At Awapuhi Views, you can check out the surf conditions, and enjoy the breezes

Our home is located halfway down the Miloli'i Rd. We have a very large master bedroom with a King bed, the Master has bow- windows and its own door to the wrap around deck.oceanside deck. The Master bedroom has a walk-in closet, and en suite bath with tub and shower and twin sinks. The Second bedroom is smaller, has a queen bed, and has sliding doors to its own side of the deck. It has 2 closets, and a nearby bathroom with shower. Fixtures are by Kohler throughout. All rooms have great reading lights. The Kitchen is well stocked, including spices, and the usual electronics. Coffee maker, French press, and a small grinder. The dishwater includes a steam cycle. This region is on catchment (rain) water. Filtered springwater is provided via a counter dispenser. A rainwater storage tank is located below the house and includes all the safety modifications recommended by the Univ of HI guidelines, including a UV sterilizer. You will slightly hear the water pump going on and off. We do not drink the water. It is safe for personal and kitchen use, and is pH buffered, but we do NOTdrink the water. The showers have a little switch on the faucets to adjust/limit the flow . In the kitchen, a brita filter pitcher is in the refrigerator and is used for the final rinse on food prep. Drinking water will be provided also. Use the drinking water to make ice cubes. You may also fill some of our jugs in the garage from the free spring water at Waiohino to the south (just before Naalehu). It is the best tasting water ever. Other free sites are available also. If you are going out hiking or taking long day trips to the Volcano, having ample water in your auto is a must for drinking or rinsing off.

The patio furniture is lightweight, so feel free to move it around to suit your needs. House features include granite counters that look like lava flow, and travertine stone, or cherry wood floors, and new privacy French doors. The dining area is cozy and colorful. The large island is great for planning from your maps. The artwork is part local artist (Cindy Coats), and part unique, or gifted pieces. All ceiling fans are new, and for warmer times, there is an easy to use, portable 10,000 BTU A/C unit. But really... the night "land breeze" comes down from 14,000 ft, so we've only used it once!

We have wireless wi-fi from a local system that works well, the signal is boosted up to us via antenna with about 10 channels, and a blue Ray player and assorted DVDs in the TV stand . Mobile cellular devices will work best once you sign into the wifi network. The router is strong, so you can keep up with your calls and emails from the deck. To aid your planning, there are maps, and reading books that can be swapped out while you are with us. The living room includes a futon sofa, which can be opened if you prefer.

Miloli'I, old the Hawaiian fishing village, is down the road and to the south a bit, and is a story unto itself. You drive through the Hawaiian residences to get to the old historic village. A natural lava flow becomes the boat launch area. Fishing tournaments are held regularly. Lock you car. Bring a ziplock dry bag for your keys. In the village and looking to the right: there is a sea wall that has is a ladder for easy water entry and exit. The snorkeling is pristine, but don't snorkel in the boating areas! The sea wall may be used by boats to off load people, or to use the crane like-lift for larger tuna. So keep an eye out for boats. Shore diving is also super from this area, and can be arranged. So bring your Certification-card.
If your are up for a little hike... just past the gathering hut on the left (south)side, and the basketball court, is a walkway to another bay called Honomolino Bay. Follow the coastline until you see a little tidal bay, and the trees get thick. Look for the yellow painted arrows to find the trail. Part of the trail is open to the sunshine, so pack water, wear sturdy shoes and bring your lunch and snorkel gear. You may have this beautiful palm tree lined, black sand beach all to yourself. Two beach chairs with carry straps are ready for your use.
Another snorkel place is at the northern end of the Miloli'i subdivision. Follow the road all the way down and bear to the right corner. You may see cars parked at "the snorkel rock". This is a series of rocks that have been cemented and boarded together. Don't go in when there is a swell/surf. Experienced snorkelers only, as you have to swim back to the snorkel rock to get out of the water. Kayak guides are available in the area with access from either snorkel site.

Back at the house, for outdoor cooking, there is a gas grill in the garage. Please use it on the driveway for fire safety. The subdivision has a small volunteer fire service truck, their tank kept full from its own catchment water system. Otherwise Fire and EMS from Captain Cook, may be 30 -40 minutes away. Citronella candles are there for use as needed at dusk. Milolii historically has had a dry climate, but 3 years of El Nino rains have increased ground cover plants, and with it mosquitos. County spraying is done at times, and and at our property soapy sprays are used regularly. Skin bug sprays are up on the refrigerator, for your use as needed, especially at dawn and dusk. Please be careful walking on loose rocks, and hilly areas. It takes a few days to adjust to the terrain. Do NOT go below the house from the right (north) side, as its too steep for those unfamiliar. The steepness of parts of our lot, and the natural ravine between us and our neighbors to the north, is the reason we limit children to age 12 and over.

There is a laundry room in the garage. Its a pretty slow fill due to the water pump, so I usually do laundry while preparing an evening meal. Inside the garage is a clothesline, and hangers, so you can move your stuff through the dryer process quicker. Extra trash bags, ziplocks, and rags are there on my custom bench! Outside is a hose to rinse gear. We have a few pieces of snorkel gear , and a bogey board, in the laundry room. but if you plan to do a lot of snorkeling, you are better off to rent gear in Kona, to get a proper fit.

