Fisherman's Retreat. On South Branch of AuSable River, Clean, Comfortable

Welcome to our fisherman's river cabin on the South Branch, with a dock on the river for leisurely relaxation. We are selectively renting this property that you will find to be well-equipped and clean. Almost new cabin, knotty pine interior with fly tying bench. Two bedrooms each with two beds and a futon in the living room. Cabin sleeps and has a maximum of 4 people. Kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, and oven, coffee maker, pots, pans, utensils. WiFi is rock solid. Property is automatically backed up by an integrated generator.

The property is on the S. Branch, just downstream from the legendary Mason Tract which has miles of wilderness river with no cabins, little fishing pressure, and great hiking trails. We are located 5 miles from Gates Lodge, and one mile away from Kneff Lake. Great area for fishing, hiking and bird watching. Please note this is a NON SMOKING PROPERTY inside and outside.

Important: When making reservations, please keep at least 1 full day open on both sides of your reservation. Cleaning crews need to be scheduled.

Great Stay at the Fisherman's Retreat

The property was well maintained and as advertised. The interior was clean and comfortable. The location was great. We dropped our kayaks onto the South Branch from the property and had a wonderful kayak trip.

Had a great time at Steve's cabin. Everything was as described in the listing and the property was perfect for our kayaking getaway on the AuSable. Nice place with all the necessities, and then some!

Perfect location on a very fishable part of the South Branch of the Au Sable River about 13 miles east of Grayling, MI. This is definitely the best "fishing cabin" I've ever stayed in. Thanks for allowing me to be your guest. We will be back.

Another Great Week on the Au Sable!

Thanks, again, to Steve Loving for letting us enjoy the "Fisherman's Cabin" on the South Branch of the Au Sable River. It was another perfectly enjoyable week! I also want to comment on the quiet neighbors you have: Please pass along my gratitude to them all. It was almost as if we had the entire area completely to ourselves. We have rented cabins in the past and had to deal with noisy, partying neighbors day and night during our entire stay, but you are certainly blessed with some of the best!

Best rental on the river

Hate to let the word get out, but from a fisherman's perspective, this is the best all around rental on the Ausable river system. Steve is a great host, and the cabin is extremely well appointed. Plus, the location..... Just an amazing place.

Great trip

This was a repeat family weekend for us at this property. Steve is a great host and communicator. House was stocked with all amenities needed, wifi was strong, and the view/grounds were impeccable. Close to Grayling if anything was needed. My kids loved fishing on site, and pizza from Paddle Hard Brewery can't be beat. Great wholesome, family weekend. We will be back!

Clean and peaceful property. Look forward to our next stay.

Owner was quick to respond to request. Arrival instructions were clear and accurate. Home was clean and well equipped for our needs. Location on the river provided sounds of the water and sights that awed children and adults. Information for activities and local attractions were perfect for our stay

Great stay/will definitely be coming back!

Stayed here 3 nights with some friends for a weekend of fly fishing and relaxation. What a gem! Clean, up to date and great location for kayaking, golf and fishing. Easy access to the S. Branch, main stream and North Branch. Highly recommend the wade downstream from the Canoe Harbor Fishing Access trail. Owners were accommodating and provided good instructions. Will definitely be coming back!

Great Spot on the River

The location of this property is the best part. It is right on the South Branch of the Ausable. Very private and quiet. Fishing was great right out the back door. No cable television, but that is probably best to get you outside. The only thing is that you are expected to do more cleaning of the property at checkout than other properties. That is likely because of the difficulty of finding help cleaning the place due to it being remote. Overall, it was nice to get away and I had a great time fishing.

Perfect Stay!

Stayed at the Fisherman's Retreat for a long weekend while in town visiting relatives. The property is perfect; there was plenty of room for the four of us in the cabin with a nice living room area and a HUGE dining room table in the kitchen, which was perfect for gathering. The property is right on the South Branch of the Ausable River, so you could have coffee in peace and tranquility. We went canoeing one of the days at Paddle Brave out of Roscommon and we dropped off the kids at the cabin and only had 2 bends to Smith Bridge to drop the canoes. It is a remote location that is perfect for getting away. No "screens" to stare at (phones, computers, tvs) which was PERFECT. I HIGHLY Recommend, and we will definitely be back!

Great stay, great place for small families

This is our second stay at the Fisherman's Cabin. Steve is a great communicator, and the place is great. Our family loves it. Great accommodations, river access, kids are obsessed with the bluegill pond, great wifi, kitchen/grill, big table for family meals and games, fly tying desk, back entrance with a great bench for puttingon fishing gear...close access to Grayling and Roscommon. The only minor wish list recommendation would be a thicker mattress on the futon or a different couch, but that's minor. I'd still grade the cabin a 99%. We love it, and I hope we can go back again in the future. Our young daughters (ages 4 and 6) ask all the time when we can go back to "fish camp." Thanks for helping us make great family memories.

This place is as advertised, with ready access to the South Branch. We had a Wednesday to Sunday booking after a hectic week,and this property afforded us some much needed down time. It was the perfect match of isolation and convenient access to everything we needed (17 minutes from Grayling), and centralized access to all of the Au Sable. We didn't actually need to leave the property to enjoy nature, and so we didn't. This was pretty fantastic as I forgot my handy dandy Au Sable guidebook and would have had to rely upon memory to navigate to all the obscure honey holes around town. The rental is exactly as described in the photos, and is fully furnished with everything you need to have a good time. It was lovely fishing off the dock, and seeing people wrapping up their water sports day at the Smith Bridge pick up spot as they paddled through. 10/10 would recommend whether or not you're an angler.

Peaceful

My husband and I, including my mother in law stayed for a long weekend. The place was super clean (and I'm picky), and well appointed. The property is absolutely beautiful!! The river was crystal clear, my husband caught a few brook trout on fly's. We also fished the blue-gill pond and caught one, I think it was to late in the year. We enjoyed our time sitting on the beautiful deck. As one reviewer mentioned, the home connected to it on the R side is the owners, I believe. I think it would of been uncomfortable had they been there, and hopefully they tell the guests prior to accepting a reservation that they will be there. Steve was wonderful, and answered all questions and very accommodating. There was no one in the day before us, so he let us come a little bit early. Rent it, you won't regret it!

2nd stay - won't be back

This was our second stay at the Fisherman's Retreat; you can read my first review below from August, 2015. The property is amazing, it is in a secluded location, and it is well maintained. The issue we had this trip was that the property is not stand-alone; the cabin is attached to the owners living quarters. I would highly recommend getting feedback from the property owners about if you will be "sharing" the property during your visit. We stayed for three nights and were told there would only be on day of "crossover", but we ended up sharing the property for the whole three days with the owner. The first morning we received a knock on the door to turn off the outside light that had been left on. The last night we realized that the owner had entered the property while we were gone for the day; not the best thing for "privacy and seclusion'; especially when it is your children that point out someone had been in the cabin. I did try to reach out to the owner prior to writing this review and haven't heard back. Overall, a poor experience even though the property is amazing (hence, the 3 stars).

Fish out your back door. Take a walk up stream and fish down to the cabin. Enjoy the dock for cocktails and the large wrap around porch with a view of the river. If you have beginners they can practice their skills on the pond before hitting the stream.
