Our retreat sits on 61 acres of mountainous land. Views of the far away mountains make for great sunsets and little or no light pollution lets the Milky Way shine in all its glory at night. The higher elevation tempers the high temperatures in the day and provides cooler evenings for getting a restful sleep.
What is really cool about Red Hill and our property is the long history of moonshine and Outlaws who occupied the land more than 100 years ago. The infamous Whitson Brothers lived here. This is where their business partner, Kit Byrd lost his life to a bullet from one of the brothers in an argument. It is all documented in the book "Red Hill", available on Amazon. Get a copy to read evenings while here and explore the land for evidence of their presence. We recently uncovered an old moonshine jug in nearly perfect condition!
In addition to the pods (arched cabins) we have built for your enjoyment, we continue to build hiking trails so you can enjoy our property and get a little fresh air without ever leaving the property. As we enhance the land, the wildlife is returning. We have lots of deer and wild turkeys, a few black bears and an occasional coyote. Of course being in nature means there are also bugs. Like most places, we have lady bugs, stink bugs, spiders etc.
The Toe River is just a 5 minute walk down the road, and has a pedestrian bridge you can use to cross the river. If water sports are your thing, you are in luck. Our next door neighbor is an Outdoor Adventure business, running trips for tubing, white water rafting, kayaks and even rock climbing and nature hikes. While here, we hope you can experience the famous Appalachian Trail, only 15 minutes away by car.
Lastly, Mitchell County is famous for its Rhododendran festival each spring, its thriving artist community, with many arts festivals on the calendar each year. This region is also well known for its Gem Mines, where you can pan for gems.
We hope you love your stay here!