The closest restaurants, groceries, and gas are to the south in the community of Ocean View. Its about a 10 minute drive, to go up the hill to the main Highway 11, turn right, then another 10 miles heading south to Ocean View., 25-30 minutes total. "Mehe" Restaurant and Bar, just south of OV on the left side has excellent local fish, grass fed beef, and great calamari. In OV are there 2 grocery markets, and 3 gas stations. By the Ace Hardware entrance is a sub, pizza, mex place, and a bakery. Food trucks are starting to show up too. Don't forget L&L Drive In, on the ocean side for local and Hawaiian food. Saturday is a farmer's market with food and arts and crafts. For a 50 minute drive from home, you can backtrack north towards Captain Cook, and find numerous burger, and local diners (some close at 7 pm!) , and also excellent Pizza at "Patz Pies". If you want to refill extra water jugs you can stop at Hookena.

To go to theVolcano area, get an early start , pack a lunch, and bring one or more of our coolers along. The town of Volcano has many restaurants, art and gift shops and is a gateway to the National Park. Refer to their website for events and guest speakers. ack some flash lights for later. Night is incredibly dark on the lava.

Fruit and vegetables are for your taking. The ground cover behind the driveway is a type of oregano. There are numerous papaya trees, a breadfruit tree, lilikoi vines, and a dwarf apple banana tree (extremely sweet). Luscious ground cover tomatoes are along the driveway, and below the house on the left. Grab a scissor to cut the tomato stems. Wash very well. Do NOT handle any snails in the gravel or driveway, as they can carry diseases. We also have Poinsettia trees , which blooms white flowers at Christmas, also Plumeria, palm, and orchid trees. We hope you enjoy our space. Our property was like new, but with little greenery when we purchased in 2011. It is still a work in progress! County:STVR# and NUC# pending:

Epic views with lots of roosters

I will start by saying that this house and lay out are absolutely gorgeous and has everything you need to enjoy your stay on the island. It is a little out of the way from Kona proper (about 1hr20min) but the view of the ocean and the stars at night totally make up for the very dark windy drive to the house at night. After you do the drive a time or 2 you get used to it.There's plenty of windows to enjoy the cool breeze at night and enjoy your coffee on the lanai in the morning. The master bedroom bed was very comfortable and the view stunning every morning. Here's the only thing that really drove us nuts about the house, the dang roosters! Now as a clarification, they are all over the island not just at the house but there were definitely 3 to 4 that live in the trees right behind the house. You will be woken up between 3 and 4am everyday by them. You will have to acclimate to chicken time to actually get sleep meaning I went to bed at 8pm to be up by 4am. I had earplugs thankfully and the windows will have to be shut in the bedroom and I slept with a sound machine as well. Yes, it's frustrating but by the end of the trip me, Luis, Juan, Miguel, & Blanco were able to cohabitate. Yes, we named them lol! If these are things that you can deal with then definitely rent this house, you won't be disappointed. Maybe a little sleep deprived, but once you're up and planning your day you'll find that you have everything you need to have fun on the island. Very clean too!

Transporting Ocean View!! South Capt Cook

Stay #2 for us at this Hawaiian haven. Situated on a hillside at 1k'+ elevation with a wrap-around deck-evening sunsets were breathtaking. Superb amenities with an abundance of towels, comfy beds, and local fruit stands. Abundance of free-range roosters, too, lol. The owners are great - easy to reach should you need to contact them and very accommodating! Mahalo Terry and Debbi

The views!!

Unobstructed ocean views, what more can you ask for. The majority of the time we were at the house was spent on the lanai simply enjoying the views. This was one of the few homes we’ve stayed at that provided binoculars, a big plus. The furniture, not counting the beds, is sorely in need of upgrading. The lanai alone is crying out for more & varied seating. The only tv in the home is old & does not support even Netflix so you are left with the few cable stations that get a signal. A little disappointing in this day & age. And the kitchen could use some new knives to cut all the wonderful fruits available at the farmers markets & roadside stands. However, none of the negatives would prevent us from staying here again. The view says it all. (Forgot to mention the feral chickens. Bring earplugs, they start crowing right outside the bedroom windows sometimes at 2a!)

Pure Bliss

This home is in a remote housing area about an hour from Kona. This is our 2nd stay in this home & we love being away from the crowded Ali Drive condo area. This home has a wonderful ocean view & has all the things needed for feeling right a home. The owners Deb & Terry have made sure the home is well maintained & are wonderful when we spoke with them. We will definitely plan on a 3rd visit in the future.

Beautiful place- Could use refurbishing

This house is beautiful, spacious, and in a wonderful location away from the hustle and bustle of Hilo and Kona. Note that if you come here, going anywhere is basically an hour drive. Some components of the property are aged and need reworked- many boards in the lanai are very worn and need replaced, some of the piping in the second shower leaks, someone had made off with their smoke detector batteries prior to our arrival, and the sliding door to the second bedroom doesn't appear to lock. Other than those issues, we found our stay to be pleasant and hassle-free. Mahalo!

