Houghton Canal Rocky Shores Retreat

Uudempi koti Portage-kanavalla kauniilla näkymillä. Takka, grilli, ulkona syöminen.
Suuri ja tilava. Täysin varusteltu keittiö. Keski-ilmastointi, WIFI ja kaapeli-TV. Maaseudun lähellä kaupunkia (3 kilometrin päässä kaikista nähtävyyksistä, ravintoloista, yliopistoista, ostosmahdollisuuksista jne.) Ainoa mitä tarvitset tuoda, on ruoka, saippuat ja kylpytuotteet. Meillä on runsaasti pysäköintialueita perävaunuille ja moottorikelkkakoneille.
Varaukset ovat lauantaista lauantaihin (15. – 30. Kesäkuuta, heinäkuu ja elokuu). Syys – kesäkuu 15. päivä on vähintään 2 päivän oleskelu.

Clean! Comfortable! There were 12 if us, and it was spacious. Lots of parking for trucks and boats. Well stocked kitchenware. Dock provided tie-up for boats and ladder for swimming.

Great place!

Portage Lake getaway

The home is perfect for a big group, great deck overlooking the water, nice dock on the water and the host's are fantastic.

Group hiking trip

We had a group of 11 stay at the Houghton Canal Rocky Shore Retreat for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The location is beautiful and peaceful. We were close enough to all the hiking we wanted to do and even dinner in downtown. The house was clean and well organized and our hosts were incredibly kind and communicative. We cannot recommend this place enough!!

Beautiful, well maintained, very clean and well stocked home!

We have stayed in this beautiful home a few times now. The owners are wonderful to deal with and I love that this place can sleep an army! The kitchen is stocked very nicely! Everything is very clean.

The Best

Houghton is my favorite city in Michigan. Lori and Phil have a beautiful house on the canal. Very clean and organized, and had additional items such as spices and coffee! I love the curtains, and the ships passing. I never wanted to leave! Lori and Phil again! Thank you!

Wonderful Vacation Spot

The Rocky Shores Retreat was amazing. The house was clean and move in ready! The host responded really quickly to every communication. The addition of the washer and dryer with detergent provided was so appreciated!! We made use of all of the amenities - dock, fire pit, sauna!!! We will definitely book here again!

Another great week!

This is our third year spending a week at Rocky Shores and we hope to keep coming back. Phil and Lori are great and very responsive hosts. The house fits our group of 13 perfectly. We love fishing and swimming off the dock and enjoying evening bonfires. The location is great with easy access to grocery stores, local restaurants and shops.

Houghton Portage Canal Vacation

Very clean, spacious, cottage. With numerous sleeping options. We had a very comfortable stay. I liked that the owners were close by, but it was still private. Easy, friendly communication with them. We had numerous fires in the fire pit. Grilling out on the large deck. The children did some fishing, they all caught at least one. Also did some swimming off the dock. We brought a boat and motor and a kayak to use. Convenient location near town and all the parks. I highly recommend this rental!

Can't wait to go back!

We loved our week here! The house is large, clean and is in a beautiful location. I had forgotten how wonderfully quiet it is in the U.P. We were there with our sons and their wives and children, 10 in all, and were very comfortable. The place is well equipped. The teenagers enjoyed kayaking and swimming in the lake and we all enjoyed the nightly bonfires in the fire ring. We had a large family reunion picnic and the place was perfect - a good grill and plenty of seating. The only thing I would like to see added are bedside lamps for those of us who like to read before going to sleep. A few books around would be nice, too.

Excellent for access to all the adventures

We had 3 families for our annual week and this was our first time to Houghton. Kids range from 9-16. House was perfect location with easy access to many of the places we explored, most within an hour. Yard was great for wiffle ball and volleyball. Fire pit large enough for all to enjoy. The deck and dock were perfect for watching the ranger and sipping a cup of coffee. 11 minute drive to Breakers to watch the beautiful sunsets. As expected per the instructions, we needed to bring all toiletries (soaps, shampoo, conditioner). Kitchen has enough pans, utensils, dishes to make large meals so just bring the food. Bring beach towels and blankets for the beaches.

