We had an unfortunate experience with this guest. They stayed for one week in August 2022. All communication prior to arrival was correct and I went to pick them up to take them to the house on check-in day. Everything seemed to be in order and I left them to settle in. I always make a point of checking in with my guests on the first morning after arrival to make sure that they are comfortable and have everything they need. That morning Jörn informed me that since the outdoor pool shower had rosemary plants growing around the base, this rendered the shower ¨not possible to use¨, despite the shower head being perfectly orientable and so able to be easily adjusted. I was a little surprised and perplexed but nonetheless immediately went to prune the plants so that they could shower without having to touch the plants. I also would like to mention that we discovered just before their arrival that there was one door that was not closing properly. We left it closed so it was not possible to enter from outside and told Jörn that we would call the technicians first thing Monday morning. On Monday the door company told us that due to the holiday season they had no technicians available until the following week, so we went to the house straight away and fixed it ourselves, leaving it in perfect working order. During the remainder of their stay I received very little communication from them. Replies to my messages were always short and correct. I would always expect that guests feel free to let me know if I can help them in any way and I make this clear from the beginning. I therefore assumed that everything was in order. The night before their departure we spoke on the phone in order to arrange the check-out and was told by Jörn that he considered that there were “maybe 7 or so things” that he was not happy with in the house. When I asked him to please elaborate he mentioned that there was a small patch of wooden floor in one bedroom that is scratched. When I asked him to what else he was unhappy with he avoided answering further, saying instead “I think you probably already know”. As he was unwilling to elaborate further I wished him a safe journey home. I found this lack of communication extremely frustrating as I have always had an easy and pleasant relationships with guests. It is very important to us that they fully enjoy their holidays in our home. I suspect that the vintage style of our house and furnishings was not to their taste and am actually surprised they chose this house as it is quite clear from the photographs exactly how everything is. Most guests tell us they love how the house interacts with the surrounding countryside but it seemed to bother them. The following day when the cleaning team went to prepare the house for the next guests on opening the front door they were absolutely horrified at the stench emanating from within. They discovered that the kitchen rubbish bin had not been emptied in so long that the bin was full of live maggots and rotting food. The smell was unbearable and it took hours to dissipate. They also found the dishwasher in a lamentable state. It was completely blocked up with food scraps as evidently they did not rinse the plates before stacking the dishwasher. In addition the garden was littered with many pieces of paper, food wrappers and rubbish. Lastly they left without paying the compulsory Balearic Government Tourist Tax despite being requested to do so twice. I have waited to write this review as I expected that they may contact me after their departure in order to remedy this but almost 2 weeks have passed now so I can only assume that they deliberately refuse to pay this compulsory Tax. So for these reasons I can unfortunately not recommend Jörn to any other homeowner. This is the first time I have written a negative review about a guest in all ten years that we have been renting our house and hope never to have to repeat the experience but think it is important to reflect the reality of the situation.
