub. Needless to say, we are surprised and will forewarn everyone. We know the cottages and what to expect. That is why we choose. I contacted Jenifer to alert her. Our cart’s top was torn away on the passenger side. Just an FYI, no flashlight or candles. We would have left because it was gross. I could not ( see correspondence to Jenifer). Ias you can tell I am still upset. Again, the cottage itself was fine.

Perfect for 2 People

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Captain Charlie's 3 is close to the Shoal's club, it's super adorable and perfect for 2 people. It's very clean and furnished so it feels roomy inside. It's an older home though, without an en suite bathroom for the master. The bathroom for the master is actually the only bathroom on the first/main floor. There are NO curtains or shades in the kitchen and dining area and that area faces the other cottages. Guests will need to cover the windows or cover up if they plan to go to the kitchen and bathroom at night. The stove was very old and finicky, but maintenance came by on our last day to measure for a new one.

Captain Charlie's # 3 Cabin -- Best View on the Island

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is a rustic cabin with the best view on the island. We love it and have stayed in the house many times. For a house of its age (over 100 years old) and its exposure to the elements over time, it is in great shape due to careful maintenance. Of the three cabins it is the only one with two full baths (one tub/one enclosed shower). The first floor bedroom with ocean view and its adjacent bath are something that I always like all of the times I have stayed here. Much of the cabin has been revitalized post storm damage, i.e. newly painted, newer furniture, new mattress in first floor bedroom, etc... The kitchen is functional with a new fridge. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, dishes, glassware, etc... The tub/shower surfaces are slippery so we always bring mats. The front porch is great for viewing sunsets and actually sunrises from the porch corner looking away from the ocean view. The beach is pristine. We had plenty of dolphin, pelican, osprey, deer (biggest buck ever) and boat sightings. Although restaurants were open we chose only to utilize take out from Horizons), i.e. Covid. The Market delivered our Family Meal (fried chicken, highly recommended) with our groceries when we got to the house, so my grandchildren and the rest of us could eat right away. We could never book pool time at the Club, even though we tried for every day we were there. Internet access is limited on the island, even when in the house connected to the WiFi. Cell phone reception is limited as well. Normally this is not an issue as we unplug at Bald Head, but takeout meal orders and recreational reservations are done online now, so make sure you book what you can before you leave home. Our bikes, extra cart, etc... were all done from home and were flawless. We should have booked the pool from home but didn't and that did not work out. But no worries...best beach time of all my stays. Sandcastles and wave splashes with my two little grandchildren!

A Quaint and Peaceful Place

This quaint home is in the perfect location with unrestricted views of the Atlantic and only two neighbors (Captain Charlie’s I and II). Very short walk to Mike’s Bites (you have to get the Italian Ice)/BHI Conservancy and short drive to East Beach/Shoal’s Club. Very secluded and beautiful location.
