Welcome to Fernhouse Cottage, a secluded retreat on thirty wooded acres in the foothills of the Western Catskills.

Nestled in a forest of tall trees and lush ferns, this board & batten gem has been lovingly restored to create a magical upstate getaway. With a delightful balance of rustic charm and modern comfort, it is truly a space worth sharing—we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Settling into the cottage you’ll feel far from the routine of daily life, yet immediately at home. Thoughtfully selected interiors feature a mix of distinctive new and vintage furniture, along with hand-crafted pieces from our own design studio and woodshop. An eclectic mix of art, textiles and unique objects complete the space.

Around every corner is a cozy nook to seek out a moment of repose. Curl up with a good book, throw on a record, or simply enjoy the sounds of our lovely woods. For us, escaping the din of the city and settling into the tranquility of the forest is the most magical part of this place.

DETAILED PROPERTY DESCRIPTION:

Living Areas:

Enter through beautiful handmade mahogany doors into a charming breakfast room with heated fireclay tile floors and a cozy corner banquette. From here the open floor plan leads through a fully-equipped kitchen into an inviting great room with open dining and living areas. This is the heart of the home, with exposed-beam ceilings, hand-milled craftsman white oak floors, large picture windows, gas fireplace, seating areas, and a large handmade cherry dining table.

We’ve designed this space with restful afternoons and cozy evenings in mind. It is a place to gather with loved ones, enjoy a delicious homemade meal, curl up near the fire, play board games, or simply wile away the hours enjoying the serenity of life among the trees.

Our handmade mahogany credenza is home to lots of board games and puzzles, as well as a gorgeous vintage hi-fi audio system with WiFi connectivity, turntable and curated vinyl selection.

Kitchen:

Modern amenities meet timeless design in our well-appointed kitchen, with an antique cast iron farmhouse sink, honed black granite countertops, custom plaster wall treatments and alder wood cabinetry designed and handcrafted in our studio.

This space is outfitted with a 5-burner gas stove, full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, in-line water filtration, microwave, toaster, blender, hand mixer, and beverage hutch with drip coffee maker, French press, coffee grinder, tea selection, electric kettle, cocktail shaker and seltzer maker.

Bedrooms:

The main floor bedroom features a king bed, custom mahogany wardrobe, and a large sliding glass door for private entry onto the back deck.

The two second floor bedrooms feature vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and large picture windows with majestic forest views. Both rooms have queen beds and large dressers.

The fourth sleeping area is a sleeper sofa in our cozy den, with a plush queen mattress and memory foam topper.

All beds are outfitted with super comfy memory foam mattresses, soft white cotton linens, plush pillows and extra quilts for chilly nights. In each bedroom you’ll find waffle cotton bath robes and rubber spa slides for all guests.

Bathrooms:

The main floor bathroom features a walk-in shower with heated tile floors, shower bench, gorgeous Japanese wall tiles, custom cedar and plaster finishes, and walnut cabinetry made in our studio.

The second floor bathroom is a lovely oasis with heated cement tile floors, custom Fernhouse cabinetry, a large picture window and a luxurious soaking tub. Enjoy a calming soak with our complimentary bath salts and oils.

Both bathrooms are stocked with Turkish cotton towels and a selection of complimentary toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion) and other essentials.

Basement Den:

The large finished basement has several areas to relax or play. For rainy days and casual winter hangs, a cozy den with sectional sofa awaits. Play a round or two on our custom walnut ping pong table, handmade in our studio. Enjoy our wide selection of board games or settle into the reading nook with comfy leather chair and a bookcase of classics to choose from. For movie nights, we have a 56” 4k HD TV, streaming-ready with Roku and all the apps ready for you to log in.

This area also features a full-size refrigerator/freezer for additional food and beverages, and a laundry room available to guests.

Outdoor Areas and Spa:

When you’re ready to venture outdoors, a beautiful woodland oasis awaits.

Our property sits on thirty acres for you to explore, with private trails bordered by a lovely creek and several small waterfalls to admire along the way. We’ve also created several distinct outdoor spaces for you to unplug and connect with nature.

Fire up our wood-burning cedar hot tub for a uniquely luxurious soaking experience. A supply of firewood is ready for you, and the ritual of stoking the fire will transport you to a simpler time. Enjoy the fruits of your labor with a peaceful evening soak under the stars.

Savor the enchanting forest view as you indulge in a satisfying sweat in our custom-built wood sauna, then cool down in the crisp mountain air and outdoor rain shower.

When the weather allows (spring/summer/fall), our large mahogany deck is outfitted with a propane grill, outdoor seating area, lounge chairs, and plenty of space to stretch out (yoga mats included!) A large covered dining area features an oversized dining table and warm lighting for group dinners. (This space doubles as covered guest parking during snowy winter months). There are also several grassy areas for picnics or lawn games (badminton, horseshoes, bocce, paddleball), a backyard firepit with Adirondack chairs, an inviting hammock in a quiet shaded area, and more porches and patios to enjoy.
