Summary:

Captains Cottage is a newly renovated gem tucked away in the heart of Dartmouth, just off the charming shopping lane of Foss Street. This cute yet stylish cottage has a fun nautical theme, cleverly set out over three floors with maximum comfort in mind. The master bedroom boasts a Super King Size bed, and the bathroom includes a very large walk-in shower. Start the day refreshed in the large kitchen-diner. Then return to the bright, airy first-floor lounge to relax above the bustling town below.


Accommodation:

The front door leads into the open-plan kitchen-diner, with wood-effect flooring throughout and plenty of hanging space for coats. The dining area comfortably seats six, and there's a large wall-mounted smart TV. The shaker-style kitchen includes a coffee maker, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, and washer-dryer.

Upstairs is the lounge with comfortable sofas, nautical-themed décor and a large, wall-mounted smart TV. One of the sofas doubles as a sofa bed. Window seating provides additional space to relax and watch the world go by. The family bathroom has a large walk-in shower with a rainfall-effect feature.

The master bedroom has a super-kingsize bed. It is a 'zip-and-link' bed which can be configured as two full-size single beds upon request when booking. The second bedroom has a double bed.


Parking:

There is space to pull up outside for unloading and a car park permit for the Mayors Avenue Car Park (about a minute's walk away).

A parking permit is provided for the Mayors Avenue Car Park, which is a 5-minute walk away. Please note from Nov 2026 the Parking permits are now only valid in Mayors Avenue Car park between 3pm and 10am between 25th of May and 1st September. During this time guests would have to use the park and ride at the top of the town.

Short Easter break

We had a lovely stay at Captain's Cottage. It was clean, comfortable and brilliantly positioned to be able to walk everywhere in Dartmouth. The parking permit is a much appreciated perk with the cottage as we didn't have to worry about parking. This was our second stay in Captain's Cottage and we hope to return again in the future.

Great base for exploring Dartmouth

A lovely property that is very well furnished. Spacious and pretty quiet given it is located near a pub. Dartmouth sleeps by about 11pm! Only improvement would be on the stairs. They are known to be tricky but a handrail on the top floor would be wise.

Fantastic cottage in great location

Had a fabulous few days at captains cottage. The property is spotlessly Clean, with everything you could wish for. Tasteful decor and beds were really comfortable with lovely linen. The cottage is in an excellent location, near to all facilities.. only negative is shared courtyard which is a big grim, but it didn’t bother us as didn’t need to use it and you don’t need to go through it at all of you don’t want to. Would, without question, book again!!! Super stay!

Nice and bright apartment. Going up and down stairs was a bit of a chore if you forgot anything. No mirror over sink in bathroom made shaving difficult. But overall all a very good apartment. Shower room was excellent. Also car park pass was good.

Lovely week in Dartmouth, despite the weather.

We had a lovely stay in this property despite the weather. The scenery in this part of the country us beautiful and the walks we did from the house were delightful. The house is well catered for, although the stairs are very narrow and the bathroom being on the floor below the bedrooms was a bit of a nuisance. The bathroom despite having a huge shower was a little cramped. The bed in the master bedroom is a bit too large for the room, a wardrobe or more hangers to hang trousers would also be good. However, it was a nice break. We’d recommend the Dartmouth Cove Inn and the Floating Bridge Inn for food.Both of which take dogs.

The property was surface clean but could have done a deep clean in the shower cubicle, under the coffee table (old lip balm noted) & bed (old tissue noted) The key safe requires replacing as one of the buttons is broken. Other than yhat the property is delightful and we enjoyed our stay.

Great location. Parking not an issue as public car park just a few minutes walk away and permit is provided. 2 flights of steep stairs to the bedrooms so anyone with mobility issues would struggle. Bed is slightly too large for the room as you need to duck to avoid the eaves, but once there very comfy. Great shower. Sitting room very spacious and light. Only real gripe is the state of the courtyard, it really needs some time spent on improving.

