An extraordinary place to stay - we almost couldnââ¬â¢t believe we were able to stay there, rather than just having a guided tour. The tower is genuinely historic and architecturally fascinating but has been refurbished to make it a great place to stay. It was very cold and snowy when we were there (-4C) but with the heaters and the wood burning stove we were very cosy. There are plenty of walks in the area and things to see, especially down the Clyde Walkway (past the alpaca farm) or up to Craignethan Castle. If you pick the right trains you can reach both Edinburgh and Glasgow in just over half an hour from Carluke station - much easier than driving, and thereââ¬â¢s a huge car park at the station. The kitchen is well equipped and there are supermarkets a few minutes away in Carluke. If you donââ¬â¢t want to cook the excellent Taal restaurant is a five minute drive away for Indian food. The welcome basket of local produce was a nice surprise.Itââ¬â¢s true about the stairs - even as pretty fit people we found the five flights up to the top bedroom quite challenging but you quickly learn to plan and minimise the number of trips (and to duck under the low doorways). Worth it for a genuinely unique experience.