I can't say enough how we loved this cottage and loved the hospitality of Lori and her husband. When Lori said you don't have to bring anything trust me she has it all including toys for toddlers. This cottage was well layed out so you were not stepping on each other. Sitting with your coffee in the morning looking at the lake and the smell of bacon cooking it doesn't get any better than that. My children, their husbands & my grandchildren loved it. My grandchildren cathing their little fish was my biggest hi-light to see the excitement in their eyes, priceless. Loved it so much we booked again next year. This is our new home away from home. Thank you Lori.

The house and property are in excellent condition. Very clean, well-stocked kitchen and up to date.

We’ve stayed here several times and have enjoyed each and every stay! We had 14 people there and it never felt small. Plenty of room to spread out and read by yourself, play games or watch a movie with small groups. We especially love the huge mud/laundry room that has a washer, dryer, shower and bathroom and tons of towels because we had lots of kids there. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed to cook and serve for our large group (pots, pans, crock pot, baking dishes, etc). There is plenty of room to run around outside and there’s a nice fire pit with plenty of wood for fires. The kids loved playing by the shore and sunning themselves on the pier. My brother rented a pontoon boat in the past and had no problem getting to the pier and docking. The owners live up the hill on the property and welcomed us upon arrival and checked in with us every now and then to make sure everything was ok. If we had any questions, they answered within minutes. Can’t wait to go back!

Beautiful Setting for a Family Reunion

Five siblings and their families, a cousin and a Mom/Grandma gathered here for the first week of July in the town our father grew up in and where we had vacationed as kids. We hailed from PA, FL, CO, WI, NE, and MD and we were hoping to replicate those fun-filled summers and did this very successfully in this lovely red home on Portage Lake, down to the daily sauna with the lake plunge at the end. The hosts were extremely helpful from the get-go and the house and property were in top shape upon our arrival. We woke in the morning to a gorgeous view of the lake. Since our large party needed a little more living space, the owners let my husband and I park our camper on the very large lot and hook up to electricity and water which was so helpful! We all enjoyed evenings on the big deck where we could see the lake and watch the kids play baseball (with a tennis ball). There is also horseshoes which got a good workout. We highly recommend this home and location and would choose to go back there again. Thanks Lori and Phil!!! Oh, we also chartered a boat trip with Sand Point Charters with Captain Brian Helminen off of Lac La Belle and caught 17 fish between 2 days (4+13). Brian is a super nice guy with 15 kids and you can find him on the Internet if you are looking to try fishing for some declicious Lake Trout, Steelhead Trout or Coho Salmon. We also spent a lot of time on Portage Lake with our 2 canoes and 1 kayak- you can easily tie them up to the L-shaped dock at waters edge. So long for now- we hope to be back to the good ole UP someday.

Fun in the snow

We booked this property based on the access to the trail (2-3 miles away from the property). Unfortunately, due to unseasonal weather the road shoulder did not allow for trail access from the property. Although we looked to the canal as a possible option, some poor ice conditions made this a potentially unsafe option. Ultimately, we ended up trailering snowmobiles each day which had both positive and negative implications. The house had some unexpected perks including a mud room with separate "locker" spaces so each rider could stow their gear. We really appreciated access to a garage for storing and working on snowmobiles (we have learned that this is a rare treat). The sauna was utilized by riders after a long day of riding and was able to warm riders feeling the chill. The sauna had a shower which turned out to be utilized more frequently than anticipated. One of the showers on the main floor lacked privacy due to being in the laundry room surrounded by windows. The other shower/full bath was located inside one of the bedrooms which got a little awkward. The upstairs half bath was rather small and was located between two bedrooms across from two of the open beds which made it also awkward to use in the middle of the night. It was very handy having the laundry and we appreciated the large island for cooking and prepping meals along with the additional seating. The parking was large as advertised. We would recommend marking with a flag or a pole the large rock (covered in snow) at the bottom of the parking as we ended up hitting it with the trailer. Overall we would stay here again in the future, and found the hosts to be very pleasant, responsive and helpful.

Such a great place to stay. After a busy day exploring Houghton and the surrounding areas, we enjoyed relaxing on the deck, drinking wine appetizers or sitting down at the dock enjoying the sunsets and quiet.

Fantastic property. Will stay here again when I’m the area. Only recommendation would be some directions to the house or a driveway marker of some sort. It was a little tricky for us to find!
