Perfect spot for quiet vacation
We enjoyed our month-long stay here. we came to fish the St. John's River for crappie and were able to get into fish several times. a few cool days so fishing slowed way down, but overall this is a great get away! There are a LOT of houses in this neighborhood, but it still was quiet and the owner and neighbors we met were friendly. We would stay again if we want to return to the area and we highly recommend it.
We were looking for a small place and the pictures and description were accurate. The apartment is above the boat house and we were able to keep our boat right below. Very convenient. good place to tie up alongside the seawall.
The owner lives right there and we visited with them frequently when they came out to fish or feed the fish inside the boat house. We had no complaints, except perhaps the TV. The antennae didn't pick up many stations, but the TVs in the apartment are smart TVs so we had our Roku and really couldn't complain about the reception via internet.
Astor is a small town but several restaurants we tried and never had bad food: Sparky's was our favorite for breakfast; good breakfast at Rose Garden; burgers at Castaways. didn't discover the ice cream shop until the last day! there is a grocery store so we were able to fix meals at the apartment when we didn't feel like going out. I got a haircut at the local beauty shop, which is within walking distance. In fact, we would make a 2.5 mile loop about every day walking through the neighborhood, with perhaps a stop at the post office or the gas station next to it; crossing the highway (very busy route 40) to look at boats at a marina, then to Sparky's for breakfast. After breakfast walk past the Baptist Church (good messages on Sunday morning!) and on to the Ace Hardware store, past a couple of boat launches, then a little bar before getting back to the highway to cross and back to the neighborhood. There is a Dollar General in town, so really whatever you needed you could find locally.
Heading east you can take a walk through an outdoor yard ornament store in Barberville which is fun! of course close to Daytona though we didn't get over there. If you are into horse competitions, Ocala and Altoona both host shows that are fun to watch. And a bit further down the road from Altoona you will find a restaurant called the Mason Jar (just outside of Umatilla) that serves awesome homecooked meals!
We recommend this apartment if you plan to be in the Astor area.
Great base of operations for exploring Ocala National Forest
The Astor Apartment worked perfectly for our family of four for our Memorial Day weekend vacation. Our girls loved sleeping together on the pull-out couch which left us the bedroom. Kitchen and bathroom had everything we needed and was nice having a full-size fridge/freezer for the cooler ice packs I brought and the leftovers we took home. The market in town had a better selection than anticipated. Definitely recommend William's Landing (upstairs) at the Blackwater Inn for dinner (and wish we had gone back there rather than exploring further afield) and Sparky's for breakfast. Alexander Springs is a must-do; get there before 9AM and do the 2-hr kayak rental. Bring a picnic and spend the rest of the day alternately freezing in the springs and baking the in sun. It's like a Scandinavian sauna, Florida-style. :D In short, we were super happy with the apartment and proximity to good food and fun activities. It was kind of an impromptu booking for us as the weekend totally snuck up on us but I'm certain we couldn't have done any better had I spent a week of research and planning. Better to be lucky than good sometimes!
