We’ve been holidaying in Woolacombe for many, many years and this was the first time that our family of 3 generations and the dog stayed at Combe Cottage, which is at the Combesgate end of the Esplanade. Wow, what a find; beautiful spacious accommodation, fantastic views, such a lovely, well equipped kitchen for dining or just sitting having a cuppa whilst watching the waves. A great bonus was the side porch enabling us to change our boots and wipe the dog down after a mucky walk before going into the house - great utility room too. Beds were so comfortable, all rooms having their own en suite. You’ll have to draw straws to decide who gets the master bedroom with its fabulous en suite and its own little balcony. So many places in this house to just sit and relax and enjoy the views (or try to escape for the grand kids) especially on a rainy day.
I really don’t have any negatives to say about Combe Cottage, everything we needed was there, including books, games, and a smashing wooden train set that kept the 3 year old entertained for the duration of our stay.
There is a steep slope up to the house, which could be tricky for anyone with mobility issues but somehow even my creaky old knees coped.
Combesgate beach, literally across the road, is a little paradise, accessible when the tide is out with great rock pools for the kids to explore and so much quieter than the main beach. This beach may not be suitable for those with mobility problems as quite a lot of steps down to it and climbing up again may be a little challenging. Barricane beach is also a gem, great for collecting shells and again very peaceful and sheltered from the wind. This beach is easier to reach with a sloping path.
All in all we fell in love with Combe Cottage, really lovely accommodation - as soon as we walked in it felt like ‘coming home’. We thoroughly recommend this delightful property and hope to return next year.
