Denis' property was absolutely fantastic. It's exactly what I needed over the Christmas break, to get away from all the hustle and bustle of Denver. Nestled next to a reservoir and towering mountains about 20 minutes north of Silverthorne and about 40 minutes from Breckenridge, this cabin in Heeney was in a beautiful location. The alpenglow view out the window in the evenings as the sun was setting was magnificent.
And despite its remote location, the cabin is warm and well-furnished. The kitchen had a ton of supplies to cook with, and I'm not just talking about the pots and pans. There were plenty of spices, dishes, even a mini waffle maker and coffee grinder (that I made good use of on the 0-degree mornings during my stay).
The fireplace was stocked with an ample amount of firewood, which combined with the Christmas music playing on the satellite TV made it feel like I was living in a Hallmark movie! If you're reading this, don't worry, the cabin has thermostats for every room and they all kept it cozy regardless of the fireplace. And the owner even decorated with plenty of interior and exterior Christmas lights and figurine houses before the stay, which was an excellent touch.
I had a hard time finding any negatives about my stay, but I would say that the driveway is steep, and if it snowed more than it had (around 3 inches or so the first night), it might have been tough getting up the hill if you had a 2-wheel-drive vehicle. The other minor problem was with some of the neighborhood dogs that were wandering around that took me by surprise, especially because one of them was a large mastiff-type breed. They didn't stick around long, fortunately. Lastly, I would recommend wearing shoes on the stairs; the berber carpet was a little slick coming down if you had socks on. I am really nitpicking here though; it was an excellent cabin to stay in and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Denis was the perfect host: he was communicative early when I had questions, gave me a great .PDF booklet of the cabin with all the rules and directions for the house ahead of time (there's a hardcopy in the living room too), and then he left me alone for the duration of the stay. He even provided a little surprise gift (don't worry, I'm not going to ruin the surprise, Denis; they'll have to stay to find out). I think of all the rentals I've stayed in, Denis was my favorite host.
I can't wait to plan my next trip! Thank you Denis!