Excellent accomodation and good, efficient service from Dart Cottages

We were nervous about staying in a dog friendly cottage, having experienced some not so nice accommodation in other holiday destinations. However, Captains Cottage is great; clean, modern and inviting and in a great location. Dart Cottages were really good, always contactable, helpful and providing excellent instruations ahead of our stay even providing incredible directions on what was a tricky place to find. The only thing I experienced was that I had spoken to Dart Cottages to check the access was ok due to being on crutches at the time. The Cottage did indeed have level access as advertised but I had phoned ahead of booking to check how accessible it was inside. i twas told it was only 4 steps up to the first floor and then a normal staircase which sounded do-able, However, when we arrived there was a steep staircase to the first floor, with an additional 4 steps as explained but in addition there were attic steps to the bedrooms which were definitely extremely challenging. However, I had arrived and made the best of it and as I say, this accommodation is a find, especially due to the fantastic location. I think Dart Cottages just did not know the layout and perhaps would have been better explaining that - but I forgive them as the service was great!

Quirky, cosy cottage in a great location

Lovely, quirky cottage in a great location - everything is on your doorstep. We managed 4 of us and a dog which was cosy, but doable. Seagulls a bit noisy, but not a lot anyone can do about that except bring earplugs. Lovely decor, well appointed, and car park pass a godsend. Great value for money, and a thumbs up from us..

Fantastic accommodation in the heart of Dartmouth. We had everything we needed for our weeks holiday. Clean and easily accessible for local amenities, car pass very much appreciated! Great restaurants nearby to recommend- Platform 1 (if you fancy an expensive treat), Spice Merchant (curry) Vino (Pizza), Kendricks and Rockfish - pre holiday bookings advisable as walk ins very difficult. Other than the noisy seagulls, would definitely recommend a stay at Captains Cottage.

Great retreat in the centre of Dartmouth.

Had a brilliant week at this town centre house, this was the second time that we have stayed here and it doesn’t disappoint from the moment you arrive to when you leave. Parking permit a bonus just park the car and forget about it, as there is so much to do either on foot or by boat. In fact it is so relaxing just like home from home that we rebooked for later in the year, also everyone at Dart Valley Cottages is a joy to deal with, nothing is to much trouble.

Well located in beautiful Dartmouth

Overall we enjoyed staying at Captain’s cottage but as a newcomer to holiday cottages, I would definitely look for somewhere with some outside space next time. The cottage was newly converted but in my opinion lacking in some very important touches. We were delighted to find a washing machine at the property but disappointed that it wasn’t also a drier. We found it difficult to dry our clothes because it was summer and we didn’t want the heating on. Also, we had soggy towels all week because the bathroom towel rail was only connected to the heating system. It would have been so much better if it had an independent switch as well. Whilst at the property we had a problem with a leak due to the toilet not being fitted properly. As a result, the floor tiles around the toilet were all cracked. The agent sent a plumber out very quickly to sort the problem. One other point I would like to make is that the cottage would benefit from having light weight duvets for use during summer stays. We were far too hot using the heaving duvet supplied.

Half term treat

We arrived on Friday afternoon, directions were good and Captains cottage was easy to find and parking very close by. The Cottage was spotless and had everything we needed, the shower is amazing and loved the kitchen. The beds were very comfortable and although your in the centre of town we couldn’t hear anything from the street at night. Dartmouth is a stunning, quirky little fishing town, my children absolutely loved crabbing, the cottage is a stones throw from the little harbour (boat float). Very easy to get the ferry across to Kingswear, then the steam train to Paignton. We will definitely return to Captain’s cottage in the near future!

Well presented, great location

Cottage was exactly how the photos looked - well equipped, clean and plenty of space. Very well located for town centre, ferries and car park. Would have been nice to have a small seating area in the courtyard but this was our only complaint. Would definitely recommend for a couple or small family getaway
