Chez Vous à Uzès, Heated Pool, Garden, Steps to Place aux Herbes,
Don't miss this spacious apartment of a 16th century house with Pool in the centre of Uzès. It has been completely and beautifully renovated in the past year. It is located a minute's stroll from the famous Place aux Herbes. On a protected street of the historic center of this charming town, on the second floor (European), of a 4 century old building. While the lower two floors are occupied by the owners of the building, who were once owners of a well-known Château Hotel, this apartment is an completely independent home. You will be Chez Vous.
The restoration has strived to maintain the character and proportions of the original historic home, while providing all modern conveniences, and a lot of charm. It is pleasing to the eye and soothing to the senses. The remarkable free-standing circular stone stair case remains a tribute to the engineering skills of the builders of centuries ago. The wooden ceiling beams and old stone floors have been maintained throughout and lend a special historical ambiance to the rooms. The spacious and gracious living room looks out over the fig and bamboo trees, and the new swimming pool of the small garden of the property and the rooftops of the town, while comfortable seating, elegant furnishings and the light and airy atmosphere make for a relaxing experience. A small corner desk is looking out over the garden is perfect for writing or working with a laptop via the WIFI. There is air-conditioning in the living room for the summer and heating for the winter, as well as the possibility of a warming wood-burning fireplace.
Up a ladder staircase is the second bedroom, a loft niche at mezzanine level, containing two beds, and likely to be greatly enjoyed by youngsters. Please note, that it is not a closed-in bedroom, and would not be suitable for adults. The kitchen is entirely new, has plenty of cupboard and drawer space, and contains an oven, stovetop, microwave, refrigerator, various small appliances and a table for dining. A bathroom with shower, and a separate toilet are within the apartment, while a washing machine is available in the attic one level up.
The bedroom has a queen-sized bed and antique furnishings, with double-glazed windows and exterior shutters to keep the room cool during the afternoon sun.
Uzès is a small town with a large reputation. Its wonderful buildings and architecture, along with its thriving cultural activities, and renowned weekly markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays) have contributed to its fame. The Guardian newspaper in England designated it as the second best place to visit in 2014 (the first was Cape Town), a remarkable endorsement for such a small town. The town has attracted many artists and artisans, as well as up and coming chefs, as the numerous excellent restaurants attests. Numerous attractive villages are in the surroundings of Uzès, and walks or bike rides or drives through the many vineyards to these ancient villages are very appealing. The long history of the area is perhaps best exemplified by the nearby Pont du Gard, arguably the best-preserved Roman Aqueduct anywhere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Further afield lie all of the glorious attractions of Provence and the Languedoc. The historic city of Nîmes, with its remarkable Roman Arena and the Maison Carrée Roman temple, and lovely fountain gardens, only 25 minutes away. Avignon the City of the Popes on the River Rhone is 40 minutes away. Within an hour's drive lie ancient Arles, lovely St. Remy, dramatic Les Baux, the lovely, Camargue, thriving Montpellier, while a bit further offers Aix, Cassis, Marseille, and the Luberon. However, apart from the sites to visit, there is the incontestable leisure to be derived from wandering through Provence and its backwaters, enjoying the scenery, the history, the food and the wines - an unmatched experience.
