Town: Bere Alston is a small Devon village in a beautiful location between the rivers Tavy and Tamar, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village was once a thriving port shipping tin from Dartmoor. Just upstream from Bere Alston on the river Tamar is Morwellam Quay, a tiny harbour where half the world’s copper travelled through in the 1860s, and which is now a popular visitor attraction telling the story of copper mining through history. Trains run between Bere Alston and Plymouth, on the picturesque Tamar Valley line, following the river for much of the route. Bere Alston has a village shop and pub and there are plenty of stunning countryside walks. Two National Trust properties in the area are Cotehele, a Tudor manor house and glorious gardens stretching down to the river Tamar and Buckland Abbey, an estate on the river Tavy with craft workshops and family attractions.