Wonderful and amazing stay at Awapuhi views.

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at this lovely home on the Big Island of Hawaii. Deb and Terry are wonderful hosts. The home is a spacious 2 bedroom home with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. Sunsets were beautiful. We had everything we needed at the home. Deb has beach chairs, coolers, and umbrella which we used many times. We found the best beach to be Hookena down the road and we always found a parking place. Parking is an issue when you go anywhere. We drove almost 900 miles during the week we were there. They call it the Big Island for a reason. Be prepared to drive. We booked a circle island tour the first day there and got to see major island sightseeing places on the tour. Mauna Kea night stargazing tour and night swimming with Manta Rays are a must do. The home is lovely, secluded, and private. We love staying at homes in neighborhoods off the beaten paths. We would definitely stay at this home again next time. So far, the Big Island is my favorite between Oahu and Big Island. Maholo Deb and Terry. Hope to return to the Big Island soon.

Loved it

I’ve stayed in a number of VRBO rentals. If one does their due diligence it’s always a positive experience. This house did not disappoint for sure. As we are in the process of finding a home and moving to the Captain Cook area this house sealed the deal that we’re making the right choice of location. Don’t look any further for an any nicer comfortable and wonderful host this is it!!!

Slice of Paradise

We had a wonderful experience at this property. It’s a beautiful home with all the amenities we needed to use it as a base and relax. The view of the ocean from the lanai was gorgeous. We spent all the time we could put there. It was a very peaceful location away from the tourist hot spots. Sometimes the next door rental was a bit louder than we would’ve preferred but it wasn’t that bad and they definitely observed the quiet hours. We highly recommend this property.

Paradise over Miloll’i

Amazing sunsets & ocean views from the wraparound Lani. The home is a little over an hour away from Kona and the airport, it is a great location for the southern part of the island and makes it’s easy for a day trip to Volcanoes park, Hilo, Pahoa, Black Sands Beach and 30-40 min from Punalu'u Bake Shop. Deb & Terry are the best host you could hope for, communication was excellent and they make you feel welcome and really care that your stay is wonderful. We encountered a small water issue during our 13 day stay and they were on the phone immediately to get it taken care of. We definitely will return on our next trip to the Big Island.

Very nice property ~ Enjoyed our vacation

Pros: 1) Excellent sea view from the patio. We enjoyed waking up to a beautiful sea view, calm blue waters and birds chirping. This was the best part! 2) Very nice quiet location and great neighborhood 3) We enjoyed the papayas from the Papaya tree and cherry tomatoes on the property 4) The property is very well maintained Cons: 1) Ran into water problem for 1st two days as there was no running water. We had to go out without shower. The plumbing problem was fixed next day. We got some water cans which we could use while the plumbing problem was being looked into to use in toilets. Debbie and her sister offered their cabin few miles down for us to take shower the 2nd day. Once the plumbing problem was solved and water refilled, rest of the days were good. Debbie did give credit for the inconvenience we had. 2) Trashed needs to be dumped few miles down at the fishers village at the end of your stay

Terry and I met and married in Honolulu, living there 5 years before moving to Florida in 1980. We are both in the medical field. My sister, Bertha Basabe, moved to Oahu around when we married, and moved to the Big Island after marrying her husband. They own an aquaculture business, and bought a home in Milolii down the hill from where ours is, back in the mid 1990's.It was totally "off the Grid". Electricity came in 2006, and with the real estate boom, more homes were built in Milolii. We watched prices go up, considered building a place, then the market went down. When we bought our "Awapuhi Views" in 2011, it was like-new, but had changed owners several times, and needed exterior upkeep. We bought it via an Auction process. On the day of the auction, humpback whales were frolicking below. We've made frequent trips to work on it, furnish it, and get the things there that you need to enjoy your time in paradise.

Por qué eligió esta propiedad

The historic Milolii Hawaiian fishing village is the real attraction. Our subdivision started in the 1960's. But the Milolii village has been there many years. There are not many navigable bays on the South Kona shoreline, and the village includes a lava launch ramp, and also a sea wall where a boat can come alongside and let passengers come on and off. At the sea wall there is also a lift that can hold up to a 1000 lb fish. There are fresh water springs nearby also.

Qué distingue a esta propiedad

Peace and quiet. Also great sea breezes during the day, and cooling land breezes at night. The land breezes are coming down from Mauna Loa, from nearly 14,000 ft. The mass of the volcano also interacts with and repels tropical systems. Go to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory website for activities, trails, guest speakers. It is all free once you are in the park.
please note that this is an agricultural and residential area. There can be chickens at neighboring homes, and a rooster is a recent arrival that flew in. As such you may hear the rooster, especially at the full moons. There may be festivities at other residences that we have no control over, unlike a hotel. While there are noise ordinences on the books, I am wanting my guests to wake me up if the noise is an issue for you.
