The Captain's Home: Art and History on the Coast of Maine

Step back in time into Capt. Robert Hichborn's home, an elegant and comfortable 163 year old respite from your travels along the coast of Maine. Centrally located, this historic gem is within an hour to everywhere; from Camden to Rockport, Belfast to Bar Harbor, Augusta to Bangor, and Castine to Deer Isle, you are in the center!

This lovingly cared for home boasts original wide pumpkin pine flooring, 10 foot ceilings, local art, board games, good feels, and very comfy beds and bedding.
The house has a parlor/game room stocked with board games, a comfy living room with ROKU TV and Sofa Sleeper, and a dining room that can seat eight (ask for extra chairs). All of the artwork is original and done by artists within an hour radius.

There is a care taker, Tiffany, who lives in an apartment above the kitchen with her entrance door in the home’s dining room. You will likely not see her unless you need her!

In the summer, the owner, Amanda, is often on premises with her Pitbull Chonkasaurus, Mike and his side pittie, Helen. She has a studio on the side of the home.

The stairs to the second floor where three of the bedrooms and the shower are located, are steep.

The twin bedroom is directly in front of the second floor bathroom; it is the hallway to the bathroom and has no door.

The gardens are coming along nicely. Please do not allow children or pets to play in gardens.

There is a fantastic porch to sit on at night to watch the stars and share stories from your day.

Laundry available for guests staying four or more nights!

Plenty of parking!

A delightful stay. The whole house was clean, comfortable and attractively decorated. The kitchen is nicely equipped and the beds very comfortable, and the grounds were very nicely maintained . Amanda was great about communication, and every aspect of the stay was great. We were visiting family, and wouldn’t hesitate to book this place again.

Lovely 19th century feel with a very modern kitchen. The host and fellow-inhabitant (of the back of the building) were charming, the very few times we saw them. Expectations were clear to us, but to reiterate; there's one shower and one giant tub in two bathrooms. The upstairs bathroom is accessed via one of the two bedrooms. We found this only slightly awkward. Put an "early riser" in one of those bedrooms. Location is perfect for visiting Belfast, Bucksport, or day trips to Blue Hills, Mount Desert Island, Camden, etc. Some traffic noise went away at bedtime. Lovely art and furnishings made the place feel special.

Thank you Peter! Reiterating the bathroom situation is helpful. Many don’t look at all the pics and read that the single room is a room-hall before the bathroom. Maybe they’ll read it here! Thank goodness there are three other large bedrooms and folks rarely use the single, except those with kids. I’ll also mention here that the stairs are steep! And there is only one shower and it’s on the second floor. The clawfoot tub in the first floor bath sure is inviting though! We enjoyed hosting you four and hope that you will come back and visit again. There is so much to see here in the mid coast of Maine!

Beautifully-appointed, very clean, comfortable bright, updated historic home in easy-access central location. Large kitchen had all that we needed, set up in a user-friendly way. Bathrooms great with lovely old bathtub, great water pressure, super cushy towels! Wifi worked great. Amanda and Tiff the housekeeper were very helpful and easy and fun to interact with, and we looked forward to seeing the dogs Mike and Helen each day. Our only slight issue was with high season traffic noise at night from Route 1, which is understandable given location, it just caught us off guard. Once we adjusted to it, it was fine. We kayaked, hiked, and ate out daily in all locations within an hour of the house. A few miles away at Stockton Springs Marina is an EXCELLENT restaurant called The Cove which is like eating at the home of a friend who happens to be a pro chef. Highly recommended.

Thanks Alyssa! Having lived in a city and suburban area, I don’t much notice any noise, but now I’m listening for it - and I can see how it might impact early bed-goers or late risers! The pups, Mike and Helen, already miss you and Allison. Thanks for treating them so well. The restaurant you’re referring to is The Club at Stockton Springs Marina. And you’re exactly right, it’s fantastic! Im glad you were able to take many of my recommendations, and, to give me some new places To recommend moving forward. Mike, Helen, Todd and I look forward to hosting you and Allison again!

I am from Maryland but my heart has been in Maine since I was 18 yrs old! I love this unique area of our country and sharing it with guests; I am happy to interact as little or as much as you would like, and I am also happy to help you put together an itinerary that suits the kind of experiences you'd like to have in this beautiful part of Maine!

Perché ha scelto questa struttura

I love living in this are of Maine because it is smack in the center of everything! You can be home from the airport in 42 minutes, to Bar Harbor in an hour, Lake George in 30 minutes, etc... So whether you want to dine, hike, swim, or meet artisans, it is all close!

Cosa rende unica questa struttura

This is a true captain's home built in 1862. The ceilings are 10 feet tall and the floors and walls are almost entirely original. The home sits on a granite basement (ask to go down!!) and boasts original pumpkin pine variable sized plank floors. Few homes along this stretch of the Downeast can boast so many original features; truly it is like going back in time, only with modern amenities!
