We were to arrive very late (around midnight) so 10 days before arrival I messaged the host to ask if that was ok. No response. 3 days before arrival I messaged again to ask if they had received my message. No response. 2 days before I messaged again. No response. The day before check in I messaged again. No response. The morning of check in, as we are heading to the airport, I call the host and left a voicemail. No answer. So I send a text. No response. Now we are extremely worried. Did something happen to the host? Maybe they’re in the hospital from a horrible accident? Did we book and pay for a scam? We have a long day of travel ahead, and are about to board a plane and don’t know if we have a place to go. It’s not like I can use my phone on the plane to continue to try to contact this host. So I call VRBO customer service. They try to call this host 4 separate times. No answer. So they transfer me to rebooking and start the process of getting us a new place due to noncompliance. Minutes after we have paid for new place this host messages me with check in instructions. No explanation for why they’ve been ignoring me and VRBO customer support. This is also 5 minutes AFTER the normal arrival time. There has been 0 communication before this. So now we have paid for 2 properties. We then had to contact the other host of the new house and cancel. Which caused us to lose the VRBO fees and taxes, a total of $153.00. We received no apology from this host. They only said because we were arriving late they decided to send check in instructions late. They could’ve told me that from the start. A simple 3 letter response to my first message. I still don’t understand why they ignored my messages and VRBO’s calls. So we arrive at midnight and the downstairs floors are sticky and dirty (We had to wash our slippers when we left). The washing machine has gunk and rust in every crack and crevice, so gross. The bed linens are very worn and some were ripped. The pillows were completely flat and overused. After only 2 hours of sleep the first night I went and bought sheets and pillows to use for the rest of my stay (since I was stuck with this property). The handles on the pans in the kitchen are about to fall off at any moment. This host offers their house at the bare minimum. Neighborhood was nice & quiet. The complete lack of communication, made this VRBO our worst. I have friends who host with VRBO, they couldn’t believe this host’s behavior.
