Downtown Highlands - Walk Everywhere

Welcome to Highlands, North Carolina! If you're looking for a VRBO that is walking distance to most everything, then look no further. Lose yourself in the luxury and sophistication that Highlands has long been known for as a guest at our apartment.

Light and bright, the open concept creates a cozy yet spacious experience where you can relax or entertain in a modern meets rustic setting. Features include a fully equipped kitchen with gas range and granite counter tops, office nook for a working vacation, oak floors in the living area, laundry room with iron/ironing board, two porches and private parking for two vehicles.

In addition to the king size bed in the bedroom, we also have an EZ Bed Air Mattress elevated on legs with a cozy mattress topper for an additional 1-2 guests that can be set up in the living area, if needed.

A fun fact; the living area was once the dining hall of an old estate home situated above Founders Park. The pulley windows and coffered ceilings bring in the old Highlands character that is now hard to find. The apartment is on the second floor of a two story building, located above our Green Mountain Builders office.

As transplants to the area, we understand how easy it is to fall in love with Highlands and the surrounding area. As a real estate broker and builder, we are happy to help should you decide it's time for your own slice of paradise.

Love this place! It was perfect for my wife and me! It is as advertised. Right downtown, can walk everywhere! even though it is downtown, still very quiet and comfortable! Hope to come back soon!

This was in the best location to meet all of our needs. We could walk to parks, restaurants and the lovely community center for swimming and pickle ball. The accommodations met all ours needs and was clean and quiet.

Excellent Location

Returning guests to this conveniently located property. Owners have added a phenomenal new covered porch which makes for a lovely spot to hang out. In addition, owners have resided the outside, replaced windows and have plans to replace the front door and add central heating and A/C.Location is excellent, an easy walk into Highlands shops and restaurants.Overall, a very positive stay and experience!

Great Place!

Me and my husband and my small dog had a great getaway. This place was perfect for the three of us. Decorated so cute and very cozy. It is perfect location for access to downtown. Will definitely stay again!!

Close to Everything

Very comfortable and modern apartment that is in easy walking distance (sidewalks the entire way) to all Main Street shops and restaurants.

Fantastic stay

We had a fantastic trip. Beautiful weather, excellent location. The location is great your able to walk everywhere in town. The house is very comfy, feels like home. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back. Mary is a fantastic host.

Cute, comfortable cottage!

We love Highlands and this cute little cottage works perfect for us and our 2 small dogs. This is our 2nd year to stay here and we have already booked a month for 2024. The very best thing is being so close to town and walking everywhere including a number of trails, all the restaurants and fabulous shops. Mary and Steve are great hosts and have a hidden gem in this little treehouse cottage with a bit of luxury!

Easy Breezy

Easy walk to town and very close to restaurants and hikes. Checks all the boxes for a quick getaway to Highlands and no hassles. Good spot if you want to avoid any steep roads in (potentially) inclement weather. Outdoor space may feel limiting to some, but then again, you'll have all of downtown Highlands as your (practically) yard! Easy physical access and communication with owner.

Great location

This house is in a great location within a 5 minute stroll from downtown and two minutes to the best breakfast in Highlands at the Blue Bike. The apartment is really cute and comfortable but starting to show its age a bit with some older appliances and fixtures. It wasn’t a problem for us but if you like to sleep in you may be a bit bothered by some of the early morning road noise and activity at the gas station next door.

The best VRBO in Highlands!

From start to finish our stay was top notch. I don't think I can overstate the convenience of this location if you want the downtown experience of highlands. We walked everywhere the entire weekend, we didn't start the car once! We could not recommend this place enough! ps. If you enjoy an amazing thrift store, check out the one directly next door.

Great little apartment!

This apartment is perfectly situated in Highlands, NC. This was our FIRST visit to the area. We walked downtown multiple times a day, took day trips to hike and enjoyed the weather immensely. Mary came by to say hi and we felt very welcomed. The furnishings are being updated and if we decide to visit again by ourselves, would rebook this location as it is close to driving out of town as well as walking everywhere. Loved learning about the history of the original structure.

New Years Eve weekend

location was perfect. walking distance to town . neighborhood was also nice to walk around. the house is perfect size for a couple. beautifully updated and decorated. comfy king bed. basic small bath with shower/tub. Mary called just to see how we were doing! we were uncomfortable trying to light pilot light to wall heater and she had her husband come by to start. very private but close to everything! would stay again.

Walking Distance to Main St Highlands

Well furnished apartment walking distance from Main St Highlands. Located above owner’s real estate office, about 3 blocks from Main St. If you want a reasonably priced comfy place to stay in town instead of a cabin in the woods, with easy access to restaurants and the local brewery, this is a good choice. Had a little trouble with the heat but owner was responsive and helped us get it figured out. Despite freezing temps and rain, got in a lovely hike to Ranger Falls, had yummy BBQ at The Smokehouse and enjoyed being able to walk home after chilling at the dog-friendly brewery 2 blocks away.

We really enjoyed this house

1. Location location location. 2. The bed was super comfortable. We slept well in the bed room. 3. Front deck has ample size 4. Kitchen equipped. (You need to bring salt) 5. The living room is nicer in person than the pictures suggest. And the pictures are nice. It’s nicer in person. 6. Internet worked great. 7. Heated floors in bathroom 8. Not the cheapest rental. But super hotel alternative 9. 3 solid blocks to Main Street. Very doable Overall we liked and would stay again for sure.

Check in was not good. Lock box is antiquated and if you are not careful the box and key is likely to fall in one of numbers cracks on the deck which is difficult to retrieve, which is what happened to us. In addition to that there are no paper products (toilet paper and paper towels) or bath soap provided. These items we have always found provided in VRBO's which we have stayed in.

The location can’t be beat - easy walk to wonderful restaurants and shopping on the Main Street. Owners recently installed central air conditioning and heat making it super easy to be comfortable. Also provided a new larger, “smarter” TV. (We have stayed here multiple times.) It is like a home in the trees. Very comfortable.

Great location. Convenient for downtown walking distance. The description of the location was not accurate was off the road and the outside of the property did not match the picture. Suggest more information and updated picture. Bathroom needs an update. Sink did not drain and toilet seat needs replacing. Obviously a lot of upgrades to property would recommend a little more investment in these areas would improve experience. Overall we had a great weekend and would consider returning.

We moved to the area in 2001 and have since become established in both the Highlands and Cashiers communities professionally as a Realtor (Mary with Berkshire Hathaway) and a builder (Steve with Green Mountain Builders). Originally from Florida, it was easy to acclimate to the cooler summer temperatures and appreciate the fall colors. We have two children, two golden retrievers and two cats. In addition to real estate and building, we also have a yoga and wellness center in Cashiers (Fusion Yoga and Wellness) and Bungalow Boutique, a lifestyle store.

We love mountain life!

We purchased this property in 2007 when we were looking for office space for our businesses. The fact that there was an apartment upstairs was an absolute bonus. After some renovations, we initially rented the apartment out on a long-term basis for the first several years but decided to make the switch to vacation rentals and have been glad we did so. It's been a great place for family, friends and clients to stay when it's not rented.
