Información de la propiedad

Remodeled Unit #1, 7 min to Great Barrington, 12 min to Ski Resorts & Trails

Nestled in history and nature, The Historic Kellogg House, built in 1739, is the third oldest house in the Berkshires. Recently updated, the farmhouse seamlessly blends rich history with modern comforts, offering an exceptional retreat. Just 7 minutes from Great Barrington's center less than 12 minutes from Butternut and Catamount Ski Areas, and adjacent to the Appalachian Trail and the tranquil Housatonic River.

Your home away from home is a charming 1 bedroom duplex apartment, thoughtfully constructed in the 1940’s as a separate wing to The Kellogg Farmhouse. Recently renovated it offers all the amenities required for a comfortable and memorable stay. You can still find local Sheffield marble around the property which was also used to build the Washington Memorial. This modern oasis within a historic setting seamlessly combines the past with the present. Tons of light filters through the large windows that face the gardens that look out into a large field with gardens. There are plenty of areas to enjoy the outdoors and you are a short walk away from the Historic Appalachian Trail. There are two main entrances to the house; if you are facing the property, your entryway is the door to the left with a stone walkway leading you from the parking area straight into the house (please look at the pictures provided). Your unit is located on the first floor of the house. You have an outdoor patio area overlooking beautiful gardens, and a lovely field with a row of 150-year-old willow trees that line the Housatonic River. During winter months, we ask our guests to use the main entrance as an exit, as the stairs in the back can get slippery.

Historical Significance:
Deacon Silas Kellogg, born on April 7, 1714, in Westfield, Massachusetts, constructed the Kellogg House in 1739 upon marrying Ruth Root. Silas, a descendant of influential families, became a prominent figure in Sheffield, serving as a gentleman farmer, and deacon, and holding government positions, including County Treasurer. He played a pivotal role in the Stockbridge Convention of 1774, and Massachusetts call for freedom from English rule.

Silas Kellogg's legacy intertwines with the Sheffield Resolves, a document preceding the Declaration of Independence. Silas, a signatory to the resolves, exemplified his commitment to fighting British grievances. His sons, Asa and Silas Jr., actively participated in the War of Independence, embodying the family's dedication to freedom.

Despite Silas's roles as a patriot, rumors suggest involvement in counterfeiting prevalent in Sheffield during the 1700s. Ruth Kellogg, Silas's wife, met a tragic end at 96, succumbing to burns from a fireplace accident. Buried at Sheffield Plain Cemetery, both Silas and Ruth left a lasting imprint on American history.

The Kellogg Farmhouse bears witness to this transformative period. Built in 1739, the homestead preserves the spirit of independence, reflecting the Kellogg family's role in shaping America's narrative of freedom. As custodians of this history, we, as first-generation immigrants, honor the Kellogg legacy, acknowledging its vital contribution to the founding of the United States. Every beam in this historic dwelling resonates with the enduring legacy of those who once called it home, inviting guests to marvel at the layers of history within.

This place is peaceful, stylish, and comfortable. Full kitchen with large cooking space and many cook books. Feels like it might be a nice place for a writer's retreat too. Many thanks and hope to stay again!

Nice apartment. Beautiful grounds and gardens. We enjoyed ourselves. It was a very comfy place to return to as we enjoyed Jacob's Pillow and our other explorations around the Berkshires.

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful 7-day stay at Rosibel & Chris' farmhouse apt in Sheffield MA. Although we had a brief glitch at check-in, it was quickly remedied. The location was perfect for us, just south of Great Barrington, and close to all the Berkshires has to offer. The apartment itself has a perfect open lay-out for two people. It is very bright, clean, and comfortable. The full kitchen with island allowed us to prepare several meals so we didn't have to dine out constantly. While the kitchen lacked a few cooking basics (such as a regular size frying pan and baking pans), we were able to work around that. If you're planning to prepare meals during your stay, you might check with Rosibel in advance; I'd guess she would happily supply what you need. Both our hosts had excellent & quick communication throughout our stay. What really made our stay a real joy was the property. Although we experienced a couple of unusually hot humid days and a couple steady rain days, we were still able to enjoy the fabulous back yard. In back of the home and property is a huge field of growing corn. And the backyard itself is a delight--lined with trees, beautiful plants, flowers, and statuary, all lovingly maintained by Chris. On most days we were able to sit out and enjoy the gorgeous & serene property in our camp chairs for our morning coffee and evening dessert & wine. We would like to express our deep appreciation to both our hosts for a wonderful stay!

Hiking The AT

This location was perfect for hiking the AT. The trail is only a few feet from the front door. The backyard is very nice, and they had chairs and tables to sit out. The apartment was a nice size for two people. There was no tv, so we used our computer. The kitchen was great to have since we didn't plan on eating out every night. There are plenty of restaurants in the area. The hosts were great and very responsive. The fall colors made the trip extra special.

Rosabel and Chris were excellent hosts. They are working on developing amazing gardens on the grounds which makes the outside a pleasure. They were friendly and personable and responsive when needed. This was our second stay there and I expect we'll be back.
