We have been coming to St. Croix since we were on our honeymoon in 1992 and fell in love with the generous, kind people who live here and their island. This is a working island without large, commercial, all-consuming hotels and manufactured waterways. The fact that the weather is almost a constant temperature (about 10 degrees different between winter and summer) and always light and sunny spoke to us as well. We love the laid-back feel, the music, the art, the stunning beauty of the landscape with it's vibrant, constantly changing colors, water that is everywhere, and the feeling that we were coming home whenever we would visit. This is a place where you can just breathe. There's a lot of varied and different flora and fauna on St. Croix and it's so much fun to get to know all the species. When the Great Southern White butterflies hatch every year and fill the island with their presence so that you can walk through a cloud of them and they delicately land on your arms, or brush by your face, it's like a blessing being bestowed on you.
And so we looked for quite a while to find a home on the water where we could be surrounded by the sea, have a beach where we could relax and play, and glide easily into the water. We were enchanted with this home and it's unique features like the rock walls, the painted murals, the mahogany woodwork, the lovely arched windows that open to the water/beach/pool/garden view to let in the breezes and keep the house cool. We loved the open, light, easy feel to the rooms, and that the house isn't overwhelming or pretentious, it's just comfortable and easy-going.
Helping us to make the decision to buy here was the fact that as a US territory, all the laws are the same, the money and postal system is the same, English is the main language, insurances and taxes are the same.
Spending time here is pure joy. Realistically, sometimes life get in the way but St. Croix is a bountiful feast for all your senses and total magic!!
